New episode out now - I had a chat with Becky Whinnerah, co-founder of Count Me In Collective (CMIC)

Did you know that fewer than 1 in 20 adults with learning disabilities are in paid work in England?

That's a stat that Becky and the collective sets out to address and Becky draws upon her experience as a brewer, landlord, lecturer and parent carer.

CMIC are doing amazing work, establishing a training brewery for adults with learning disabilities and/or autism. They're collaborating with local breweries and hospitality businesses as well as building a brewery at the Castle Tap where we recorded this episode.

All this to improve awareness and understanding and create new opportunities and career paths.

Have a listen as we chat with one of the beer people and - if you can - please follow, support and find out more about CMIC at CMIC.UK

Available wherever you get your podcasts and at wearebeerpeople.co.uk.

In the next episode of , out on Friday, there's a fair deal of strolling in the gloaming, through the wind and the rain in Brighton.

That is at least until the reveals itself and I can head in out of the rain to a warm welcome and a place to hang up my coat and dry off for a while.

Most importantly, it's also where I meet this week's guest; beer podcaster and communicator, Emma Inch ().

We have a great chat covering Emma's journey into the world of beer communication, covering writing, podcasting, music, radio presenting, DJing, mental health and the certain evocative umami smell of a wet dog.

A huge thank you to for hosting us and just for being a brilliant welcoming space with a fantastic selection of beers.

You can listen to the episode from Friday when it will be available wherever you get your podcasts and at wearebeerpeople.co.uk.

NEW EPISODE - Hayley Pearce, Shift Brewer Siren Craft Brew.

I had a great chat with today's guest Hayley Pearce and this is a bumper two-part episode, with part one broadly looking at the first part of Hayley's career and work Fuller's Brewery and part two as Hayley moved to Siren Craft Brew

Hayley's beer career started with homebrewing with her Dad, before joining Fuller's on their graduate scheme, going through a number of different rotations, training to run the big kit, helping commission and run the pilot kit before joining Siren Craft Brew

We cover the differences of working at a family brewer where you're "standing on the shoulders of giants" where beer had been brewed here since 1845. It's a big difference to life at a craft brewery founded 11 years ago that has a range of beers covering everything from west coast, to lagers, barley wines, Belgian beers, braggots, bitters and everything in between.

We talk about keeping fermenters warm with ski jackets, the ballet performance of getting large malt sacks into the mill with a wheelbarrow and the different language of brewing that are spoken at different breweries by different people at different times.

The episode was recorded at one of Hayley's local pubs in Staines, the Swan. It is a beautifully refurbished pub that sits on the bank of the River Thames, much like Fuller's Brewery, that provides many of it's beers and where our guest of course started their , before heading to Siren Craft Brew.

So join us as we have a chat with one of the beer people. Available wherever you get your podcasts and at wearebeerpeople.co.uk. Link in bio.

🎧🍻 NEW EPISODE OUT NOW 👇
Brian Spencer | Marketing Manager | Tap Social Movement

Did you know, around 42% of UK prison leavers are reconvicted within 12 months?*

It's no wonder really that reconviction rates are high.

With just £76 in the pockets of prison leavers to get them on their feet, in accommodation, in work and then a lack of work and personal support networks, they're often not set up to succeed. It can be a trap that's hard to escape.

In this episode of We Are Beer People I speak with Brian Spencer, Marketing Manager at Tap Social Movement to discover how - as a social enterprise including a brewery, bakery and hospitality venues - they are working to improve the prospects of prisoners and prison leavers.

I also speak with Rory, who works at Proof Social Bakehouse, the bakery part of Tap Social Movement, and talk about how it helped give him purpose, direction and support. TSM and the people in it have also helped give him the base to work on his sustainable sports, activewear and street brand, United We Are.

It's a great example of how a business that's built to make a difference can positively impact the lives of prisoners, prison leavers and society more widely.

