CMV contributor Clare Westbrook visited the British Normandy Memorial today and described it as "an amazingly atmospheric place, overlooking Gold Beach, with the remains of the Mulberry Harbour in the distance.
"The Standing with Giants installation is incredibly moving. 1,475 statues representing the number of British troops who fell on D-Day."
For more information on the memorial, visit: https://www.britishnormandymemorial.org/

Pipe Major Trevor Macey-Lillie salutes after his landing at Gold Beach, Normandy marking the 80th Anniversary of the D-Day Landings. Pipe Major Lacey-Lillie of 19th Regiment Royal Artillery (The Scottish Gunners) landed ashore on a World War Two-era DUKW and played a lament at precisely 7.25am marking 80 years to the minute since the D-Day beach landings began.

Our thanks to reader Andy Watters who wrote in to congratulate the Classic Military Vehicle magazine team on the June 2024 issue. "Well, you and your colleagues really ‘pulled out the stops’ on this latest issue," wrote Andy. "There were so many things I found of interest: the unsung work of the Sappers on D-Day beaches, understanding the disasters in practising (ahead of D-Day) and the debate on what ‘The Turning Point’ was in World War Two. I was also interested in the experiences of the husband of my Australian cousin in Vietnam (Centurions in Vietnam). Thanks, and keep up the good work."

It’s time to get excited about the June issue of Classic Military Vehicle, our D-Day 80th Anniversary special, which goes on sale Thursday, May 16. It includes a 32-page supplement dedicated to the events that took place in Normandy 80 years ago. Contributor Neil Huband explores how vital lessons for Overlord were learnt the hard way, through tragedies at Dieppe and during Exercises Smash and Tiger, while Phil Loder reports on how Operation Neptune was planned and enacted by the Allies. And that’s not all, as the issue is also loaded with all our regular great content, including an article on the use of Centurion tanks in Vietnam. Craig Moore also reports on how collector Chris Till managed to change the engine in his M4A1 Sherman in time for it to appear at Tankfest. You won't want to miss this one!

The June issue of Classic Military Vehicle will be on sale from May 16, 2024!
