Do you recognise this showjumping star? The front cover of Horse&Hound in August 1957 featured the mighty Sunsalve, who was then being ridden by his breeder's daughter Elizabeth Anderson. They won the Queen Elizabeth II Cup when the horse was seven, before Elizabeth married and retired from the saddle. New riders, including Pat Smythe, found it hard to gel with him, until he found his way to David Broome. Within a fortnight they'd won the King George V Cup, and were quickly selected for the 1960 Rome Olympics, where they brought home Britain's first ever individual jumping medal – bronze.

“Sunsalve was an unbelievable horse, but you had to let him think he was in charge,” said David.
