I thought I would share the opening of the new Cougarsamurai book (which I am still working on). Please excuse any errors as I haven't fully proofed yet. I'll keep you updated as to when it's finished :). I just thought you might like a taster:

The First Noble Truth

At 82 years young Cougarsamurai sat on his favourite rock contemplating the day ahead. A gentle warm breeze ruffled his fur. Slowly he stretched and stepped down; turning as he did so to smile wryly at the indentations over 50 years of his sitting had left behind.

He picked up his bamboo walking cane, which he now used to support his progress down the river towards the village. He had found as he had got older that the exuberance of youth manifested itself in various aches and pains. Bits of him had worn out which resulted in him needing a little bit of support, especially when the going got a bit rough.

As he walked he enjoyed the morning sun his face. He listened to the unending flow of water as it made its way across the rocks down the stream. The sounds of wildlife reverberated in his sensitive ears and sadly his nose picked up some of the smells of wildlife as well.

After 10 minutes he found himself at the training dojo. He was pleased to see that his newest three students were already seated awaiting his arrival. Cougarsamurai smiled a greeting and then took his seat in front of the class. He cast his gaze at the three students and his mind flashed back to a time when he had taught their grandparents: Hisoka; Denjiro and Kanji.

Mei was so much like her father Kanji. She had more empathy than Cougarsamurai could ever remember experiencing in someone so young. With her long dark hair and wide apart unblinking eyes she exhibited an aura of trust and compassion.
Ren was tall and broad shouldered like his father; however that’s where the similarities ended. Whereas Denjiro had always been excitable and restless, Ren was always placid and calm. So much so that he often needed extra encouragement to complete his daily tasks.

Hinata, son of Hisoka, was, for the most part, an exemplary student. Unlike his father he was full of confidence, almost to the point of arrogance. He frequently came top of the class in both practical and academic subjects. He was the one worried Cougarsamurai the most.

‘Welcome students’ said Cougarsamurai. ‘In today’s lesson we will be examining the four Noble truths’. Of course he knew that the students were aware of what these were but today they were going to examine them first-hand:

‘Can anyone enlighten us as to what they are?’

Hinata put up his hand. His teacher nodded at him:

‘Teacher, the first Noble truth tells us that life is suffering.’

‘Explain further’ said Cougarsamurai.

Hinata looked confused as if what he has said needed no explanation, however he continued:

‘Life includes physical and emotional pain. As we age things become more difficult physically; we may experience illness or disease. Mentally we may experience loneliness, fear, disappointment and anger. All of these things are suffering’.

‘Very good’ his teacher replied. ‘But can you give me an example of suffering you have experience today?’

Hinata wanted to say that he was suffering now as he would rather be outside with his friends than in a lesson. He wisely decided not to.

‘When I woke up this morning I was still tired and would have liked to have spent more time in bed.’

His classmates giggled and his teacher smiled at him.

‘Very good Hinata’. I think we can all relate to that one.

Our success as a species has been made possible by our ability, particularly when our vital interests are threatened, to cooperate. And at the very heart of cooperation is the principle of taking into account the interests and welfare of others. I am therefore confident that we humans will once again find ways, through cooperation, to overcome our current challenges.
