We've loved seeing all of the buzz around Cathy Sweeney's latest publication, Breakdown, but have you had a chance to read her first novel, Modern Times?

There was once . . .

🍌 A woman who loved her husband's c**k so much that she began taking it to work in her lunchbox.

🍌 A man who made films without a camera, which transfixed his estranged daughter.

🍌 A couple who administered electric shocks to each other, to be reminded of what love is.

🍌 A world where you wake up one day and notice that, one by one, people are turning blue.

We love this review from 📖 for The Hypocrite by Jo Hamya ✍🏼 🎭

'A man watches his daughter’s latest play on stage, only to realise it is based on a long ago holiday - a father-daughter bonding trip on the Aeolian Islands. Seeing himself represented in the image of someone else’s memory - his own child’s nonetheless - enacted on stage for the eyes of strangers stirs up uncomfortable home truths.

The narratives switches across time, place and voice - making for an interesting commentary on the fallibility of a person’s memory and perspective. I loved the vehicle of a memory play for this purpose - the idea of confronting one’s realisation of their own warped perception of the past, sitting in the discomfort of it without being able to intervene.

I adored Three Rooms. I loved this. Wit and a sharp commentary combined.'

'It happens in the way that most important things end up having happened for her: accidentally, and because she does something he is not supposed to do. And it happens in the fashion of many happenstantial occurrences, the result of completely plausible decision making, a little diversion from the norm that will, in hindsight, seem almost too coincidental: a slight veer and suddenly everything’s free-falling, the universe gleefully seizing that seldom chosen Other Option, running, arms outstretched, like a deranged person trying to clear the aisles in a grocery store, which is, as a matter of fact, where she is, the gourmet place two towns over, picking up some last-minute items for a dinner party for her husband, who is turning sixty today.'

Do you secretly sometimes hate your friends? Have you ever been to an awful dinner with women you have known a dangerously long time? 💙

Then Banal Nightmare is for you. The sadistically precise, completely singular and horribly funny new novel by Halle Butler

The queen of feel-bad literature and author of The New Me is back about a break-up, a group of thirty-something friends and a lot of bad behaviour and misery.

‘Her sense of humour should be studied and celebrated’ David Sedaris

‘Halle Butler is a first-rate satirist of the horror show being sold to us as Modern Femininity’ Catherine Lacey

‘Unbelievably funny’ Jia Tolentino

It’s publication day for ESCAPE FROM SHADOW PHYSICS by Adam Forrest Kay!

***
In , Adam Forrest Kay takes up Einstein’s torch: reality isn’t mysterious or dependent on human measurement, but predictable and independent of us. At the heart of his argument is groundbreaking research with little drops of oil. These droplets behave as particles do in the long-overlooked quantum theory of pilot waves; crucially, they display quantum behaviour while being described by classical physics.

What if the original doubters of our quantum orthodoxy (not least Einstein himself) were onto something? What if pilot wave theory was right all along? In that case, our whole story of twentieth-century physics is topsy-turvy and we must give up the idea that reality is simply too weird to grasp. Weird it may still be, but a true understanding of nature now seems within our reach…
