Check our latest wax offering... Laura Ingalls & Dr Love with the cheeky artwork homage to the Rices and Beans Orchestra

LISTEN >>> https://soundcloud.com/kat-records/sets/laura-ingalls-dr-love-les-editions-poutines-vol1-kat038

Dr Love is a veteran and key tastemaker / vinyl ju**ie on the Montreal scene while Laura Ingalls is a wandering French person of no specific s*x who has recently landed in the French Canadian city and they both bonded over their love of anything disco and....poutine (the main local dish which consists of potato, cheese, gravy and maybe sometimes added meat!). While one is a highly obsessed record digger who can't producer, the other comes up short on most foraging trips but is more than capable behind the dials (we'll let you work out who's who...). "Oh Mon Amour" kicks us off here, an edit of a track by Idris Cheba and apparently a big spin at Le Palace in Paris during the early 80s (when it was released). "Weekend Mouillé" is an odd, jazz-disco thing from the mid 70's, the producer Art Polhemus is actually more a rock producer and this track sticks out like a sore thumb in his discography. Next up, "Ecoute Mon Coeur", written by Peter Godwin, is a Belgium track disguised as Italo and comes complete with all the big synths and big drums as you'd expect - even with added English vox! Finally, "Soul Ma Coco" is a cover of Manu Dibango's "Soul Makossa" (obviously). This version kept the melody and changed the lyrics slightly. Bayete is a South African band but the album was only released in Canada and Belgium. All in all, four tracks that are wonderfully obscure but highly enjoyable - exactly what you need from an edit! Top stuff.

Kat's latest party pancake comes flipped and honey dripped by musicological G-men Andi Hanley and David Barbarossa. Andi and David first met in a forest beside a psychedelic castle in the wild west of Scotland and soon bonded over a love of wrong speeders, Balearic gems hidden in plain sight and the odder side of the dancefloor before DJing together just moments after Andi was unraveled from a burning tarpaulin. A firm friendship and fun partnership was born, using the traditional playground naming convention (putting the first half of one name with the latter half of the other). If you don't know who either of these cats are, I'll offer a quick education. Andi Hanley is a total fu***ng ledge, loved by everyone from Moston to Manhattan, Collyhurst to Copenhagen. Perennial party starter, Piccadilly favourite and DJ champion, Andi's the only man in the world to DJ for both Body & Soul and GTA radio. Mint! David Barbarossa is a lifetime music lover, unbeatable record collector and wildstyle DJ who's unpredictable, explosive sets have outshone KDJ, Young Marco and Jayda G in recent memory.
Drop the needle and disc spins into the stone groove of "Don't Be A Fool", a free-flowing 70s soul roller with gliding fretless bass, conscious lyricism and all manner of neato funk elements (squashie synth blips, dramatic horns and killer latin percussion!) Expect to hear this feature heavily in my setlists. On the B1 Hanners goes solo for a sublime retweak of solid, cosmic soul bomb "Hustlers Of Life Never Survive" by Bamboo. Our main man locks into the hypnotic groove from the get go, letting us have a full serving of forward thinking lyrics, body moving bass and sci-fi synth licks. Must have tackle yo!
Last but not least David joins Andi behind the desk for a perfectly paced reflip of a unearthed cover version par excellence. Hitting the dustiest crates in town the duo turn up a banjo-led blue-eyed-grass soul version of Hall & Oates masterpiece "I Can't Go For That", applying the necessary squeeze to please the modern dancefloor. ACE!

STAFF COMMENTS
Patrick says: Andi Hanley and David Barbarossa drop some tag team edit action on Kat's ass here, working their muso magic on two sleek and sophisticated soul rollers and one brilliant banjo-led cover of yacht groover "I Can't Go For That". Must have tackle!
