The Gourmand

The Gourmand An award-winning food and culture journal that brings together inspirational words, images and ideas with the universal subject of food.

The Gourmand is an award-winning food and culture journal with a broad subject base and an international reach. Bringing together inspirational words, images, and ideas with the universal subject of food, the biannual journal was founded in London in 2011 by David Lane and Marina Tweed. The Gourmand is inspired by the multiple meanings associated with food across continents, and particularly by th

e exciting cultural shift that has taken place around producing, cooking, and eating over the past few decades. The Gourmand strives to reflect and inform this shift, and to recognise the communicative power of food, as well as its role as a catalyst for creativity of all kinds. Within the journal’s pages, the past, present, and future of food is represented with unparalleled images, text, and design. The idea for The Gourmand came out of a dinner conversation amongst friends at David and Marina’s table a few years ago. Since then, the publication has strived to capture the exciting work being done at the crossroads of the culinary and creative industries. The list of contributors has grown to include noted photographers, artists, and writers, all of whom are given free rein to explore their creativity and share unusual, engaging, and unexpected perspectives. The Gourmand is distributed worldwide and is stocked at select bookshops, boutiques, galleries, restaurants, hotels, and members’ clubs, and can be purchased online at thegourmand.co.uk. The Gourmand also hosts talks, workshops, exhibitions, supper clubs, and special events.

Priyesh: I am my parents’ youngest son and me and my brother Alpesh are now partners in the business. My mum, Anju, cooks fresh Gujarati food which we sell in the shop on Tuesdays and Fridays.
A few years ago, my mum decided that she was going to sell her food. She started out by making samosas on Saturdays and then she started making chutneys and they were really popular.

Anju (cook): I started cooking at home when I was about 15 years old with my mum in a small village in Gujarat, India. Cooking has always made me very happy.
When I cook, I pray. I stir the good thoughts and prayers into the food so that whoever eats the food will receive them. It feels relaxing, like a meditation. Dal, rice and Indian vegetables remind me of my childhood. It feels like an important connection to my family and I want people here to taste vegetables they might not have tried before.

Priyesh: Gujarati food is not super easy to come by in London. When people respond well to the food it makes us feel really proud and happy.
My grandparents and my parents have always taught us to be accessible to the entire community. We are always trying to work out how to offer something to everybody. My brother is good with that - while our instagram is full of natural wines and fancy crisps, the shop also has a lot of low cost range stuff, lots of good offers and my mum’s food is really good value for the amount of labour that goes into it.

Neela: I do the baking in the shop, it started accidentally. I found a recipe I wanted to make, just for us and it turned out to be a really good cake. Then mum said why don’t you add it to the menu and sell it and then it just went. So we decided to start baking with an asian twist.
I have always loved baking, I’ve been doing it since I was a kid. I find it really therapeutic. It makes me so happy to hear that people are enjoying the things I make.

At in North East London three generations work together to bring delicious home cooked vegetarian food to its loyal customers. Photographer and regular discovers more about the history of the store and the love that goes in to the food.

Priyesh: When people say nice things about the food we always share it with my mum. Serving fresh food has been a big, exciting thing for us.

My grandmother is a role model for everyone in our family. She never says no to doing anything. She’s the pinnacle of health and she’s always been super health conscious. She definitely has more energy than me and is an inspiration to us all.

I didn't realise how vast my family’s cooking knowledge was until my mum started cooking here.Through the food we have connected with the time before she was married to my dad when she lived in India.

My family has moved across the globe and that has really influenced their cooking.  I’m realising that a lot of our food is influenced by my grandma’s upbringing in Zambia; living in Hackney has changed it too. My mum uses plantain and we often eat cassava and aduki beans. It’s in our lineage of food because we didn’t have certain indian vegetables available to us. Adapting certain ingredients is all about my mum and my grandma’s journey to London which tells its own story.

At in North East London three generations work together to bring delicious home cooked vegetarian food to its loyal customers. Photographer and regular discovers more about the history of the store and the love that goes in to the food.

Priyesh: “My grandparents bought this shop in partnership with my uncle in 1979.
Hackney was really different back then. My dad took over in the 90s and married my mum. Each generation makes changes as the years go on and responds to the community around them.

I spent a lot of time in the shop as a kid. There’s customers I’ve known since I was born. My brother’s midwife still comes in , she’s so lovely and it’s such a great connection to keep. I have another customer who remembers me doing my maths homework on the fridge and then as I grew up she really helped me with my interest in art. We get customers all the time saying, I knew you when you were a little kid, or even that they knew my parents when they were kids.”
