Top tip for reducing chronic inflammation and balancing cortisol for those with early CKD:

Whether you're lucky enough to be on holiday right now or (kind of) enjoying our rather reluctant British summer at home, I urge you to make a daily habit of reconnecting to Mother Earth.

I keep banging on about how tremenduously helpful to our health the practice of grounding can be... most people have never heard of it and yet it's so simple! Barefoot contact with the Earth is my top recommendation and it's Free!

Apart from drinking clean, structured water and eating fresh, organic food, I don't know of a more basic yet impactful way to support your health at all levels!

A new day, a new week...

Many things going on on the inside and around me.
Things that threaten to upset my inner balance and that I can't really control. But I CAN control how I respond to them.

Every day, we have a choice. In fact, we make dozens and dozens of choices...

We can choose to judge or to observe...
We can choose to hold on to heavy emotions that drain our battery or to shift our focus onto feelings that replenish our energy, such as joy, gratitude, care, appreciation.

We can choose to take a step back and remember the things, people and gifts we are grateful for. It takes just a minute. What are you grateful for?
What makes you feel good? How does this feel?

Another thing I know I can always do is to focus on the breath. Put my hand on my heart and imagine my breath flowing in and out of my heart space, breathing evenly in and out. This shifts my attention away from the stressful thing. Instead, with each breath, I focus on the feeling of gratitude, or one of care or love. There is always something, someone, a dear pet, place or situation we can lovingly think of.

Then I set my intention for this day. 'I intend for the day ahead to be blessed with love, joy, peace and growth for myself and others. All my relationships are harmonious. My body gets stronger every day and I lovingly take care of it and my health.I am willing to embrace change.' (Or whatever is pertinent for your situation).

I end with 'and so it is' and know that the universe is ALWAYS listening.

Doctors know that heart and kidney health are closely linked.

One such link could be via our heart rhythm pattern, or Heart Rate Variability (HRV).

Research suggests that poor Heart Rate Variability (HRV) is linked to a higher risk of progressive loss of kidney function.

HRV measures naturally occurring beat-to-beat changes in our heart rhythm pattern.

The more COHERENT we are, the BETTER our HRV.

Coherence not only improves HRV but also correlates with improved energy levels, stress resilience and brain function (memory, concentration, etc).

So if you are a patient with a CKD diagnosis, here is something you can do at home every day that will positively influence your kidney health and that off the entire body.

"Your bloods look fine' may be a comment you have had before, when you knew for a fact you were NOT FINE? How can this be?

It's because whenever there is an assault on your health, the body will initially do all it can to balance, compensate and repair, so your blood results may look as if things are fine when in reality, something is brewing.

That's why I love Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis (HTMA) testing, where we can see what has been going on in the body at cellular level for the past 3 or 4 months, and discover root causes for the symptoms you are experiencing.

Relying on supplements alone is pointless if you have CKD and plummeting energy levels.

Whatever your symptoms, reducing toxin intake through eating a cleaner diet and living a cleaner lifestyle needs to come first.

Once this foundation is in place, it makes sense to support the body in rebuilding and rebalancing itself, which will ultimately lead to you feeling much more like yourself again.

Off to do a weekend dialysis shift starting at 6am on this gorgeous morning.

Once people are on dialysis, this significantly impacts on all aspects of life, including family, relationships, work etc. as treatment is ongoing, usually for 4 hours, 3 times per week.

The good news is, if you are in the early stages of kidney disease, making dietary and lifestyle changes will go a long way towards avoiding or delaying the need for dialysis (or having transplant surgery).

This is why I am crafting my innovative course/coaching programme for ladies with early stage CKD that will enable them to boost their kidney strength and retain their flexibility and freedom, without interfering with conventional treatment.

I am not saying it is a quick-fix (although sometimes effects can be felt quickly), but grounding as a daily practice will increase your wellbeing from head to toe... and your sleep and energy levels, too.

A large, long-term study has found a significant link between TMAO levels and Chronic Kidney Disease developing or getting worse over time. The seemingly obvious answer is new drugs.

TMAO is a compound that was found to increase when we eat more eggs, red meat, shellfish and fish, whereas a vegetarian or vegan diet appears to lower it. So here is another element that highlights the important connection between gut health and kidney health.

Rather than look at developing a new drug to lower these levels, would it make sense to
- make dietary changes, to avoid excessive consumption of certain types of meat for example?
- explore what is it in the meat that causes TMAO levels to rise.... Is it just the protein content, the type of protein or is it residues of toxins, antibiotics and hormones that might be contained in the meat?

When you get an overwhelming sense of sadness, feeling like you're running on fumes even though the sun is shining, nature is looking gorgeous and you have people around you... the pressure, negativity and stress of daily living just seems to be getting too much and the composure you've been working so hard to maintain for those around you just seems to be collapsing like a house of cards..

Acknowledge this, allow it to happen. This is human and not something to fight.... allow it to be, experience it.... and then make the decision to give that feeling back to the universe, with love and gratitude.

Now shift your focus on to the area of your heart.

Take some deep, even breaths in and out pretending you are brrathing in and out through your heart.

Think of a person, a place, a beloved pet or situation that makes you feel good, calm or appreciative. Stay in this place and feel how good it does you. Allow this feeling to 'refill your cup'.

A systematic review published in Frontiers of Nutrition journal earlier this year, looked at the impact of high consumption of ultra-processed foods on the development of Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD).

They found that eating ultra-processed foods significantly increases the risk of CKD. In individuals already diagnosed with the condition, it is highly likely that ultra-processed foods will mean it progresses more quickly.

Did you know that 'supermarket bread' is classed as such a food?

Since I have a background in renal nursing, I am passionate about raising awareness around CKD, how to avoid it and how to slow it down if you have been diagnosed.
