Amphipoda: The Shrimp-Like Crustaceans

Amphipoda, also known as scuds, side swimmers, or beachhoppers, are an order of malacostracan crustaceans. They are closely related to isopods, but differ in having three pairs of pleopods (abdominal appendages used for swimming) and three pairs of uropods (tail appendages) instead of two. Amphipods are also distinguished by their laterally compressed bodies and their lack of a carapace (hard outer shell).

Amphipods are one of the most diverse groups of crustaceans, with over 10,000 species described to date. They are found in almost all aquatic environments, from the deep sea to freshwater lakes and streams. Some amphipods have even adapted to life on land, where they are found in moist habitats such as beaches and forests.

Amphipods play an important role in the marine ecosystem as scavengers and detritivores. They feed on a variety of organic matter, including dead animals, algae, and bacteria. Amphipods are also a food source for many other animals, including fish, birds, and mammals.
