CONTINUING OUR DOCUMENTARY JOURNEY

Yesterday we filmed at Bristol University with the amazing professor, Florian Scheding whose knowledge and storytelling are just outstanding! He specialises in the topic of music and immigration and one of his research subjects is the Hungarian composer, Mátyás Seiber. It was absolutely fascinating to listen to him as he was presenting the life and work story of this slightly forgotten Hungarian musician. Also interesting to note how history repeats itself...anyway it's still a long way to go until it becomes an edited film but we are rolling!

ANNOUNCEMENT

Hey folks, long time no see...there is a reason for that but will detail it a bit further down.

Here is a sneak peek of the first filming project of the year last week which is a documentary for the Hungarian RTL Television on the composer Mátyás Seiber. If his name doesn't sound familiar, don't worry - that is why I've decided to take on this film.

Mátyás Seiber was a Jewish refugee from Hungary in the 1930s, before becoming a well-known composer and music teacher in the UK. He was a very versatile musician and his work ranged from jazz to pop music and film scores. He worked with the famous animator duo and together they produced the first full-length British animated film, Animal Farm in 1954! Mátyás was also a frequent contributor to BBC programmes and the London Pódium Cabaret which was a Hungarian show for emigre Hungarians in the 1940s.

So all pretty fascinating and very under-researched and this is what attracted me to this project. Last week I was filming with Julia Seiber Boyd, daughter of Mátyás in Cambridge - who is very passionate about keeping her father's legacy alive. So watch this space!

And now to the announcement bit - I started a part-time job from January with the main medical university in Hungary, and I became one of their international press officers. It's something totally different but something that I always wanted to try.

Fear not, I am still doing videography but it also needs to be part-time for the time being. It means you will see me and my projects less here - and although I will continue working with existing clients, I'll select carefully which new projects I can take on. Please bare with me as, although it's a very exciting time for me, it has also been pretty intense so far in the new year.

Thanks for reading so far and please get in touch if you have a new video project to discuss!

AUDIO IS JUST AS IMPORTANT AS THE PICTURE

For a good film it is not only the lights and the picture which count - you also need high-quality sound! Here I am trying to find the best place to clip the microphone on of ! This mic never wants to point in the direction I want it to point...😅

LONG TIME NO SEE...

I'm definitely getting lazier here on Instagram - I find it overwhelming and massively time consuming to create quality posts!

Also, I have been doing more research work rather than actual producing/filming since last week for an old-new project. You might remember that a few weeks ago I was filming about the Londoni Pódium Cabaret which got re-staged by the for the first time since 1945. I am now turning it into a longer broadcast documentary and.... I absolutely love this project!

History and personal stories always fascinate me - and reading about the Hungarian Jewish emigrees who tried to escape from the fascist regimes and settle down in the UK just pulls me in. Such an interesting subject - especially that not much has been written about these cabarets and their musical contribution to British culture.

For example, did you know that the author of the book "How to be an Alien?" is a Hungarian emigre, György Mikes (or as he is better known George Mikes)? He also had a massive role in staging Hungarian cabarets in London in the 1940s.

Or another example - Matyas Seiber, the Hungarian composer was not only writing the music of these cabarets but was also participating in the famous Halas&Batchelor Charley animations as a composer. (Btw Halas was also Hungarian!)

I am now organising the additional filming days and interviews and trying to research the story of the Londoni Pódium Cabaret in even more depth.

Here are some still shots from the footage of the re-staged show in October!

I'm so pleased that this class was launched a few days ago on . One of their top teachers, created something truly amazing again - this time she teaches how to create contrast in your illustration work using watercolor and .

Please check out the class if you are into illustration! The reviews speak for themselves:

"This class exceeded my expectations!"

"This is a great foundation class for beginners and advanced alike. It’s about working quickly and developing a foundation of observing contrast and getting it on paper without overthinking. The procreate lessons also added some new approaches to my process which I appreciate. I think this class is one to refer back to and practice regularly. "

"Ohn Mar is excellent at explaining the importance of contrast and showing her examples."

It's always pleasing to see that it was worth the hard work creating it! 🎬 Thanks Ohn Mar for working with me. 🙏

At the moment I'm pulling together the three angles to create the very first edit in order to finalise the content.

I ALWAYS LIKE A GOOD PAIR OF EARRINGS

I am a bit obsessed with earrings...it's not (yet) out of control but I have a few pairs and this is the only jewellery I usually wear. I always come home with a new piece from holiday, too...(or two! Or...anyway...)

Here I am wearing a pair of earrings - you can't see the other pair in my other ear which is smaller in size and silver! So it's two different sizes and colours but it's a pair - called EB Vario.

Juli is an incredibly talented Hungarian designer and she has a wide range of styles in her collection so make sure you check her work out.

If you want to see how the pair looks together - hop over to my stories. Just in pink...yes, I have more than one pair of these fab earrings! Update: I found a funky effect on stories so it will be a real colour cavalcade!

