DJ Scoundrel (as named by the Bierkeller because he didn't want a name) is a 20+ year veteran of the UK rock DJ scene and has had the immense fortune of pretending to know what he's doing in some of the UK's top rock venues including (but probably not limited to, his memory gets hazy sometimes):

- Phuct Lanes - Bristol (current residency)
- Bierkeller - Bristol
- Bogiez - Cardiff
- The Scou

ndrel Club - Which has moved around a tad, we'll say "on a beach somewhere" for now)
- Judder! - Cheltenham
- The Rock Playground - Bristol
- Metros - Cardiff
- Rock Inferno - Cardiff
- The Saturday Apocalypse - Cardiff
- JBs - Dudley

And a plethora of other weird and wonderful guest slots at clubs, bars and festivals across this great land. Because people drink alcohol which clouds their thought process when booking people to play records to people…. Dear Germans, please book him. He quite likes to write in the third person, and whiskey.

So, PSYCHO! - MetAlternaRock Chaos - Art Club - Saturday June 15th 2024 happened and now the dust has settled, the smoke has cleared and the hangovers have (hopefully) all dissipated.

Thanks so much to every single one of you who came to party, and also to those who couldn't make it but wished us well. We truly hope those who did come had a good night. If anybody has any feedback of any kind (good, bad or anywhere in-between) then we're all ears.

Also a vast array of thanks to Art Club who were the best hosts any night could ever hope for. Absolute legends in every sense.

And so we ask: how do we all feel about another one? Or even making it a regular event on (perhaps) a monthly basis?

Await all of your thoughts x

The week is here! The launch of PSYCHO! - MetAlternaRock Chaos - Art Club - Saturday June 15th 2024 lands this Saturday and we are very, very excited to see if there's enough demand to warrant this becoming a monthly affair (deliberate challenge set - doing a trial run on Download festival Saturday, on the same weekend as PHUCT - Bristol's Rock & Metal Alternative - Friday June 14th 2024 is the ultimate way to see if a clubnight has potential or not), but I am very much looking forward to DJing with DJ Nutzie again at Psycho, not to mention Missy Malice and Haggis on Friday at Phuct

Advance tickets available for both via https://linktr.ee/djscoundrel

As a reminder - the Art Club venue is a downstairs venue so it's not fully accessible for all at present. It's still a relatively new location so it is being worked on constantly so that may not stay the same.

Right, back to counting down the minutes I go.....

Random musing about music, brace yourself, this is an incoherent train of thought kind of post.

I honestly think we're in the middle of a defining era in music right now, as so much new music which is landing seems to be breaking new ground and smushing genres together (or even creating new ones) in ways we haven't seen for a pretty long time.

With a lot of the previous times when this has happened there has been an underlying social/societal cause behind it, but this time I actually think there may be multiple happening at once which is why the music is turning out to be so uniquely interesting (and why there is so much in the way of polarising opinion about some of it).

On one side we've got an almost Rage Against the Machine movement, writing genre-breaking music designed to question and smash the system. A side where human rights and the concept that anybody can be whatever they want to be, without fear of oppression or persecution should be the way of life - and it's creating some spectacular tunes from some incredible artists.

Then on the other side you've almost got a contradictory side to that. A side of very angry music which is raging against many of the things which are changing in society due to the above group. A side which is almost saying 'you're doing this at the expense of others who were previously marginalised and we're mad as hell about it'. This side seem to like to use controversy a little more in their musical creativity, and there's a hell of a lot of 'in your face' about the music being created. It's still pretty bloody banging and I suspect the lyrical content either attracts people, or pushes them away.

I guess this has stemmed from a generation raised on a polarised internet, with a polarised media who have all now grown up to be creative, but it feels like musically at least, it's making for some really groundbreaking stuff.

As an old guy who is often so far on the fence he gets splinters in his dangly bits: I like it.

(This entire post has stemmed from listening to some AMAZING new music today)

25/04/2024

I've not streamed on Twitch in quite some time, mostly due to life related reasons but also due to a few tech matters that I've not had the time to fix.

That might change down the line, but it'll be a while if so - but that's not the point of this update.

I've just been informed by Twitch that I still somehow have a paid subscriber left, that rolls over each month.

Whilst that's incredibly nice (and the small portion of that money which isn't taken by Twitch will of course go to charity as always) I am hoping whomever this lovely person is will see this post and it'll jog their memory to cancel said subscription as you're giving money for no content at present.

Super sweet gesture but please, save your £4.99 a month. Give it to charity directly if you'd prefer as that way the charity gets all of it.

