Advanced OTDR testing courses.
OTT’s advanced testing courses are normally only available as closed company courses. However, our UK training delivery partner, Cross Connect Training, is delivering a special series of these short courses with some late availability places for individual delegates.
Course dates include:
May 7th to 8th
May 9th to 10th
July 1st to 2nd
The courses will run at the CrossConnect Training Centre in Shipley, Bradford, Yorkshire.
You can also book your own dedicated company courses, to train your team and focus on the specific issues you are facing and the particular test equipment you are using.
See our website for further details https://www.ott.training/main/advanced-otdr-course/ where there is a contact form for you to fill in to request full details.

Why should you go on this course?
It is clear that many of the fibre deployments currently being made in the UK are not meeting the required quality standards for high-performance, long-lasting, reliable networks. The OTDR is the most powerful tool for assuring the quality of the installed fibre infrastructure, if it is used correctly. Unfortunately, too many technicians and installers have had little or no training on correct use of the OTDR and importantly what information is required as a result of the OTDR testing. It is not sufficient to simply hit the green button and hand over some data files! Do not fall for the myth that is promoted by some of the test equipment manufacturers that if you buy their OTDR it will instantly turn you into an OTDR expert. This is blatantly not true!
So, OTT is stepping up to make our world class training available via these short intense, practical hands-on courses. Based on Richard Ednay’s (OTT Technical Director) 40+ years of experience in testing fibre, and his role in setting the International Standards (IEC and ITU) for testing installed fibre optic cabling.
Hope to see you on a course soon!

New training delivery partner announcement! 7th Feb 2024
OTT is pleased to announce the latest addition to our network of training delivery partners around the world: Total Network Solutions Europe (TNSE), based in Staffordshire in the UK.

TNS Europe was established in 2008, by Paul Forster and a team of IT & telecoms industry professionals, to provide specialist training, systems integration and support services covering fibre optics, IT cabling and related activities.
As with all OTT Training delivery partners, Paul is passionate about delivering top quality training with the aim of improving the knowledge and skills of the industry workforce, so that they can plan, design and implement better fibre optic and network solutions. TNSE have invested significantly in equipment and infrastructure to be able to deliver OTT courses to the very high standard expected. This kit includes the latest fibre characterisation system from VIAVI Solutions based on the new ONA-800 platform for use on the course.
TNSE have accreditation of their management systems against ISO 9001 (Quality Management), ISO 45001 (Health & Safety Management) and ISO 14001 (Environmental Management), with both their training and their installation activities within the scope of these schemes.

TNSE trainers have much field experience and also hold vocational awards in teaching and assessing.
Three trainers at TNSE will train up to offer specific OTT certifications. Initially, TNSE will be offering OTT’s Certified Fibre Characterisation Engineer ( ) course, and the Certified Optical Network Associate ( **A) course, in order to extend and complement their existing range of training courses. New UK public course dates will be announced soon.
We welcome Paul and his team to the OTT Partner family and look forward to working with them to expand the availability of OTT’s certifications to connect the world.

This week’s featured training delivery partner is TransAfrican Fibre Services (TAFS) in South Africa. For more than 25 years, Justin Hartley of TAFS has been providing services in fibre optics to the highest standards, including installation, testing and fibre characterisation under the FibreAid brand.

Trans-African...
As well as its deep South African roots, TAFS has continuously expanded its services and ventured into various African countries. TAFS has developed a deep understanding of the unique challenges and requirements that each country faces in achieving reliable and efficient fibre connectivity. This first-hand experience as well as a strong network of local partners enables TAFS to effectively address the specific needs of each African nation.

Installation (COFI-SA) courses
Justin’s focus on quality carries through to the provision of training, where he has built the reputation of OTT’s Certified Optical Fibre Installer (COFI-SA) as the best training in fibre optics in South Africa. As the word has spread about COFI, the demand has increased and so TAFS have appointed Cassim Adam as an additional trainer. Cassim is a very experienced and professional trainer, who will further build the reputation of COFI as the course to attend if you really want to become a competent and professional fibre optic installer.
Public courses are run regularly in Centurion and in Cape Town. Closed company courses can also be arranged, especially if there is a requirement for special training, such as installing fibre in a mining environment, or working with special cables such as OPGW on electricity transmission lines.

Advanced courses
As well as the installer level training, Justin is also licenced to deliver OTT’s optical networking certifications, the foundation level Certified Optical Network Associate **A, and the advanced level Certified Optical Network Engineer . These programmes provide the knowledge required to design cost effective and high-capacity optical transmission systems to build the digital infrastructure that is key to achieving the development goals of Africa. Now that high-capacity submarine cable systems are deployed all around Africa, the next challenge is to link up to these to “Connect Africa’s next billion” a key theme of the Africacom 2023 exhibition and conference to be held in Cape Town on 13th-16th November, as part of the Africa Tech Festival. Justin and the TAFS team will be attending this event and if you would like to arrange to meet up to discuss how OTT’s training and certification programmes can help you and your organisation, then contact Justin directly.
TAFS are planning to take the **A programme on tour around Africa, so make sure you let them know your preferred location for this course to include on the tour itinerary!
Plans are also being made for TAFS to deliver the Certified Fibre Characterisation Engineer course.
Exciting times!

27/06/2023

Beware the training courses out there that are 'Well past their sell by date', some advice from our Technical Director on how to avoid wasting money on obsolete courses. Obviously, the answer is simple: Just get onto an OTT Certification course! Read on for details...

Well past its sell by date!

Whilst surfing around, I stumbled across somebody else’s allegedly ‘advanced’ DWDM training course. I looked at the details and was shocked to find that it was about 20 years out of date, certainly in terms of the technology covered, but also in terms of the learning methodology.

The course included some transient, long-obsolete technologies such as the use of bubbles to steer light in optical switches. I’m sure that only a few industry old timers will remember talk of these. There was no mention of the key technology at the heart of modern Wavelength Selective Switches, in fact no mention of wavelength selective switches nor ROADMs at all!

It is true that some of the foundational aspects of fibre optics and optical networking change relatively slowly, and these aspects are covered on OTT’s foundation level course, the Certified Optical Network Associate (C**A) course. But at the leading edge of optical networking a lot has changed in 20 years! If you compare that other ‘advanced’ course with OTT’s really advanced Certified Optical Networking Engineer course, you will find hardly any overlap. All of the latest developments are on OTT’s CONE course and none of them are on that other course.

When it comes to the question of ‘What makes a good training course?’, expectations have also moved on in the last 20 years. On the course programme, look out for clear objectives that state what you will be able to do with your learning, look for exercises and case studies that apply the learning in context. Also, of course, certification is important and should be based on a thorough assessment of your ability to put into practice what you have learned. So, for example, on OTT ‘s optical networking certifications you will design optical networking solutions to meet the specified objectives of the assignments, as well as passing an exam to make sure you have taken on board the key concepts.

If you see a course programme that consists of nothing but long lists of jargon in bullet points, then alarm bells should start ringing!

But perhaps the most scandalous aspect of that other course was that despite the very obvious deficiencies they were still charging top dollar prices, what a rip-off!

OTT’s Optical networking certifications are focused on how to apply modern optical networking technology to solve the challenges facing network operators and hyperscalers, today and in the coming years:
• Increasing capacity
• Extending reach
• increasing flexibility
• Controlling latency
• Going open and interoperable
• Providing quality of service.. and all of this while keeping costs under control and reducing electrical power consumption so that the Internet doesn’t cost the Earth…

Please get in touch for details of OTT’s Certification programmes, available from our network of licenced training delivery partners around the world.
