WORLD CHAMPION CYCLISTS TO RIDE INTO TOWN FOR BEVERLEY GRAND PRIX LATER IN JULY

World champion cyclists will be competing in the Beverley Grand Prix presented by Wren Kitchens on Friday 26th July.

Beverley’s town centre will host an evening of top-class racing with some of Britain’s best cyclists lining up for the latest challenge in the British Cycling Grand Prix season.

Almost 300 cyclists will be taking part in the prestigious event, which features six rides and races, and includes the finale of the British Cycling National Circuit Series.

This is the finale of a six-week nationwide series of events, culminating in the awarding of series champions.

Youngsters and keen cyclists from the local area will get their chance to ride the circuit by joining the Beverley Community Ride, which kicks off the event.

The Beverley Grand Prix presented by Wren Kitchens starts at 4pm in Saturday Market, with the action continuing until around 10pm.

People can watch the event for free and are encouraged to line the race route.

On the same day the Paris Olympic Games begin, the event will bring round eight of the Open National Circuit Series and the Women’s National Circuit Series for an evening of fast, thrilling cycle racing.

Triple gold medal winner and six-time world champion, Ed Clancy OBE - the most successful team pursuit cyclist in history – will compete in the Open National Circuit Series, alongside the likes of Matthew Brostock, Robert Scott, and Paralympic double gold medal winner Adam Duggleby.

Plus professional cyclists including Eilidh Shaw, who won the Dudley Grand Prix race last week, and Isabel Darvill will ride it out in the women’s race.

There will also be races for under 12s, under 14s and 16s, and a competition for regional and amateur riders.

Before the races, the Beverley Community Ride offers a chance for families and people of all ages to experience a national level cycling event in the safety of closed roads around a 1.4-kilomtre circuit of the town.

The free ride is being held in memory of Ian Burnett, former head of asset strategy at East Riding of Yorkshire Council, who was instrumental in bringing many cycling race stages to the area over the past 10 years.

Ian passed away in 2022.

Cyclists can ride around the course at a leisurely pace and will get presented with commemorative medals at the end.

To sign up for the Beverley Community Ride visit www.beverleygrandprix.com

The Beverley Grand Prix presented by Wren Kitchens is being organised by East Riding of Yorkshire Council and Generation Pro Cycling Events.

Councillor Nick Coultish, cabinet member for culture, leisure and tourism at East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said: “This a really exciting event.

"People will get the chance to see some of Britain’s best cyclists in action, close up, on the same day the Olympic Games gets underway.

“I would encourage local riders to sign up for the Beverley Community Ride, so they can enjoy cycling on the same course just before many of the country’s best.

“I’m so glad we could bring this back to Beverley and I hope this will being out cycling fans and give a boost to the local economy.”

Beverley has a tradition of supporting cycling races, having previously hosted stages of both the Tour De Yorkshire and the Tour of Britain. The Beverley Grand Prix was last held in 2017.

THIRD PERSON ARRESTED IN LEGACY FUNERAL DIRECTORS INVESTIGATION

Humberside Police officers have arrested a third person in connection with the investigation into Legacy Independent Funeral Directors, which had branches in Hull and Beverley.

A 54-year-old woman has been arrested on suspicion of money laundering offences.

A 46-year-old man, was previously arrested earlier this year, has been taken into custody on suspicion of theft and making or supplying articles for use in fraud.

A 23-year-old woman remains on bail.

Officers removed 35 bodies and a quantity of ashes from Legacy in March after reports of 'concern for care of the deceased'.

“This remains an extremely complex and sensitive investigation and we continue to follow all lines of enquiry and seek answers for the families involved and those affected by this report," said Assistant Chief Constable Thom McLoughlin.

“Three people have now been arrested as part of the investigation, two are in our custody and one remains on police bail whilst investigations continue.

“As we enter the fourth month since the initial report came in to us, we continue to keep the families, friends and everyone affected at the heart of everything we do and are committed to working with partners to ensure that they receive the help and support that they need.

