We had a great time at Scotland's Trade Fair on Sunday and Monday. We chatted to lots of fantastic businesses about stocking our books, and it's been a great learning experience for our first trade show!

Scotland is so lucky to have a huge range of talented businesses and we learned so much from the other exhibitors.

We loved seeing with the fabby at the in Bonnie on Saturday.

Dancing away to one of mum's favourite bands was a great way to introduce the kids to live music! 🎶

I had a fantastic time speaking about being an author with some local P3 and P4 year groups at their school!

They had some great questions for me, and I loved hearing about some of the stories they've been writing, too! Maybe someday, I'll be buying their books!

We chatted about our favourite books, and here are mine:

When I was wee, Roald Dahl was a favourite as his books were fun, mysterious, and cheeky, and he had his unique magical style!

Another fav is 'The Lord of the Rings'. Who doesn't love a good old adventure to chuck a ring into a volcano, and hang out with hobbits, elves, and wizards? 🧙‍♂️🧝‍♂️

Did you know Christmas Day wasn't recognised as a public holiday in Scotland until 1958? 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

The reason can be traced back to 1640 when the Scottish Parliament passed a law forbidding "Yule" celebrations. What a cheery move!

After Charles II was restored to the throne in 1660, it was no longer illegal to celebrate Christmas, but it's strange to think that it wasn't until a relatively short time ago that it became a public holiday!

Nae wonder these wee lassies look a bit doon!

Thankfully, these days, it looks a bit brighter and more cheerful at Christmas time in Scotland! 🎄

The Night Before Christmas has been a holiday favourite for over 200 years! Whirly Bird Book Co. has lovingly restored the original 1912 edition artwork by Jessie Willcox Smith for these beautiful hardback and paperback books.

With an added new song as Santa calls to his reindeer, The Night Before Christmas is an essential addition for book collectors of this iconic poem.

Two years ago, I decided to write a Scots version of "The Night Before Christmas". I had previously recorded it as an audio for a relaxing story on Insight Timer. I started getting good feedback about it, which, I must say, felt pretty nice!

I sat down to write it properly... then stopped. Who would want to read MY book? I talked myself out of it, but the thought kept bugging me... Why not? What was the worst that could happen? No one buys it. That's what.

So... with only a few weeks till Christmas, no real strategy and fitting it in around the rest of my family life, I grabbed my ever-patient husband, and we cracked on with writing it. It changed into something so much better than we thought it would be! We even added in a wee song!

Initially, we published it on Amazon, and I shared the good news on Facebook... then I was filled with dread when I realised that my illustrations weren't going to print in high enough quality! NOOOOOOO! I knew I shouldn't have done this, I told myself! A frantic edit ensued, and the problem was solved. Phew!

Needless to say, due to the rushed publishing of the book, it only sold a few copies in its first year, but we learned some valuable lessons along the way.
We've found that years two and three have thrown new challenges, but the nicest surprise has been how well the book sells in the US and other parts of the world and continues to grow each year. My kids love hearing that Mum's book is being read by families worldwide!

It inspired us to think about what else we could do. This year, I became obsessed with designing jigsaw puzzles! (Enter that ever-patient husband again!) We're so chuffed with the two designs we've created this year. We use UK-based companies too, as we want to support other businesses while giving our customers great quality and ethically produced products.

We also published new Hardback editions of our signature Scots edition and an English version of "The Night Before Christmas". They make such lovely keepsakes; we're over the moon with how they look and feel.

The Whirly Bird Book Co. has developed from our love of vintage books and art. We are designing all our products in-house, so although the website is currently limited, we are excited to watch it grow over the coming months.

So much goes on behind the scenes when you are developing a business, so we hope you like the insight into what we've been up to!
