And so it's goodbye from us.
The Skye Magazine Facebook and Twitter accounts will shortly be closing.
This ends an adventure that started in 2004 with the initial expansion of HEB Magazine to cover Skye and Ullapool, with hopes of Tiree as well!
Editor Fred Silver looks back with amazement at the early days…searching the byways of Skye for the occasional place with mobile reception; and utterly dependent on the library in its old centre in Portree for reliable internet. We have made many, many friends - and, inevitably, upset a few people, too, over the years.
Apart from the impact of Covid-19 and the change in readers' habits in the age of mobile devices, we are stymied now by the lack of reliability of transport to and from Skye and costs of accommodation for visiting staff in comparison to the earlier years.
But the main challenges were laid down by the lockdowns and subsequent uncertainty. We simply could not produce the product we wanted to.
And finally, great thanks to our many loyal customers and readers over almost 2 decades…and an especially big thank you to the indefatigable Roz Macaskill, now of Isle of Skye Copywriting, without whom The Skye Magazine would never have survived so long.

MV Loch Frisa officially began carrying passengers on the Oban-Craignure route yesterday (Monday June 13) allowing CalMac Ferries to take a baby-step towards greater resilience.

MV Loch Frisa will operate as a dedicated, year-round vessel on the main Mull route.

She is being progressively phased into the Oban-Craignure timetable, in tandem with MV Coruisk, while MV Isle of Mull will continue to operate its normal timetable.

Once MV Loch Frisa takes over the full MV Coruisk timetable, MV Coruisk will reposition to Mallaig where she will deliver services on the Mallaig-Armadale route, which has been plagued by delays and services cancellations for several years since the much-loved MV Coruisk was transferred away.

Robbie Drummond, Managing Director of CalMac, said: “I very much welcome the addition of MV Loch Frisa and her crew to CalMac and am looking forward to seeing her in operation. The fact that she is island-centric is something that the Mull community has been asking for, and I am pleased that we will be fulfilling this aspiration."

Minister for Transport Jenny Gilruth added: “I’m absolutely delighted to see the MV Loch Frisa join the CalMac ferry fleet and I look forward to making the journey to Mull in her capable hands in the near future.

“The purchase and deployment of the Loch Frisa is an example of the Government working to support second-hand tonnage for island communities."

Local school children in Portree are helping spread the word about the town’s new Scottish Water Top up Tap – aimed at helping residents and visitors stay hydrated on the go.
The free water refill point has been installed in Somerled Square and P6 pupils at Portree Primary School took part in a poster competition as part of its official launch to help promote the new facility.
Jonathan Langlands’ poster was the judges’s first choice, with classmates Finlay Constant second and Adaidh MacIsaac in third place. The poster designs encourage people to top up for free using refillable bottles and reduce single-use plastic waste.
The pupils joined Margaret Ferguson of Skye Climate Action, Annmarie Campbell from Portree and Braes Community Trust and local Community Council Acting Secretary Roger Liley, as well as some of Scottish Water’s local team, to launch the tap.
The Community Trust first approached Scottish Water on behalf of Skye Climate Action about getting a tap for the Skye capital. Highland Council gave approval for the Tap’s connection to its existing water supply in the square, helping to avoid the need for an additional road crossing to access the nearest public water main.
Local Scottish Water field response team leader James MacInnes said: “We are delighted to have launched one of our sought-after Top up Taps in the busy centre of Portree - to help residents and visitors stay hydrated while on the go. We want to help make it easier for people to cut down on single-use plastics so everyone can help keep our beautiful island litter free. Using a refillable water bottle to top up from the tap is good for the environment, good for your health and good for your pocket.
“It is one way that visitors and locals alike can help reduce our impact on the environment we all want to protect and enjoy. We want people to take advantage of our clear, fresh, great-tasting drinking water to stay hydrated, but we are also encouraging everyone to be mindful about the way we all use this incredibly important and precious resource.
“Despite the rainfall we get, there are many areas of Skye where water resources are under real pressure in the summer - when we get periods of warm, dry weather and a significant increase in the island’s population. Small changes like using a water butt and a watering can instead of a hose in the garden; using a basin to wash dishes; or having a shorter shower can add up to a big difference – easing the pressure on our environment and saving drinking water for its most important purpose.”
Margaret Ferguson said: “From very early on, one of Skye Climate Action’s aims was to get people to cut down on single use plastics so we are delighted to see the Top Up Tap in Somerled Square which helps people to do just that.
“It has been great to see the enthusiasm of the young people in the town for the tap today and I am sure it will be a well-used facility - making it easier and more convenient for people to stay hydrated and helping encourage them to get into the habit of carrying a reusable bottle when they leave the house.”
Annmarie Campbell of Portree and Braes Community Trust added: “We are delighted that Portree has been selected as the most recent location for installation of a Scottish Water Top Up Tap. This will undoubtedly help locals and visitors reduce their usage of single use plastic and help to keep Portree and the wider island clean and tidy.
“Well done to Skye Climate Action for initiating discussions about a potential tap for Portree back in 2020 and thank you to the Scottish Water team for making it happen."
The free water refill points are part of the publicly-owned water company’s Your Water, Your Life campaign which aims to get people using Scotland’s world class tap water, while also reducing single-use plastic waste by encouraging the use of refillable bottles.
Over 70 taps have now been installed at sites across Scotland including harbours, beaches, national parks, botanical gardens and other top tourist attractions. The Portree tap is the seventh so far in the Highland Council area, with more on the way.

