As a special tribute to Johnnie Walker we'll be playing a newly-restored, high quality, two-hour recording of Johnnie from 'the night that no man will ever forget' – 14 August, 1967 - in this weekend's Caroline Archive Hour. We are very saddened to hear that radio presenter Johnnie Walker has died at the age of 79, two months after calling time on his 58-year career because of ill health.

Walker began his radio career in 1966 on Swinging Radio England, an offshore pirate station, before moving to Radio Caroline. He joined BBC Radio 1 in 1969, and joined Radio 2 in 1997 where he remained until his retirement.

Johnnie did an interview with Ray Clark which aired on Radio Caroline after his final Radio 2 show finished.

Many offshore radio histories credit Radio Caroline with being the first British offshore station in 1964. However, few people realize there was actually another English-language station in the North Sea before that, for a few months in late 1960 and early 1961. The station operated from the Radio Veronica ship, and on Saturday night (23rd) in the Caroline Archive hour, we have a very rare restored recording of the station on that date, 23rd November, in 1960, with Canadian DJ Doug Stanley (pictured, centre, with the Swinging Blue Jeans).

Then, On Sunday night in part 2, we'll be joining Paul May for an hour on RNI on 24th November 1971, when the Mebo II was having a new anchor installed. So, be sure to tune in - 8pm UK time on Sat & Sun, repeated at 4 & 5pm on Tue.

From May to December 1976, Caroline broadcast on 192 metres during the daytime, and on both 192 and 259 metres overnight. This week on the Caroline Archive Hour, we're going back to the November during that period, and will be playing two hours of a restored Sunday afternoon recording with Mike Stevens on 192 metres. The first hour will be on Saturday 16th at 8, and then we'll continue with a second hour on Sunday night at the same time. So don't miss Mike Stevens, 48 years ago, on this week's Caroline Archive Hour, on Caroline Flashback.

Many listeners remember Dave Owen on Radio Atlantis presenting the zany breakfast shows called 'Snap, Crackle & Pop'. Well, after the Dutch anti-pirate radio law went into effect in August 1974, Dave joined Radio Caroline, and in response to listener requests, this weekend on the Caroline Archive Hour we'll be playing restored recordings of two hours of Dave on Caroline in November 1974. So that's tonight (Saturday 9th) at 8 on Flashback, and continued on Sunday night at 8 as well.

It was autographed and given to photographer David Lee by the band while he was at the gig taking photos. One of the photos David took appears in the recent Keith Emerson CD box set. The tambourine measures 6 ½” diameter and was a promotional item for the tour.

Status Quo's Francis Rossi, has officially become a patron of our charity MV Ross Revenge Home of Radio Caroline, which is driving vital fundraising efforts to get our historic former pirate radio ship in dry dock for urgent structural repairs.

"The Ross Revenge is more than just a ship, it is an important part of British musical history that deserves to be preserved,” said Francis Rossi. “Radio Caroline allowed many bands like ours to be heard - and I am glad now to repay the favour by lending my own voice in support of this project.”

Station manager Peter Moore said: “We are thrilled to welcome Francis Rossi as a patron for this important cause. His support, along with the public’s generosity, is essential to protect Ross Revenge and all it represents. We’re determined to secure a future for this legendary ship, and with Francis on board, we’re confident that our goal will resonate with even more people.”

For all its notoriety and the impact it had on British radio, the life of Laser 558 was fairly short - less than 18 months, from May 1984 until November 1985. When the end came, it was very abrupt with no prior warning, at lunchtime on Tuesday 5th November 1985. In the Archive Hour this week, we'll be telling some of the story as to exactly what happened, as well as playing a restored recording of the last two hours from Laser, which was presented by John Leeds. That will start on Saturday night (2nd) at 8pm, and then be continued in part 2 on Sunday night at the same time.

Fans of Roger 'Twiggy' Day will be pleased to hear that we have another restored recording of him on Sat. 26th in part 1 of the Caroline Archive Hour - a whole hour, in fact, from 22nd October 1966 on Swinging Radio England. Then on Sunday night in part 2, in response to a listener request, we have an hour of Caroline Martin (pictured) on the Ross Revenge from 25th October 1990, just 10 days before the end of Caroline's broadcasts from International Waters. That's all on Caroline Flashback at 8pm on both Saturday & Sunday evening, repeated from 4-6pm on Tuesday afternoon.

This weekend (19th/20th) on the Caroline Archive Hour will be a Swinging Radio England special. We have two restored recordings, both from October 1966. On Saturday night at 8 will be a very young sounding Roger 'Twiggy' Day with about 35 minutes of an evening show, followed by the start of Bruce Wayne (pictured) on a late night 'Midnight Early Show'. That will be continued for another whole hour on Sunday night at 8. So, tune in and see what the 'Boss Jocks' were playing on this very American sounding station 58 years ago.

We don't often get the opportunity on the Caroline Archive Hour to hear music from the autumn of 1968, but this Saturday evening (12th) we have a restored recording of Radio Luxembourg featuring Tony Windsor and Noel Edmonds presenting a Decca Show on 12th October that year - 56 years ago. The show is also briefly introduced by Roger Day, who was in Luxembourg at that time. And on Sunday night in part 2, we have the fourth and final hour of the Carl Mitchell show on RNI from the night the MV Mebo II was sailing across the North Sea towards the English coast.