Oh, and it can do all of that whilst brewing award-winning beers and brilliant cakes, bakes and coffee.

Listen from tomorrow, available wherever you get your podcasts and at wearebeerpeople.co.uk.

We recorded this in the amazing Market Tap in the beautiful The Covered Market Oxford.

What do you think is beer's place in history? How and why has it developed the way it has over time? And what's our relation with beer today?

The guest on this week's podcast (out on Friday 2nd February) should be able to help us with that, as we meet with one of the beer people that is none other than beer writer and historian, Ron Pattinson.

You may know him for his blog, "Shut up about Barclay Perkins": https://barclayperkins.blogspot.com/ or his travel-writing and research on vintage and historic beer styles and breweries. His work has uncovered, interpreted, safeguarded and shared our beer history so that we may know it today and continue to learn from and enjoy it.

Stay tuned for Friday when the episode will be shared wherever you get your podcasts and at www.wearebeerpeople.co.uk.

NEW EPISODE TODAY🎧:

What do you think? Does the term, "sour," work as the first descriptor for what might otherwise be described as fruit beers?

👉 In today's podcast, I'm delighted to be chatting with Andy Barnes, who co-owns with his wife Laura.

And they’ve built up quite the reputation; crafting delicious sour/fruit beers, that blend seasonal fruits and combine yeasts and bacteria to create unique brews, in perfectly packaged bottles.

Andy describes how his hobby of homebrewing got out of control - after winning a homebrew competition he went from brewing 25 litre batches to transforming his garage into a brewery.

We recorded the conversation in the hidden gem that is the delightful cellar of the Three Guineas Pub by Reading Railway Station.

You may be wondering about where the We Are Beer People design came from?

I want to say a big thank you to (over on Instagram) for creating the look and feel for .

It probably helped that Matt is one of the beer people himself; we've brewed wedding beers together and enjoyed the odd beer here and there.

He immediately 'got' what I was wittering on about and brought it to life with the brilliant design and a cast of beer glass people.

If you're after design/website support give Matt a shout! And I'll try my best not to undo his hard work, cheers!

👉 NEW EPISODE: In Episode 3, we have a great conversation with Ruth Mitchell, Managing Director at Elusive Brewing.

Ruth has a huge amount of experience across a variety of roles, working at Adnam's, West Berkshire Brewery, Utopian Brewing, and of course Elusive to name a few.

On top of that, Ruth’s a qualified beer sommelier, a certified cicerone and all-round great person. So who better to talk with about beer and what it’s like working in beer and brewing?

We discuss how Ruth got into beer and her journey in the beer world; her role as MD at Elusive; some of the current headwinds facing breweries, bottleshops, pubs and workers in the industry; creating a welcoming and inclusive business; and exciting homebrew collaborations planned for International Women's Day 2024.

We met at their taproom on the Hogwood Industrial Estate in Finchampstead, just outside Reading and a few moment's walk from Siren Craft Brew. Elusive have just acquired a Unit next to their current space meaning they can expand their brewery and taproom experience and we recorded the episode in their new office.

A huge thank you to you for her time, a great conversation and hosting!

Nobody leaves Prize Old Ale in the corner...

I'm delighted to share our very first episode with a guest who tells the incredible story of how - with a passion for historic beers, the support of others and a good deal of chance - a batch of Gale's Prize Old Ale which had been last brewed in 2006 was safeguarded, blended, brewed and released in 2022.

Today we sit down and chat with Henry Kirk, a much-celebrated brewer and a big proponent of well-brewed beers rooted in history.

Henry's brewed at Fuller's Brewery and Dark Star amongst others and is now setting up his own brewery project, Sunken Knave, and brewing at Hand Brew CO

So join us as we discuss Henry's journey into beer, the importance of time, drinking in dressing gowns, securing Gale’s Prize Old Ale and future plans with Sunken Knave.

Bottles of this year's release of Prize Old Ale are available to buy currently on the Dark Star website.