Sets will remain mostly in real life at least for a little longer, so PHUCT - Bristol's Rock & Metal Alternative - Friday May 10th - Bloodstock ticket giveaway and PSYCHO! - MetAlternaRock Chaos - Art Club - Saturday June 15th 2024 are the next two clubs on the horizon.

A bit of news to read whilst opening your eggs:

We lost the Keller but always stayed Psycho, so please join myself and DJ Nutzie on Saturday June 15th (which may or may not double as a birthday celebration) for a blast of alternative rock and metal fun at a venue never touched by the alt scene.

This is a bit of a trial run. Art Club has an earlier licence than a lot of venues so this is somewhat of an experiment to see if a 9pm-1am rock out can work. If it does then expect this to be a regular thing.

I'm personally a big fan of this venue. It's got a great layout, a good capacity to create a good atmosphere without being cramped and the people in charge of it really do like things a bit quirky, so I'm a bit pleased to be putting at least one event on in it.

A proper event will go up soon, and tickets will be on sale at the same time.

Hypothetical question (only really suitable for those who don't go to Download in view of how it clashes every damn year):

If I were to put on a one-off/tester clubnight in the middle of June (most likely June 15th, which is the night after Phuct) in a very, very different venue within the centre of Bristol in order to celebrate my own birthday (yep, I know, narcissism in full effect, but I haven't celebrated it properly in years), would people be interested?

If it helps sweeten the deal I may well invite a certain DJ Nutzie to come smash tunes out with me......

These photos absolutely fill me with all the joy.

That has got to be one of our most feelgood, party-filled festive nights ever.

Phuct has been an absolute pleasure to play over the course of this year. It genuinely feels like the hard work (from promotion, to artwork, to getting the right musical balance amongst other things) has really started to show results.

And it's absolutely thanks in every way to all the lovely folk who come along and dance with us each month. Each and every one of you is appreciated.

Roll on January 12th when we get to land at The Lanes once more!

Some hours to go before doors open again at Phuct. Unless you're reading this in some hours, in which case doors are already open or have opened and are now closed again.

I'm very tired, which probably means I'm going to drink far too much whiskey.

But don't let that sway your decision whether to come in any way, shape or form.

Brace, Brace, Brace!

It is indeed that time again. It’s the tail-end of September 2023 which means that a new crop of bright eyed, bushy-tailed young adults are leaving home for the first time and spreading themselves all over the country (and world), embarking on an educational journey which will likely involve more pints than prose, more shots than singularities and more parties than Panspermia theories (yes, I picked the last one because “sperm” was mentioned in it – I am unspeakably juvenile – we all know this).

And, as is tradition during each freshers week, I go ahead and publish a list of albums which came out in the 12 months preceding when each of these 18 year old freshers were born – just to make you (and I) feel really old.

Why do I do this? Well it used to be because I was going slightly mad hearing rock and metal clubnights playing PURELY songs which pre-dated the students they were designed to entertain and I wanted to point out how much nights were shooting themselves in the foot. Though these days it seems that most of these nights have (unsurprisingly) died a death and those that are left pretty much understand the need for some balance between old and new (and a lot of the now-deceased nights seem to have morphed into theme/gimmick nights which are designed just to attract the older crowd pining for their glory days – nothing wrong with that but it was inevitable that it would happen). Those nights which survived: I salute you.

So, onwards and upwards we go, LET’S DO THE LIST:
System of a Down – Mezmerize
System of a Down – Hypnotize
Avenged Sevenfold – City of Evil
Fall Out Boy – From Under the Cork Tree (Sugar, we’re goin down, but we might not get back up if our backs give out….)
Nine Inch Nails – With Teeth
Rammstein – Reise, Reise
Linkin Park & Jay Z – Collision Course
Foo Fighters – In Your Honor
Static-X – Start a War
Panic! At The Disco – A Fever You Can’t Sweat Out
The All American Rejects – Move Along
Jimmy Eat World – Futures
Disturbed – Ten Thousand Fists
Limp Bizkit – The Unquestionable Truth (part 1)
A Perfect Circle – eMOTIVe
Weezer – Make Believe
Thirty Seconds to Mars – A Beautiful Lie (there’s a joke I want to make about the freshers being 18 but….. I’ll be good)
Trivium – Ascendancy
VNV Nation – Matter & Form
Gogol Bo****lo – Gypsy Punks: Underdog World Strike (we have been wearing Purple for longer than the freshers have been alive it seems)
The Dropkick Murphys – The Warrior’s Code
Children of Bodom – Are You Dead Yet?
Parkway Drive – Killing with a Smile
Queens of the Stone Age – Lullabies to Paralyze
Mudvayne – Lost & Found
Gwen Stefani – Love. Angel. Music. Baby (This Sh*t IS Bananas it seems)
Simple Plan – Still Not Getting Any
Evanescence – Anywhere But Home
Good Charlotte – The Chronicles of Life & Death
Gojira – From Mars to Sirius
Therapy? – Never Apologise, Never Explain
Clutch – Robot Hive/Exodus
The Bloodhound Gang – Hefty Fine (I kid you not, “Uhn Tiss Uhn Tiss Uhn Tiss” just came on my random playlist as I typed this – spooky!)

