Some good news and some bad news this morning over at AI-HQ. Our AI-07 repress scheduled for release this week has suffered from a rather unfortunate mispress which means it will be delayed until later this year. To those of you who have already picked up a copy direct from us on Bandcamp, we’ve contacted you to resolve this matter. We’ve also been in touch with all shops who will be in touch with you if you’ve pre-ordered with them. Rest assured, we will get this cursed record out sometime in 2024!

In somewhat more positive news, we have received, without any issues(!), our copies of a repress of the much sought-after AI-09, Red Lantern at the Kallikatsou, which is due for release on February 23rd. Pre-orders should be available now at your local record store and up on our Bandcamp page. Happy to press this stunning release once more. Thanks everyone for your support ❤️

AI-36 comes from Ear to Ear - the debut collaboration between label regular Samuel van Dijk (Multicast Dynamics) and Ukrainian artist Yevgen Chebotarenko. Taken from a series of live recording sessions, the album explores in four parts a markedly darker realm of soundscape music. A cornucopia of abstract morphing scenes and heady synesthesia, the album brims with rich sonic detail and evocative gestures. Deftly blending organic sound textures with an experimental austerity, ‘Live Recordings’ displays potent and accomplished storytelling.

The album opens to a grey overcast vista, a natural landscape that slowly melts into a descending chasmic dysphoria. The mood transitions to a drone-based piece on the B-side, characterised by a more psychologically suspenseful framework and exotic blend of sound design. The atmosphere lightens, yet equally pensive as side C takes on a more elemental form, invoking water and its array of microbial and metabolic ecosystems. Brief cathartic moments in the final section pave the way for deeper wayfaring on the D-side. Stray signals and unknowable artefacts skitter across a vast subaqueous domain, a fathomless womb of potentialities that ebbs into eternity.

But Ghost Lights is more ethereal, more out-there, than either of those records. It has what you could call musical events, like the arrival or disappearance of certain sounds or chords. Just before we announce AI-34 (🥳) we want to announce some important news and the realisation of a project that has been a long time in the works.

We have a new distributor! In fact, we are starting a new distribution company, called Space Cadets. Amongst other benefits like fast turnaround times for manufacturing, Space Cadets is in a fairly unique position of being to fulfil records from both within the UK and the EU, meaning there will be no more customs fees for buyers in Europe - and that includes Bandcamp orders too.

"On this release, which comprises two alternative versions of a piece created as part of an audio-visual installation focused on environment, we get taken into the less beat driven dimensions of Sa Pa’s sound, where thoughtfully arranged textures, impulses and field recordings shift like tectonic plates with a steely veneer. Calling back to the snatched location captures of their debut LP on Forum, there are charmingly human moments of poppy radio and casual chatter threading in between ominous slabs of tone and drone, guiding your ear through imagined spaces but also, conversely, taking us out of the concept and into Sa Pa’s real world, recorder in hand, engaging in some kind of non-aggressive eavesdropping.

If the ‘Studio Mix’ has a light and airy feel at times, there’s a more brooding impetus coursing through the ‘Live Mix’ on the flip. The tendency tips towards rumbling low end with a chasmic depth to it, perhaps hinting at the power of a suitably hefty soundsystem through which to experience the sub frequencies. Even without the more obvious rhythmic pockmarks, there’s still a constant shifting at play in line with other Sa Pa material, where infinitesimal detail lies bedded into the overall cloying, cushioning sound. At once towering and imposing and yet also intimate and furtive, it’s as engrossing as we’ve come to expect from the shadowy figure on the fringes".

Berlin based sound artist Sa Pa delivers AI-33, titled ‘Atmospheric Fragments’. Originally intended as a soundtrack to accompany ten short experimental films as part of a physical exhibition in 2020 curated by Manon Bernard, Atmospheric Fragments was alternatively premiered online as a digital showroom - with its music performed and recorded both live and independently in 2021.

Atmospheric Fragments was conceived as a collaborative audio-visual project, positing the viewer inside a sonic boom of introspective parenthesis and offering a place for internal dialogues under the circumstances of a largely unknown and rapidly changing modern world.

Sa Pa’s work presents a fresh sonic reinterpretation of urban landscapes, skylines and modern environments, procuring from its source material a whole new kaleidoscopic world of its own. The record consists of two mixes - ‘Studio’ and ‘Live’ - which demonstrate a deep explorational study of our everyday surroundings, plunging the listener into a realm of heightened sense experience and microscopic detail. Where the ‘Studio’ mix embodies the precision and management of the studio workspace and is more ambient in nature, such intricacies are exchanged for a larger, livelier sound stage and alternative sonic material in the ‘Live’ mix.

A nebulous ocean of shifting spaces and effervescent textures, Sa Pa augments and modulates field recordings into a fluid and ever-evolving narrative. Seen through a viewfinder of deep and immersive observation, new transients, momentary artefacts and poetry in motion begin to reveal itself. In a world caught in momentary stasis, Atmospheric Fragments is a forensic inquiry into our perceptive environment, with its augmented lens placing us on the cusp of the ungraspable.
