HEIGHTS OF ABRAHAM - SUMMIT TEAM CELEBRATE 50 YEARS since the restoration of the Estate.

The Summit team gathered at the Heights of Abraham this morning to present Chairman Andrew and Vanessa Pugh with a special commemorative cake, bubbly and flowers, marking the actual 50th anniversary of when the Pugh’s took over the stewardship of the 60 acre estate and began an ambitious restoration project which has led to the Heights being recognised as one of the UK’s premier visitor attractions.
50 years ago, on May 20th 1974 Andrew and Vanessa Pugh took over at the Heights, and began to build their business together. The estate was in a poor state at the time, with no proper paths, an electric supply precariously fastened across the trees, a dilapidated Victoria Prospect Tower, and just the front part of the Great Masson Cavern open to the public. For the first few months, with no electricity in the cavern, Andrew would push a wheelbarrow up the hill to bring paraffin to light the cavern passages for guests to safely navigate.
The restoration period (as Andrew Pugh calls it) lasted for ten years, culminating in the installation of the UK’s first cable car gondola system in 1984.
Today, managers, summit supervisors, catering, retail and cavern teams gathered at the summit to mark the 50th anniversary before opening to the public at 10.00am. Live music and living history actors were added to the list of usual attractions, exhibitions and facilities to make the day that little bit more special.
Andrew said today; “We are delighted at how popular the Heights has become, attracting visitors from all over the World. It’s very satisfying to see the potential we saw in Matlock Bath all those years ago has been rewarded. We wouldn’t be where we are today were it not for the support of local residents and the authorities, we’ve had a wonderful life – so far!”
The Heights is open every day until 3rd November 2024, before closing for a short period in order to prepare for the first ever “Lights of Abraham” Winter Illuminations Trail which begins on November 22nd and runs until the end of the year. See website for full details www.heightsofabraham.com

BAKEWELL COUNTRY FESTIVAL - Sunday 14th July 2024
The countdown has begun to our biggest and best Bakewell Country Festival on July 14th - and despite the dreadful weather in the early spring the showground is drying out nicely and will hopefully be in tip top condition.
This year there are so many exciting things to do at this year’s event you might have trouble fitting it all in.
Good news for traditionalists - we have a sheep competition for the first time since 2017, thanks to local farmers Harry Madin and Richard Chapman, and we’re also planning to have cows too. The ever-popular Heavy Horse competition will be back in the centre ring with Bakewell a qualifier for the Young Handler Championship at the Midland Shire Foal Show in September. And, of course, there is the long-established two-day Dog Show – starting on the previous day, Saturday 13th July.
For the children there is an opportunity to handle small animals and meet larger ones from the farmyard with the Lane End Farm Trust.
As always the emphasis for the Festival is on a good family day out and one popular new activity guaranteed to bring them all together are the free drumming workshops where mums and dads and kids can experience the joy of group drumming.
There are interactive music workshops too in the Kids Tipi where youngsters will also find a variety of fun craft sessions from making crowns to decorating gingerbread men.
On the rest of the Showground you can learn survival skills, create a beautiful bouquet, have a go at archery, scale the climbing wall or visit the Medieval Village where there will be blacksmithing, candle making and combat displays. You can visit our local craftspeople who will be demonstrating their skills through the day. And when you need to sit down you can go to the culinary theatre where there are rolling demonstrations from the top chefs in the area.
Throughout the day there will be entertainment on the Festival Stage and lots of places to buy food and drink. There will also be plenty of opportunity to indulge in some retail therapy with carefully chosen, mainly local traders plying their wares throughout the showground.
A Festival like this doesn’t happen without the help of our volunteers – if you have a few hours to spare and would like to join our team please call Society Manager Bridget Hope on 01629 812736. And if you want to know more about the day – go to our website www.bakewellahs.co.uk which is where you can buy pre-show tickets at a reduced price £13 (£16 on the day) with the under 15s free.
On another topic – we are delighted that we have been able to support a number of people wanting to learn dry stone walling, thanks to our training grants. Don’t forget – if you know anyone who might benefit from these grants please let Bridget know.

WARM WEATHER LEADS TO RECORD BREAKING WEEKEND FOR THE HEIGHTS.

The Heights of Abraham experienced a record breaking May Bank Holiday weekend, when the sun finally came out to join the 50th anniversary celebrations at the award-winning visitor attraction.

The Heights hosted a special “Victorian Weekend” with overground historical tours led by Benjamin Bryan, the infamous Heights owner from the 1840’s, whilst Victorian cavern guides took guests underground to learn more about life for the lead miners under Masson Hill.
The three day event was topped off with live music under the garden pergola, and every seat in the Vista restaurant, and out on the terrace, was occupied by guests, who had travelled from as far afield as St Austell in Cornwall, Isle of Wight and North Shields. The furthest away visitors had travelled from Tamil in India, Columbia and the Netherlands to enjoy a day out at the Heights.

David Thornton, Head of Marketing for the Heights of Abraham said “It was wonderful to see so many people had travelled to Matlock Bath to be with us this bank holiday weekend. The Heights is celebrating both a ruby and golden anniversary this year, and the Victorian Weekend was introduced to shine a spotlight on our heritage and remind people that Princess Victoria visited us almost 200 years ago”.

The next event at the Heights of Abraham will be the big music weekend, which takes place on the 18th and 19th of May, whilst the actual 50th anniversary of the Pugh Family beginning the restoration work on the estate will be celebrated on Monday 20th May with a special Harp recital in the amphitheatre.

The Heights of Abraham is now open daily from 10.00am until November 3rd. The Lights of Abraham, a new winter lights trail will operate from 22nd November until Christmas week.

Further details about the estate can be found at www.heightsofabraham.com

HARDWICK HALL, Derbyshire 2023
Hardwick Hall in Derbyshire is an architecturally significant country house from the Elizabethan era, a leading example of the Elizabethan prodigy house. Built between 1590 and 1597 for Bess of Hardwick, it was designed by the architect Robert Smythson, an exponent of the Renaissance style. (Wikipedia).