SkyeConnect has reluctantly taken the decision to cancel Friday’s Tourism Summit – “Sharing stories – seeking solutions.” The event was due to be held at the Sligachan Hotel on Friday at 1000am with Kate Forbes MSP and Ian Blackford MP in attendance to hear the challenges facing the tourism sector.

The biggest issue affecting many businesses on Skye is the shortage of staff. We have been contacted by members who would like to attend the event but cannot spare the time due to a shortage of staff. There is also a spike in Covid cases on Skye at the moment which may also be impacting on numbers.

A spokesman for SkyeConnect said it was a hard decision to make.

“The irony is that the very issue dominating the minds of tourism businesses owners – staff shortages – is the reason so many people are unable to attend the event to discuss potential solutions. It would be unfair to ask our elected members and other public officials to make time in their busy schedules for an event with a small audience. We will look to reschedule the summit for later in the year when more people will be able to attend.”

The SkyeConnect AGM will still go ahead as planned at 0930 on Friday at the Sligachan Hotel.

Apologies for the long gap since the last post - this has been caused by staff sickness, shorrtage of staff, and soaring demand for services..the last 3 months have been by far the most difficult of the last 3 years - as everyone is finding, I think . It's all very well for Government to be telling everyone they should have been prepared. How could we prepare? With a bit of luck, we might get some of our missing services back in action soon - although on Monday this week there was no one at all in the office because of the impact of infections, days-off, working from home etc.

This post was some months ago - but the story is timeless

Here are some lovely words from a recent couple who visited the shop.

My fiancée’s proposal matched the lovingly chosen engagement ring itself. It was a moment of the wildest beauty overlooking a dramatic sky cut through with shafts of silver light.
Thank you so much for the most special experience today visiting the incredible Duncan House. I could not be more thrilled about the stunning ring and seeing where it has come from and the passion and skill behind it was incredibly moving for me. I will never forget the story behind my engagement ring and will treasure it for the rest of my life.

We’re excited to be taking part in the second RHS Partner Garden of The Year competition!

As we all emerge from the restrictions of the last two years, it’s never been more important to get out into nature, and enjoy the sounds, scents, and sights of the nation’s gardens and the RHS is once again asking visitors to vote for their favourite among its 207 Partner gardens.

The theme of the competition is ‘Feel Good’, reflecting how beneficial exercise and a connection to nature are for good mental health and wellbeing. If your visits to our garden (or just seeing the pictures and videos that we’ve been sharing) have made you feel good, we want to know!

We’ve been so grateful for your support over this difficult time, and we’d love it if you would vote for us when voting opens today!

