"I love my role at CGI, where I work as a Social Value and Engagement Officer, delivering the social value programme, as part of the Northern Ireland Courts and Tribunals Service (NICTS) business transformation business programme, Themis. This new role combines my skills in tech with my knowledge and expertise within the criminal justice system. The most rewarding aspect of my job is supporting individuals on their rehabilitation journey, guiding them through their learning to build new IT skills that can present real opportunities for employment and a fresh start"

"I never thought that I would find myself here – I went from a technophobe, unwilling to update my iPhone, to a woman passionate about learning and helping others to discover what this industry has to offer. I was pushed into tech out of necessity, but I'm so glad I'm here."

Gemma Weir is the Social Value and Engagement Officer at CGI.

Here, Gemma sits down with Sync NI to talk about the Tech Trailblazer challenge, sharing her journey into a tech career, what her daily work looks like, and why CGI is a brilliant place to grow and build your skills.

"Too many girls drop STEM subjects in secondary school, too few women reach leadership roles in tech, and, across the board, companies are reporting a shortage of qualified candidates.

"Schools need to be properly equipped to encourage and stimulate increased demand.

"It is for this reason that a coordinated effort is needed. We must focus on creating stronger links between schools and industry, making female role models more visible in the media, delivering more targeted mentoring programmes, and providing accessible upskilling routes for those changing careers..."

"Northern Ireland has all the ingredients to be a world leader in innovation, but we need to bring everyone on the journey. My message to women and girls is simple - the tech world needs your ideas, your perspective, and your passion. Go for it."

These are just two of many highlights from an exclusive Thought Leadership article by Clare Guinness CDir, CEO at Belfast Chamber, written for the which celebrates all women in tech, using our platform to encourage more young girls to study STEM subjects and a call-to-action for more women to join the thriving industry which is in .

"Encouraging more women into tech is good for the whole economy, not just for the industry.

"Having a more balanced team brings different viewpoints to the table – which leads to better ideas, stronger collaboration, and more inclusive products. Diverse teams are proven to outperform less diverse ones, and that holds just as true in Northern Ireland. They build better products, make better decisions, and create better workplaces.

"In Northern Ireland, where the tech sector is growing, it makes zero sense to ignore half the population. Encouraging more women into tech is the right thing to do and it’s smart business. There are hundreds of brilliant women working across Northern Ireland’s tech landscape. Some names you might know; others you might not – yet.

"At VANRATH, we’ve placed women into roles where they’ve gone on to lead major projects, deliver groundbreaking products, and transform how businesses use technology day-to-day."

"I realised I wanted a career in Tech when I was about 14. ICT was the subject I enjoyed the most at secondary school, so I guess you could say my interest in technology started then. I completed a National Diploma at the South West College in Enniskillen, followed by a degree at the University of Ulster in ICT, where I was educated by people who were passionate about technology and that spurred me on to the career I have today."

"If you want to work in an industry that grows and changes rapidly, then a career in Tech is for you! I'd also say, where you start out, doesn't have to be where you end up. My career path started in desktop support and today I'm a Security Technology Consultant. A career in Tech means plenty of scope for change."

"I have always been interested in pursuing a career in STEM. Originally, I wanted to study Technology and Design as I love the combination of creativity, science and engineering. My uncle has a very successful career in technology and he encouraged me to try out the IT side of things, and after spending a week doing a work experience at his company, I quickly changed my degree path to Computer Science."

"For me, I love programming. It's like trying to solve a puzzle; you try different approaches, most likely encounter some errors, but it's very rewarding to complete a project and to have solved that puzzle in the end. Especially in Allstate, our projects have a direct impact on millions across the globe and improving our company."

Emma Patton, Data Scientist at , is keen to emphasise how outdated the stereotypes are of people working in the tech sector.

Urging people not to let this deter them, Emma says: “People are more approachable than you think. Seek mentors by reaching out via LinkedIn. You will be pleasantly surprised at how ready people will be to meet you and offer first-hand advice and support.

“The tech world in general is a very understanding and welcoming place – it is extremely accommodating and ready to make your job work for you in terms of work life balance and flexibility, so never be afraid to ask those questions.

"Tech roles are needed everywhere – so if you have a passion for gaming, fashion or travel then there are a lot of opportunities for you.

“Overall, ‘techie people’ are not like how they are represented in the movies and women should not believe these antiquated stereotypes. People are extremely friendly and approachable and it is an incredibly diverse sector to work in. There is no one ‘type’ – as in all walks of life some of us are sporty, some of us are extroverts and some of us are introverts - we are all extremely different!”

Finally, Emma makes a renewed appeal to women unhappy in their current roles to take a leap of faith. “Spend time finding the right career for you,” she says. “Working in something you truly love will make you happy, therefore it is important to take all the necessary steps to find the right career path for you.”

Software NI announced today that global financial services leader Citi has joined its growing membership of 130 local organisations, marking another significant milestone in Software NI’s mission for the region to become a world-leading hub for software innovation.

With a large tech-focused workforce in Northern Ireland - comprising of more than 1,500 Belfast-based technology roles, Citi brings critical local and global perspective and technological expertise to the Software NI vision for a prosperous, digitally driven economic future.

The Software NI goal, dubbed “50 and five by 35,” is to double the software jobs footprint in Northern Ireland to 50,000 by the year 2035, with an estimated contribution of £5 billion in Gross Value Added (GVA) to the local economy. The addition of Citi to its membership aligns strongly with this vision, particularly given Citi’s investment in next-generation technologies and the role the Belfast team has played in this initiative globally.

"I always had an interest in figuring out how things work or solving problems using technology, whether that was through using tech in my job as a sports coach for performance analysis or as a business owner through web design and marketing, I was always utilizing tech and almost subconsciously had an interest in technology and its uses."

"I thought that making a career change to IT was so unrealistic and borderline impossible as it couldn't be further from having a career in sports, but I said to myself 'why not?' and I didn't have a good enough reason not to try! Being a male or female dominated industry should never stop anyone from considering a career they want whether that is a career in sports, engineering, rocket science, or technology."
