Playstage Senior Great new plays that contain brilliant parts for older amateur and professional actors.

Playstage Senior was formed in 2008 by playwright Lynn Brittney and friends. Unlike other companies that offer playscripts, Playstage Senior is committed to offering plays that contain good parts for older actors, because we understand the needs of most amateur dramatic groups! (plays contain some younger parts but the majority of the roles are for actors aged forty and beyond.)

Just to let you know that Playstage Senior (the only play publisher that caters for good parts for actors aged 40+) has revamped it website, so that it is now mobile friendly and you can post reviews of the plays! (Be kind to the poor writers - they have had no income this year). Also, and this is the most important thing - Playstage Senior is, at this moment, typesetting some new plays ready for when the amateur drama groups reconvene (hopefully) next year. They have even had performance licence applications for next year! It's all looking very hopeful. Join the MAILING LIST and get regular updates about new plays. Go to www.playsforadults.com

If your drama group was contemplating the possibility of doing a pantomime AFTER Christmas 2020 (when hopefully, social distancing will be a thing of the past), can we just remind you that we have some cracking 'Almost Pantomimes'? Funny plays with suggested music where anyone of any age is guaranteed a part! First we have DISORDER IN COURT by Stewart Auty. Little Red Riding Hood and other fairytale characters are up before the judge accused of all kinds of crimes, from porridge stealing to asthmatic stalking (Big Bad Wolf). It's a crime it's not longer than two acts! Then we have FAIRYTALES IN THE 'HOOD by Paul Cockcroft. Red Riding Hood is in this one too, but as part of a streetwise girl-gang called 'Girls in the Hood'. There isn't a problem they can't solve in Fairytale Land - from granny-eating wolves to unhelpful trolls - they have it sorted. All our full length plays are available in sets to read through UK drama libraries, or you can read them cheaply online via Kindle. Visit our website www.playsforadults.com to see our full range at the moment.

British (and Commonwealth countries?) celebration of VE Day in May. We can recommend several items. Firstly, plays - Playstage Senior has THE HOME FRONT (which is like a r***e with sketches about life on the Home Front in WW2 Britain - often performed with a fish and chip supper!) and ANNIE 1,2,3 - a murder mystery all about dirty dealings in WW2. (The first murder happens on a celebration of VE Day - there's a coincidence!) These plays are available from www.playsforadults.com and also through Amazon in book and Kindle format.
Now - in a plug for one of our sister companies - we would like to recommend that if your group is participating in a Fete for VE Day, you need the handy little book BAKE SALE WINNERS from http://irisbooks.co.uk (also Amazon, Ebay and Etsy). Full of recipes for edible items that are guaranteed to sell!

We have two full length plays about the emotions that surround cooking and eating food - both humorous. First up is REDUCE, RENDER AND SWEAT by David Summers.(Carenza Dean is a cookery writer and one-time cookery presenter on TV. However, now her career is in the doldrums, primarily because of her uncompromising attitude and snobbery about food.Fame comes calling but not quite in the way she imagined.) The second play is by an Australian writer, Dorian Mode, and is called FEEDEM FIGHTERS.(Daryl, a chubby soft drinks salesman, finds himself kidnapped by an urban guerrilla organisation called Feedem Fighters – a small group of obsessed individuals dedicated to forcibly slimming-down the overweight, with the collusion of their friends and family. However, Daryl proves to be more than the group can handle!) Go to www.playsforadults.com to read more.

If you want two funny One Act plays, with large casts, (for mature actors, obviously) to bolt together to make an evening's entertainment, then we have the perfect solution. Both plays are about social events. The first MIXED DOUBLES by Lynn Brittney, is about a disastrous tennis club quiz night (the Secretary forgot to send out the invites and it has been over catered, plus there are some marriage problems bout to implode). The second, ABSOLUTE DISCRETION by Stewart Auty, is about a discreet dating weekend for mature singles (some people get a little more than they bargained for!). Two perfectly matched one act plays for a fun evening. From www.playsforadults.com

One Act Play Festivals don't have to be about winning awards. Many groups just want to entertain people and enjoy themselves doing it. If that's your bag then we have some great comedy one act plays. THE LUVVIES by Lynn Brittney (a drama group quiz night that goes wrong) is always popular, as is HERE ENDETH THE FIRST LESSON by Stewart Auty (A Parish Council Committee meeting where the vicar teaches a troublesome councillor a lesson). We also have UNEXPECTED ITEM IN BAGGING AREA (an all female play where a case of 'till-rage' in the local supermarket has unexpected results!) and PROPERLY PROCESSED (a satire on the Afterlife for civil servants). www.playsforadults.com

OK. It's One Act Play Festival circuit time again - starting off in February at local level and building up to the final UK festival in July. For the last few years we have had several of our plays in the semi-finals and finals in the regions. The most dramatic of our one act plays are: A STROKE OF LUCK by Will Butters (one man's tragi-comic journey through suffering a stroke); THE WW1 TRILOGY (DIG FOR THE DIGGERS, AFTER THE BALL IS OVER and GRANDMA'S PHOTOGRAPH) Three powerful one act plays about World War One; A DIFFERENT WAY TO DIE by Lynn Brittney (A Holocaust survivor's ordeal as she is reunited with her husband) and STRAIGHT TO DVD by David Summers (A deeply moving play that explores the true meaning of fatherhood.) All very moving plays.