“If you do have any concerns or feel impacted by any element of the ongoing investigation, please don’t hesitate to call the Victim Support 24-hour independent helpline on 0808 281 1136.”

No charges have brought in the investigation as yet.

LEGACY FUNERAL DIRECTORS INQUIRY LINKS 163 TO ASHES FOUND AT PREMISES

Police investigating a funeral director that had branches in Hull and Beverley have said that 163 families have been identified after being linked to ashes that were found.

Thirty-five bodies and a quantity of ashes were removed from Legacy Independent Funeral Directors in March after police received a report of ‘concern for care of the deceased’.

Although Humberside Police had previously said that DNA profiles could not be obtained from the ashes ‘due to the cremating process’, work from documentation found with individual ashes and at the premises has helped to locate next of kins.

“Over the last two weeks, my officers have been making contact with the families identified as part of the investigation,” said Assistant Chief Constable Thom McLoughlin.

“This has been to provide an update as to the ashes recovered and to also arrange personal meetings with them, to offer further support and discuss in detail the process that has taken place and the options available to them.

“We have waited to provide this update publicly until initial contact could be made, as understandably the families are our priority, and the information is personal and private to them.

“The meetings began last week and will take time to complete, with both my officers and support staff from Hull City Council and East Riding Council in attendance, to offer care and assistance to families.

“Some families may want to receive the ashes, and others may not, there is no right or wrong answer and the impact and affect it will have will differ for each individual family, but it should not be underestimated and we will do all we can to support those throughout what is an incredibly difficult time.

“If you have not received a call from us in regard to the ashes recovered, but you have concerns or feel impacted by any element of the ongoing investigation, support is available via Victim Support’s 24-hour independent helpline on 0808 281 1136, and I would you encourage to please get in touch.

“Again, as always, I want to thank the families and everyone in our communities for their understanding as we continue this complex investigation, and we will endeavour to provide answers and updates as and when we are able to.”

HULL MAN PROSECUTED BY COURT FOR INVOLVEMENT IN COTTINGHAM FLY-TIPPING OFFENCE CAUGHT ON CCTV

A man from Hull has been fined by a court for letting his van be used for a fly-tipping offence in Cottingham.

CCTV recorded video of a van belonging to Mark Winter, of Bainton Grove, Hull, which was used in the dumping of waste in Middledyke Lane, Cottingham,

Winter appeared at Beverley Magistrates’ Court on 5th June and pleaded guilty to allowing his vehicle to be used for fly-tipping.

He was fined £81 and was ordered to pay £400 costs and a £32 victim surcharge.

The court heard mobile CCTV cameras belonging to East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s streetscene enforcement team captured footage of a fly-tipping incident in Middledyke Lane, Cottingham, on 19th September 2022.

The video showed a van being driven along the road. It stopped three times and each time the occupant dumped household waste on the roadside, including children’s toys and cardboard.

Following investigations by the team, Winter was identified as the registered keeper of the vehicle.

The case was sent to court after two letters sent to Winter by the team were ignored.

In his defence, Winter claimed that his van had been used by other people at the time and he didn’t always know who was using it.

Residents are reminded they are responsible for disposing of their own waste properly and legally by using household bins provided or by taking larger items of waste to their local household waste recycling site.

Carl Skelton, director of streetscene services at East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said: “We use a number of mobile CCTV cameras such as these at various fly-tipping hotspots to help us track down the people responsible.

“We will continue to investigate every incident of fly-tipping reported to us and always take action when we can.”

Anyone caught fly-tipping could be ordered to pay a fixed penalty of up to £1,000 or the case could be taken to court, where they face an unlimited fine or even imprisonment.

Fly-tipping information:

For more information or to report any fly-tipping or suspicious activity to the council, contact 01482 393939 or at www.eastriding.gov.uk/fly-tipping

People are asked not to touch any fly-tipped waste or approach anyone they see fly-tipping.