Amon Amarth – Fate of Norns
Devildriver – The Fury of our Maker’s Hand

2014 has, frustratingly, been eaten by time so I don’t have that for you anymore, sorry.
So, there we have it for another year. A big, long list of albums which were released BEFORE the current crop of uni freshers were released. I have particularly enjoyed this one as not only are there some absolutely brilliant albums in it, but that a lot of them will (I suspect) hit the mark with a generation of people which previous lists haven’t (as yet) hit. Roll on next year when we can do it all again.
As for me, I shall be getting my head back 'into the game' in a few weeks as Phuct will be opening it's doors once more for PHUCT - Bristol's Rock & Metal Alternative - Friday October 13th - when I hope to play music from the above era, since the above era, and before the above era in a relatively well-balanced manner. You absolutely should come along and meet some of the freshers for yourselves.

I await your abuse in T-minus 3, 2, 1.....

This week

You have been warned

07/06/2023

I think I should probably clarify something as a post of mine has resurfaced where I announced I was ceasing to DJ and hanging up the headphones and I've had a number of messages about it asking when my final night is and what's happening with Phuct etc.

The post in question is actually 7 years old and has resurfaced due to it suddenly getting a comment on it all these years later, so please rest assured that I'm not currently undergoing a retirement cycle (I've done that a lot over the years, the post in question was my third and most recent retirement I think) and as such I'm not giving up by any stretch.

Whilst I've got your eyes here of course I will remind you that PHUCT - Bristol's Rock & Metal Alternative is at The Lanes this Friday and anybody who isn't hanging around a racetrack near Castle Donington would be more than welcome to come party with us.

There we go, clarity complete. Hopefully.

21/03/2023

I was really hoping I could stream this weekend however a broken foot has kinda put paid to that.

Hoping I'll be functional enough in three weeks to play at PHUCT - Bristol's Rock & Metal Alternative: Official Bloodstock promo night - Ticket giveaway - which you should probably go to whether I am or not because it'll be great.

In the meantime I'll not be licking my wounds (licking my own feet? Not a chance) but will be feeling sorry for myself as two days in and I'm already bored.

Feel free to send arcade machines to keep me sane-ish.

14/03/2023

Apparently I'm now a Facebook "rising creator"

This will lead to all the innuendo imaginable.

No further news to report at present, though this might change if a recent enquiry turns into reality.

03/03/2023

Oooh, I have been far too quiet on this here page for a little too long.

I'd say sorry but if anybody has missed me then chances are you need some variety of psychiatric help (or better music taste maybe).

Anyway, I wanted to publicly thank Missy Malice and Antony Pepler for being so ultra kind as to book me for Fiendish Bristol Alternative Fe**sh Event the weekend before last. Despite carrying a bag of nerves so huge it had me bouncing around the venue before opening, a swift administration of alcohol and some of the most lovely people ever showing up (and a heck of a lot of them) I really did enjoy every moment playing there and my hazy memories seem to recall my sets going down quite well.

I believe the setlist is due to be published at some point and as soon as it is I will share it here too. If you like you music pounding and dark, and your nights a little bit pervy then I strongly, strongly recommend you make a future event.

Next up for me is the return of Phuct on Friday March 10th at The Lanes - very much looking forward to getting back on that stage and making an ass of myself.

Since Fiendish went so well I continue to hunt for new and interesting places to play, so if you've an event that's a little different and comes with a fun challenge musically then please do throw me a message - happy to travel and very much enjoying some of the off-the-wall bookings I've taken lately (I'd say it keeps me off the streets, but the number of times I've found myself wandering the streets at 4-5am post a set has been pretty substantial lately so that would be a lie).

Aware I'm very behind in terms of doing streams lately. Truth be told life has been pretty hectic so no such plans have occurred, I will try to fix that soon though.

Hope you all have an awesome weekend anyway, and hopefully see some of you at Phuct next week.

Due to technical hitches I had forgotten about I'm afraid there won't be a stream this evening.

Sorry to those who were looking forward to it.

Lightly pondering maybe doing a stream tonight - would anybody be interested in such nonsense?

(Literally only just realised it is Friday - it's been that kind of week)

16/01/2023

That frustrating moment when you manage to get a mix so absolutely perfect and just want to share it with the internet but know you shouldn't as it absolutely should get it's first live airing as a surprise at a real club.

