Winner of the Hall Memorial Trophy in the 2023 competition, Joanna Lam, gave a brilliant lunchtime recital yesterday in Brentwood Cathedral to a large and enthusiastic audience. Competition administrator Roderick Elms took the opportunity to present Joanna with her trophy following its engraving. The cathedral's music department, led by the cathedral's Master of the Music, Andrew Wright, greatly looks forward to welcoming her back for another recital next year.

We're delighted to announce that the Essex Young Musician of the Year 2023 is Alex Lockyer, a seventeen-year-old cellist currently studying at Brentwood School. He was presented with his trophy and prize of ยฃ1,000 by the High Sheriff of Essex, Charles Bishop.
We had a terrific day of performances, and the other finalists were (l-r): 2nd Prize Joanna Lam (27, piano), 3rd Prize Adam Cubitt (19, cello), 4th Prize Florence Cope (18, viola)

We had a very exciting preliminary round last Sunday, with some wonderful performances. It was heart-warming to see and hear so many enthusiastic young musicians. As is the way of these things, not everyone can go through to the subsequent round, and we look forward to seeing eight competitors this coming Sunday (2nd July) at 2 pm for the semifinal round.
At the end of the semifinal round, the jury will announce the names of the four candidates chosen to go through to the final round at 6:30 pm, which will be presented by way of a concert. Please come and join us for either or both rounds. Complimentary soft drinks will be available, and there will also be a raffle with some very exciting prizes. Those attending the final will also have an opportunity to vote for their choice of candidate to win the Audience Prize.
At the end of the final round, the jury will announce the results, and the prizes will be presented by The High Sheriff of Essex, Charles Bishop.

Everyone is welcome to join the audience for all the rounds of the competition in the Budworth Hall, Ongar. The Preliminary Round will be on Sunday, 25th June, from 2pm. The London boroughs were reorganised in 1965, embracing towns and villages which were previously in the county of Essex. For the purposes of this competition, any town or village that was part of Essex prior to that date will be accepted as qualified for this competition. A first round will be held on Sunday 25th June 2023 at 2:00 pm at the Budworth Hall in Ongar, Essex. The semifinal and final rounds will be held on 2nd July 2023 at 2pm and 6.30pm respectively, also at the Budworth Hall, Ongar, Essex.
The competition is open to musicians aged 28 or under on 2nd July 2023. Applicants must have their home address in Essex, attend school or college in Essex, or have been born in Essex. This criterion includes the old Essex towns of Ilford, Wanstead and Woodford, and villages or towns which straddle the Essex border and which have an Essex-based postcode.
The closing date for entries is 31st May 2023.

ESSEX YOUNG MUSICIAN OF THE YEAR 2022
Dear Friends and Colleagues,
We have received a number of late requests for entry to this year's competition. Upon investigation, it appears that some young people have only recently been made aware of this event and their eligibility. It seems possible that the post-pandemic demands on time, and the recent Jubilee events, have presented challenges in keeping everyone up-to-date.
In order to ensure fairness to everyone concerned, Ongar Music Club has taken the exceptional decision to extend the closing date until Friday 17th June. In view of the necessary preparation time for applicants, we will NOT now hold a preliminary round on 26th June, but rather ask applicants to be prepared to start earlier in the day on 3rd July, if necessary.
To clarify:
1. The upper age limit is now 28 (on 3rd July 2022)
2. Entries will now be accepted up to midnight on Friday 17th June
