Update: Clock restart and building works.

The town clock at Moyse’s Hall Museum is being serviced and will hopefully be restarted on Tuesday, 23rd July. West Suffolk Council which runs the museum has overseen essential building repairs to the 12th Century front of Moyse’s Hall which meant access to the clock had to be stopped for a couple of months. The clock is usually wound by the Heritage team every week, needing nearly 250 turns to keep the large Victorian timepiece ticking.

While it has been disappointing to have to stop the clock, the building repairs have uncovered a fabulous medieval doorway, c12/13th Century, that was possibly last seen around 3 centuries ago during previous restoration. There was also a 17th/18th Century clay smoking pipe fragment and medieval carved stone pieces found within infill of a repaired wall. The team will put together a post about the finds in a few weeks’ time. Watch this space.

Huge thank you to West Suffolk Council’s Property Services for the building works and for helping the Heritage Service catalogue the finds and features. A further thank you to stonemason, John Presly, and Pro-Flat Specialist Services for their care of the building while working here.
