đŸŒ±Archer Daniels Midland (ADM) explores the forces fuelling innovation in the alt-protein space đŸŒ±

As the world grapples with the challenges of feeding a growing population, mounting concerns surrounding food security, health and wellbeing, and sustainability have prompted a search for the innovative and scalable solutions that can serve to create a more resilient food system.

The quest for expanded protein options has been propelled by new advancements in food technology, rising environmental awareness, and shifting consumer preferences, alongside a surge in investments and R&D. Understanding the factors driving this expansion is critical for anticipating the transformative potential of the alt-protein space, and its power to revolutionise how we produce and consume food.

As food and nutrition giant ADM releases its new 'Alternative Protein Report', subject expert Jacquelyn Schuh (Global Protein & Savory Marketing Director) outlines the four key forces currently driving expansion of the alt-protein ecosystem.

Food price inflation has been a prevalent theme of 2023, as consumers and businesses alike were forced to adjust their outgoings to combat strained budgets and swelling overheads.

Encouragingly, the numbers seem finally to be trending in the right direction, although the underlying causes of that food price inflation (the Russia-Ukraine conflict, Brexit, and production setbacks) have not gone away, meaning the return to normalcy may yet take considerable time.

Businesses may not be able to wait that long for prices to drop, but by optimising operational efficiency and minimising waste, they can lower their own overheads and even pass some of those savings on to beleaguered consumers. The key to this is embracing innovation - and the best place to look is the field of technology, according to Studio Graphene founder Ritam Gandhi.

💚Could the solution to our ever-mounting plastic packaging problem lie in the seas? Pierre-Yves Paslier and Rodrigo García González – co-founders of award-winning London-based start-up Notpla – believe so.

Just 9% of all the plastic ever produced has been recycled, and just 12% has been incinerated. The rest lies in landfills or has been dumped into the oceans. Yet this year's Earthshot Prize winner, Notpla, offers an innovative and compelling alternative to plastic – made from seaweed and plants – and in so doing, the firm aims to 'make packaging disappear'.

Totally natural and entirely biodegradable, Notpla’s innovation can be used to create a range of packaging products, including as a bubble to hold liquids. Indeed, at the 2019 London Marathon, some 36,000 Notpla-made 'Oohos' – filled with Lucozade – were handed to runners. Last year alone, Notpla made over 2 million takeaway food boxes, with Notpla partner Just Eat Takeaway.com supplying such seaweed-coated packaging for restaurants to buy on their webshops in the UK, Austria, Poland, Germany, the Netherlands and Ireland. Notpla estimates that in the future, over 100 million plastic-coated containers could be replaced in Europe by this sustainable solution.

The company continues to research and develop new formats and solutions, with a seaweed paper, flexible films and rigid materials currently in the pipeline.

Certainly, the positive environmental impact of Notpla’s innovations is both wide and varied. Seaweed farmed for its production captures carbon 20x faster than trees, while the biodegradable nature of the packaging itself means less plastic clogging our seas. Meanwhile, seaweed farming creates new opportunities for fishing communities.

Notpla is just at the beginning of its journey, with new materials in development that could one day replace single-use plastic packaging applications across various industries and at a global scale. “14 million tonnes of plastic enter our oceans each year," reports Notpla Co-Founder and CEO, Pierre Paslier. "We founded Notpla when we discovered the solution lies in our oceans too."

The Earthshot Prize

An eye-watering 6.3 billion tonnes of untreated plastic waste currently litter our streets and fill our seas. Notpla – winner of the recently announced £1 million Earthshot Prize – shows us that the future is not plastic, it’s seaweed.

With the aim of promoting high quality EU organic produce across a number of target markets, Organicity’s stand at this year's THAIFEX Anuga Asia expo will showcase an array of gourmet brands and products – ranging from special organic Italian oils, to speciality sauces, parmesan cheese, artisanal pasta made from high-end flours, snacks, truffles, risottos, organic jams and marmalades, alongside special pistachio and nut spreads.

A spokesperson for Organicity Project said that with the appearance at this year’s THAIFEX – Anuga Asia, the initiative aimed to “reach out” to consumers, importers, distributors, and restaurateurs with a particular focus on the markets of Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia and Singapore.

Organicity aims to encourage an understanding of the meaning of European Organic labels, the difference between ‘natural’ and ‘organic certified’ products, the nutritional aspects, and how to cook and consume such produce.