BUNKERED by Lynn Brittney was our most popular play last year and continues to be so this year. So much so, that we have had to organise a reprint of the scripts this week. So, if you are planning on ordering a set of books and you can afford to wait for a week, that would be great. We will try to meet all demands out of the half a box we have left but we can't promise anything.

OK. Playstage Senior kicked off the New Year with some performances of Stewart Auty's version of Treasure Island (mostly female, very funny) by Thorngate Pantomime and Variety Company in Hampshire (further performances on 18th & 19th of January). There are lots of our writers' plays in the pipeline around the UK (and one or two in North America) that have already been booked. We may also be publishing some new plays this year as well. Busy, busy, busy! www.playsforadults.com

Don't forget that all our full length plays are on Kindle - if you want to have a good read of scripts over the Christmas break. Our one act scripts are slowly being translated into escripts as well and we hope to have them all up on Kindle in the New Year. Otherwise, you can read our scripts and all the drama libraries in the UK (or the reading sets can be ordered to be collected at your local library through the Inter Library Loan services). Or you can purchase individual scripts from our website or order them through your local bookshop. www.playsforadults.com

If you are thinking of doing a pantomime in 2020- there are some interesting alternatives. We have some 'almost pantomimes'. TREASURE ISLAND (a predominantly female version- very funny), FAIRY TALES IN THE 'HOOD ( You don't want to mess with these fairy tale characters - they are all bonkers - really), DISORDER IN COURT (Nursery rhyme characters up before the judge - about as daft as you can get), PICKWICK PAPERS (we know that it is a 'highbrow' Charles Dickens story but it is actually more of a farce - think of the Pickwick Club as a Victorian version of Last of the Summer Wine and you get the picture). There are more comedies at www.playsforadults.com
Don't forget that most of our full length plays can be read on Kindle or, in the UK, you should be able to obtain reading sets at drama libraries.

If you are looking around for ideas for your next production - consider bolting together two one act plays, instead of trying to find that elusive two act play. The advantage of that is that more people get parts, because you have two separate stories. We have some solutions. First of all there is our WINE & WISDOM series of 6 one act plays, all on the theme of quizzes, quiz nights, obsessions with quizzes. All written by Lynn Brittney. Some are comedies, others are dramas. You can pick and choose which two (or three) you perform. Then we have three once act murder mysteries in one book - Jane Page's A FETE WORSE THAN DEATH and other plays. They are lighthearted one act plays in the Miss Marple vein (the amateur detective in all of them being the local librarian). We also have many more one act plays to choose from on our website. Think creatively! www.playsforadults.com

So...what do we think? Fancy rehearsing a murder mystery play after Christmas? We have choices for you. Our full-length Murder Mysteries are good. We have two plays by David Summers - ANNIE, ONE, TWO, THREE (Three wealthy sisters hide a secret from WW2 but then they start to die, one by one...) or A CONVENIENT MURDER (An anti-government activist, about to publish a book that would be embarrassing to the government, dies in mysterious circumstances when his brother-in-law, who works for MI5, is visiting. A little too convenient perhaps?) Then we have three short murder mystery plays in one package - written by Jane Page to be performed at a Murder Mystery Supper Evening and to include the audience in guessing 'who done it'! A FETE WORSE THAN DEATH and Two Other Murder Mysteries, gives you a choice of doing one or putting two together to make a full evening. Read more at www.playsforadults.com

Don't you just get tired of having to glam yourself up to go on stage? We have the answer. Our very funny play - a modern answer to the pantomime - gives actors the opportunity to let it all go. Be a troll, a goat, a cross-dressing wolf, a line-dancing granny, a pantomime dame - so many opportunities to look dreadful! FAIRYTALES IN THE 'HOOD by Paul Cockcroft has two separate stories, bound by a common thread - the Girls In The Hood. A feisty girl gang who sort out the various problems of fairytale characters with just a little commonsense. In the first Act, Red (Riding Hood) has some trouble with a wolf. In the second Act, Trevor the Troll just won't let anyone cross his bridge...and that includes, Cinderella, Hansel & Gretel and various other well-known characters. So, read the play on Kindle, or find the reading set in a UK/Eire drama library. It's funny. Kids will love it and you don't have to worry about looking your best! We have two plays about food - both about using food as a weapon really. The first, REDUCE, RENDER and SWEAT, is a satire about a very snobbish cookery writer who cannot bend her principles and write about cookery for working class people. Even when offered the possibility of an American TV show she won't bend. But she gets her comeuppance in the end! The second is a very funny play called FEEDEM FIGHTERS about an obsessive group of food terrorists who are paid by relatives to kidnap overweight people and force them to diet. This time they kidnap only a slightly overweight drinks salesman called Darryl whose wife has paid the group to take him because she wants to run away with her Pilates instructor. Darryl's mind games eventually wear down his captors with hilarious consequences. Warning! This play is written by an Australian and may easily offend! Be brave! Go to www.playsforadults.com
