Happy Halloween 🎃
Halloween is a holiday celebrated each year on October 31, the tradition originated with the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, when people would light bonfires and wear costumes to ward off ghosts. The evening before was known as All Hallows Eve, and later Halloween. Over time, Halloween evolved into a day of activities like trick-or-treating, carving jack-o-lanterns, festive gatherings, donning costumes and eating treats.

Rural News:
A NEW rural event, titled ‘ReGen Gathering’, which took place on Friday 29 September, is set to become a regular feature of the Island’s farming calendar and a forum for innovative ideas.

It is focused on regenerative farming and the community. Like the ‘Groundswell’ regenerative agriculture event in Hertfordshire, which started very small and which now attracts thousands, it is hoped that the Island’s Re-Gen Gathering will enjoy comparative growth and success.

Rural News: History of National World Farm Animals Day 2nd October
Established in memory of Mahatma Gandhi, who believed in treating all living beings with respect, World Farm Animals Day was founded to highlight the poor conditions suffered by some farm animals and promote awareness in the hope something may be done to improve the lives of these innocent creatures. The first World Farm Animals Day was celebrated in 1983 as part of an international movement for the rights of farm animals.

Rural news: Today, Sept. 29, the full Moon will also be a Supermoon because the Moon is at the nearest point in its orbit of Earth during the full Moon. Known as the Harvest Moon, it will also be the year's fourth and final Supermoon. The previous three full Moons – one in July and two in August – were also Supermoons.

Rural News: A Chronicle of Sark 1626-1627

I have just returned from Sark – well, metaphorically speaking. It was not today’s Sark, but the Island of Sark in the 17th Century. My knowledgable guide has been Dr Richard Axton MBE, an eminent scholar, Emeritus Fellow of Christ’s College, Cambridge, a great lover of Sark and latterly a resident there; in his later years, Richard led the Société Sercquaise as director and archivist. He received the MBE in 2021 for his services to heritage and the environment in Sark.

Rural News: Let’s start by talking about the weather – after all, we are British.

The weather recently has been quite vile at times – as readers may have noticed – and supermarket shelves have had some surprising blank spaces where everyday, mundane products should have been stacked up.

It is, of course, not a new phenomenon that in bad weather shipping can’t reach us – but somehow in recent years, those gaps along shelves have become more common and regular and not just the result of one stormy winter. At different times it could be a sudden mustard famine, or mixer drinks, or tomato ketchup, or Greek yoghurt… as shoppers these days, increasingly we need to ‘mind the gaps’.

The recently announced Lieutenant-Governor of Jersey’s Agriculture and Horticulture Bursaries: could this herald a regeneration for the Island’s farming industry? By Alasdair Crosby
