Beware the Midlife-Diabetes Trap!
Statistics show that many men and women develop ill-health symptoms when they hit their midlife. This is also part of the reason it is termed ‘the midlife crisis’. As a lot of changes seem to happen at once. These include psychological, physiological and social changes.
One of the changes I will talk about today; is the physiological changes that happen to the body at this stage of human development. The hormonal imbalance at midlife is opposite to puberty due to a cessation of estrogen in the case of women (menopause) and testosterone for men. Puberty heralds the beginning of the reproductive cycle whereas; midlife is the end of it.
Although it is more of a slowing down for men from about the age 40, when their reproductive ability kind of dampens down; for women, the ability to become pregnant ceases altogether.
Some women may exhibit a variety of symptoms such as; hot flushes, weight gain, night sweats, insomnia, anxiety, panic attacks, depression, blood-sugar levels (Diabetes Mellitus) etc. Secondary to the above could be an increase in high blood pressure, a rise in cholesterol levels and other serious symptoms that are usually diagnosed at this point in life.
Men also experience loss of s*x drive, erectile dysfunction, depression, insomnia, fat redistribution such as developing a large belly, or man b***s and; a general lack of enthusiasm or energy.
The good news is that these symptoms can be temporary and can be managed by making changes in your lifestyle and not necessarily by taking medicines.
So, although the midlife stage seems to bring its own health and other challenges, it’s a signal for change. You can manage these symptoms without becoming a ‘junky’ for life. The question is, can doctors really treat a normal phase of life with medication? Remember, it’s not everything that can be solved with a pill.