Where, no doubt, I'll get the mix horribly wrong anyway....

09/01/2023

Four posts on this page in a day. Please don't unfollow me for posting too much!

Fun little impromtu stream tonight where I set myself a target in terms of a bit of mixing practice - to beatmatch from 110bpm throgh to 135bpm in a two hour period with as many genre-hops as I could muster.

It was achieved and whilst it wasn't as smooth as I would have liked for every single transition, it was still a good little workout and many thanks to any/all who dropped by to say hello.

Here's what was played:

Rob Zombie - Foxy Foxy
Queen - Another One Bites The Dust
Focus - Hocus Pocus (U.S. Single Version)
Hayley Williams - Simmer [Clean]
Good Charlotte - Like It's Her Birthday
Hollywood Undead - Everywhere I Go (sample)
Korn - Twisted Transistor
Nothing More - Don't Stop
Gary Numan - Splinter
Placebo - Protege Moi
Rico - Psycho Killer
Nine Inch Nails - Only
Depeche Mode - Everything Counts
Type O Negative - My Girlfriend's Girlfriend [Cheese Organ Mix][ #]
Gravity Kills - Last
Linkin Park - A Light That Never Comes
NoJahoda - Nojahoda
Garbage - Cherry Lips (Go Baby Go!)
Faderhead - Sexyback
Korn - A.D.I.D.A.S. (Sample)
The Black Queen - Secret Scream
Fountains of Wayne - Stacy's Mom
YUNGBLUD - Like a virgin
PVRIS - Dead Weight
AWOLNATION - People
My Chemical Romance - Famous Last Words
Ayron Jones - Filthy
The Bloodhound Gang - The Bad Touch
Ghost B.C - Dance Macabre (Carpenter Brut Remix)
The Smashing Pumpkins - Cyr
Kiss - I Was Made For Lovin' You
In This Moment - As Above, So Below
Powerman 5000 - Black Lipstick
Carpenter Brut - Day Stalker
Carpenter Brut - Night Prowler
Pendulum - Fasten Your Seltbelt Feat. The Freestylers
Devin Townsend - Celestial Signals

There will no doubt be more of these over the coming weeks. Next time I will probably have a go at some really low-tempo stuff just to keep things interesting. I expect that one will get grindy.....

Follow-up to previous post.

www.twitch.tv/DJScoundrel is likely to get more use over the coming weeks though the streams in question will be a little different to standard CAT*ALT*CLYSM streams in that I'm going to be doing extra streams just as practice in terms of mixing and improving smoothness of sets etc.

So if you do get a "has gone live" notification at any point for a non-advertised stream then be warned that it's likely to be a lot of trial and error/practice to hopefully help me improve in terms of technical skills/abilities.

Of course all are welcome to tune in, chat and listen - just don't be too disappointed if it's more of a technical workout than an entertainment stream (of course you may find the techy stuff to be entertaining - if so, all power to you).

Just trying to be better as a DJ, and Twitch seems a perfect place to practice that.

Rock, Metal & Alternative DJ. The idiot behind the Scoundrel Club. Collector and player of retro games. Streams all of the above in no particular order.

Bookings!

There's a word I don't use very often, but I feel it's time to throw my name into the hat (or hat into venues at least).

I've recently taken a booking for something a bit outside of my usual comfort zone (info to follow) and I'm very much looking forward to it.

Which has got me thinking that maybe it's time I started accepting a few more bookings than I previously have (at least in recent times).

So, if you have need for a rock/alt/metal/weird DJ at a club or event and fancy booking me for it then please do get in touch. Ideally looking for things that might throw a bit of a challenge (be it a challenging audience, or something a little different musically/vibe-wise) in my general direction.

Happy to travel for the right gig. Please do drop me a message if you fancy this old idiot playing music in your venue.

The dust begins to settle, the smoke fades, the hangovers should be subsiding by now I would hope.

HUGE thanks and all the love in the world to every single glorious one of you who joined the New Year stream last night. It was an absolute honour to spin music in your direction and natter away the night. For a guy who was absolutely sure he would hate streaming when it was suggested to me during lockdown's darkest days I have certainly been proven wrong.

Absolutely eternal thanks to DJ Velocitractor for coming to celebrate on the stream as well. Her sets truly were epic beyond belief and it was a genuine pleasure to rock out with you.

I won't go on some mushy diatribe about making 2023 an amazing year for anybody - I will just say that I hope each and every one of your lives in general are as amazing as they could be, with the whole range of experiences and emotions being lived and appreciated as time goes on - no matter what the year is.