The theatre group Company of Wolves presents Julius Caesar by William Shakespeare, directed by Ewan Downie, and performed by Esme Bayley, Lawrence Boothman, Oat Jenner, Belle Jones and Megan Lovat in Sleat and in Dunvegan in the last week of April.
This comes after two performances in North Uist on Friday 22 and Saturday 23 April.
The performance asks the question: "What happens when we confuse conspiracy and reality?" which is something with a very modern resonance.
The laboratory theatre-makers say they are returning to the stage with Shakespeare’s masterpiece, breathing new life into the tale of trust and deceit, conspiracy and reality, civilisation and mob rule.
"Five actors perform Shakespeare’s play, creating a world on the brink of crisis, teeming with crowds and politics: a wild ride from the streets of Rome to the steps of the Capitol, from whispers in the night to outright war.
The classic tale follows Brutus and Cassius who fear Caesar will crown himself king. But when they kill Caesar to prevent him taking the throne, they unleash forces that threaten to tear their world apart. What happens when we trust the wrong people? When we confuse conspiracy and reality? What happens when we cannot see ourselves?
Director Ewan Downie said: “Julius Caesar is a play about civilisation in crisis, about power and about the human cost of false beliefs, themes that will resonate strongly with contemporary audiences.
“I wanted to explore the far reaches of storytelling, so the entire world of the play will be created by an extraordinary cast of five: three women, two men.
“Staging a classic play like this is a exciting departure for Company of Wolves, marrying our signature physicality with vivid and dynamic text. We’re looking forward to sharing the show with audiences across Scotland this coming Spring.”
Company of Wolves is a laboratory theatre company based in Glasgow. They make performance by experiment, crafting unique and compelling theatre that speaks directly to the times in which we live.
The company was formed by Ewan Downie and Anna Porubcansky after an eight year immersion in the Polish laboratory theatre tradition of Song of the Goat Theatre, Jerzy Grotowski and Gardzienice.

From Raasay to Dubai…BBC Alba looks at rain…in the latest in a number of collaborations between BBC ALBA and TG4 dealing with international stories.
Presented by Anne McAlpine (Anne Lundon) (Landward, BBC News) for BBC ALBA, An t-Uisge / Rain Stories explores how rain has influenced our cultures and traditions since time began.
An t-Uisge / Rain Stories asks what rain actually is, and why it’s more important now than ever as the world deals with the climate crisis and looks for solutions.
In Raasay, Anne visits the distillery to see if, as the saying goes, today’s rain really is tomorrow’s whisky.
But Anne discovers that the rain doesn’t always bring good tidings when she visits the National Trust for Scotland’s Hill House in Helensburgh. Right on the edge of Argyll’s coastal temperate rainforest, the Hill House is now undergoing a costly recovery after decades of rain damage.
In the series, viewers will learn that the survival of this iconic Charles Rennie Mackintosh masterpiece relies on the protection of a huge breathable suit of armour which encases the historic and beautiful building.
We also see traditions often used to keep the rain at bay. In Ireland, a statue of the Child Jesus, known as the Child of Prague, is placed in the garden on the eve of a wedding in the hope of clear skies for the following day.
Other Scottish stories in the series include: Prof. Mark Sutton and Netty Van Dijk of the UK Centre for Ecology & Hydrology, who show Anne their unique experiment to monitor pollution from farming and car emissions. Dr. Edward 'Weather" Graham, of University of the Highlands and Islands in Stornoway, discusses acid rain and Gordon Cameron, of Applecross, shows Anne how the community has used its abundant resource – rain – to create a community hydro scheme.
Other highlights of the series, which was also funded by Screen Scotland, as well as NI Screen’s Irish Language Broadcast Fund, TG4, LIC in China, Creative Wales and distributed by TVF International, include eye-catching rituals from around the world - to call rain and to ward it off – two of them involving weddings!
Anne said: “We have an abundance of rain in Scotland and growing up in the west I'm well used to being out in all seasons, for work and pleasure. Working on this series was so interesting; digging deeper into the science and the stories - of which there are many!- behind rain was a topic I'm very interested in - as most Scots are!”
At the National Center of Meteorology in Abu Dhabi, Anne met some of the scientists involved in seeding the clouds - a type of weather modification that aims to increase the rain in this desert country.
The MacTV /Cwmni Da / Below the Radar / LIC co-production series features stories from Scotland, Ireland, India, USA, Kenya, China and the United Arab Emirates.
AN T-UISGE / RAIN STORIES begins on BBC ALBA on Wednesday, April 6 at 9pm. Each programme will also be available to watch on the BBC iPlayer for 30 days afterward