💚 Interesting news coming from NYSE-listed nutrition giant ADM, which has entered into an agreement with Air Protein – a pioneer in air-based nutritional protein that requires no agriculture or farmland.

Air Protein's first state-of-the-art 'Air Farm' facility – located in San Leandro, California – serves as a "prototype protein farm of the future", demonstrating how protein and other ingredients can be created using simply air, water and energy as inputs.

ADM will work with Air Protein to develop an array of ingredients that are rich in vitamins and minerals, flavour proteins, colour proteins, and functional proteins that can deliver on a range of texture applications.

Already a strong investor in Air Protein prior to this new Strategic Development Agreement, ADM's continued commitment to building a more sustainable food system has helped Air Protein to significantly accelerate and scale its Bay Area ‘Air Farm’ alongside other growth initiatives, according to Air Protein Founder, Lisa Dyson, PhD.

“Food security and sustainability are two of the enduring trends driving the growth and evolution of protein demand, and ADM is at the forefront of expanding the entire protein ecosystem,” said Ian Pinner, ADM’s SVP of Strategy and Innovation. “We're proud to be a strategic investor in Air Protein, and with today’s agreement we’re expanding our partnership to bring ADM’s industry-leading expertise in flavours and complete nutrition solutions to help expand the universe of applications in which Air Protein’s technology can be used."

Congratulations to Majlen Fazer – Senior Specialist in Product Quality, Cocoa and Chocolate at Fazer, Finland's largest food group – who has been announced as winner of this year's prestigious ISM Award.

On 23rd April at ISM Cologne – the world's largest and most important trade fair for sweets and snacks – the awards ceremony will pay tribute to Ms. Fazer’s commitment towards achieving more sustainability in the sweets and snacks industry.

The passionate chocolate expert and granddaughter of Swiss confectioner Karl Fazer has stated that in addition to an unerring focus on product quality, the environmental aspect has always been important to her – i.e., that the production chain is transparent and the origin of the cocoa is sustainable. Cocoa farmers who supply Fazer are therefore guaranteed a good income, and the living environment is handled responsibly. Moreover, circular economy principles have been implemented in Fazer’s factories and across the value chain to reduce the volume of waste.

With consumers increasingly seeking out healthier F&B products that nonetheless have a no compromise approach to flavour and nutrients, Better Juice Ltd's success in reducing simple sugars in natural berry and other fruit juices is a significant milestone – for both the company and for the juice industry alike.

With a growing demand for naturally sugar-reduced juices, the food-tech start-up's groundbreaking technology achieved remarkable results in recent trials conducted with GEA Group – one of the largest suppliers of food processing technology – at a pilot unit established last year in GEA’s innovation centre in Germany.

The team was able to reduce the simple sugar content by 30% and 50% across a range of forest fruit juices, including strawberry, cherry and blueberry, while preserving their characteristic flavours and textures – in clear NFC (not from concentrate) juices and dense concentrates, as well as in pulp-retained juices.

Created by leading drinks industry innovator Giuseppe Gallo, newly launched vino aperitivo SAVOIA Americano has just picked up the top award in the ‘Lite with Bite’ category (0.5% to 18% abv) at the People's Choice Drinks Awards 2023.

Demonstrating the UK’s continued love for lower abv drinks and the bitter-sweet aperitivo category, the win is also testament to Italspirits by Giuseppe Gallo – the force behind the new brand – which continues to exceed expectations, having already been awarded a clutch of accolades for the innovative new aperitivo.

Representing a perfect mid-point between the red bitters (“amaro”) and sweet vermouths (“dolce”) – and capturing both styles in one timeless-looking bottle – SAVOIA Americano is a liquid that's not only a delicious aperitivo in its own right, but also a versatile all-in-one base for a variety of drinks, and perfect for anyone looking to make classic Italian cocktails.

Made with exceptional and predominantly Italian ingredients, SAVOIA Americano starts from the ugni blanc white wine blended with 14-month oak-aged DOC Marsala Fine wine and aromatic herbs – including bitter orange, artemisia, gentian root, aloe and mandarin – as part of a complex blend of over 20 hand-selected botanicals.

The beverage is inspired by an authentic recipe – ‘Bitter di Milano’ – that dates back to 1897. It is vegan-certified, 100% natural, and contains significantly less sugar than other red bitters or vermouths on the market. Moreover, SAVOIA Americano is the first of its kind to use the 14-month oak-aged DOC Marsala Fino wine, adding to its unique flavour.