WORKING IN A TEAM

It is always beneficial to work with other people - especially if the equipment is nearly as big as you!! If it's a crew of 2-3 people you can share not only the physical work - but also save some head space to organise and arrange the production better and more smoothly.

My usual work partner in crime is but she was injured so her partner stepped in. But you can still spot Dia in the reflection of the tv as she could still capture some brilliant photos of the shooting day with a few weeks ago. 🙏

MY FACE AT THE MOMENT...
..they told me they appeared in the last series of Baptiste! 😂

A funny situation during the interview with .szabolcs when I asked him how he met - he said they were in a film together so I asked which one. As me and the mysterious Mr. Winnett are big fans of Baptiste, I was astonished as we just watched series 2 set in Budapest a couple of months ago.

These pictures are from the footage of last Wednesday's filming in Soho at for the . They re-staged the Hungarian show, London Pódium Cabaret from the 1940s and we are producing a short docu-type film for them. I appeared more in the role of a reporter/producer and my cameraman was .

CABARET

Last week I returned to my roots - I took on the role of the reporter/producer for a fabulous project and took along an excellent colleague, to help me with the filming rather than doing everything myself.

Videography was a path kind of forced on me after I moved to the UK for a lovely English man ten years ago - but beforehand I used to work as a television reporter in my home country, Hungary. I have to admit, I preferred this "old" job - sharing the camera work with someone else - as doing everything alone is hard work. Very hard work...

So last week I was mostly in front of and not behind the camera as we were producing a short docu-type film for the at in Soho, London. It will hopefully also be the base for a couple of other broadcasts.

It was all about the London Pódium Cabaret which is a show produced by Hungarian jewish immigrants back in the 1940s who managed to escape from the n**i regime. The cabaret was their rescue and place to get together and feel a bit closer to home while practicing self-irony and making jokes about their newly found British friends.

Even 80 years later we are wondering about the same things - why the houses are so cold, why the Brits are obsessed with beans on toast, etc...

This cabaret was last played in 1945 - and then this Wednesday! The original songs and texts survived only on handwritten notes in a few copies so in the past few months the fabulous director was digging out all the little details about the original show having to obtain special permission for using all the documents. It took several months to make it to the stage - and wow, they did a fantastic job!

The crew: , , .szabolcs, .aron and who is on the pictures being interviewed by me.

Ps.: Two of the actors featured in the last series of Baptiste which made me even more excited about the filming. Can you guess who?

MY REVIEW PROCESS

I'm about to finalise the edit of the Harvest Festival from a few weeks ago organised by the Hungarian Cultural Centre London / Londoni Magyar Kulturális Központ.

I thought it's a good opportunity to give another insight into my work process. After the filming I send a first edit to the client and then there is usually a review process where they can ask for minor changes and amendments. Then I finalise the edit taking in the requests. Then it goes through the post production process with colour grading, clearing up the audio and adding logos, etc.

It was such great fun to film this event! Can you spot the children amongst the musicians? They are only 5 and 7 and OMG, they play their instruments amazingly! Well done, Folktone Duo to nurture such talent! 👏

007 - PREMIERE

Cheers for that - we had a fun evening yesterday (with the mysterious Mr. Winnett who never wants to appear on social media) at the at the premiere of the new James Bond movie, . Although our wine came in a plastic water cup, it was still a very special occasion!

Check out my stories for more details - no red carpet though as there were too many people arriving too late - but still lots of exciting moments. Also, the popcorn by was actually to-die-for! (Sorry peeps, I haven't found your Instagram account in time to tag you in there!!) It was so good that we actually grabbed the left-overs - and took it home as a present for Benny, shhhh... Let's hope that the 🍸 won't be too much for him!

, did you like the movie? It was lovely spotting you in the crowd!

Cheers everyone!

SHOT LIST

It's always a good idea to have a shot list for creating a video teaching course - or indeed for any filming.

If you have a well-prepared script, then you can plan the cutaways for every single second of the course.

Here we are going through our shot list for 's new class which we filmed a couple of weeks ago. It's now in the edit. We prepared the script, the shot list and the production for months beforehand - and on the day we took it step-by-step or more like chapter-by-chapter by ticking off the ones we filmed and moving on to the next ones.

Good work takes time - and good films need lots of preparation.

Have a good Monday peeps!

FROM GREAT CHAOS TO TIDY FOOTAGE

Here you can see how a filming scene usually looks - in the first picture, cameras, frames, cables and people everywhere. Now swipe...
..and you find yourself in a (hopefully) nicely designed tidy set with no wires, lights and other stuff visible. Only and her books, tea cup and plant with a casually thrown blanket and cushions on a chair. And her illustrations to support Burma’s fight for democracy in the background.

On the first picture you can also spot all three cameras - one for wide shots, one for close ups and one for overhead shots. Then on picture 2 and 3 you can see the result! I think Ohn Mar looks really good on those! (No overhead as I haven't started editing those bits where we needed that camera, boo!)

Have a good weekend everyone.
