TODAY'S FEATURED POETRY ... commemorating the one year anniversary of the death of QUEEN ELIZABETH II - 21st April 1926 - 8th September 2022.

IN HER DEARLY DEPARTED FOOTSTEPS
By Mark Andrew Heathcote (ENGLAND)

Suffused in farewell mists by the river Dee,
the Queen has ventured out to walk the snowfields
alone, far beyond Balmoral Castle one last time,
one last morra, and there shortly after the next
she'll-depart-these her well-loved Scottish glens
like so many a rare red bushy-tailed squirrel.
And the world that she cheered and warmed
many centuries hence shall be hushed - hushed
into a shocked silence, petrified as she leaves
the stone steps of her throne, sullen and icy cold.

As her footsteps, leave-us-all, solemnly-behind
we see the rabble and the gentry huntsman bowing
their-lowly-heads in kind. Our noble Queen
has trodden a path that has never frozen,
wavered or forked her pristine footprints
never stumbled, never soiled stained-the-ground
they a tightrope walked. They melt away still pristine
from-us-now one and all. As tears like suspended-
tiaras earnestly heartfelt fall. Her hounds are
heard-baying - howling frantically in the grand hall.

Now her walking cane isn't needed anymore
Now that the mantle of her crown
courts another-rightful son and heir.

Now she waves goodbye with a regal wave of
her royal hand. And all her subject's remarks
she-ruled-our-land with grace and dignity
that no other could likewise command.
Your Majesty, we loved you dearly and would all
take an oath on the stand and there proclaim
she loved all her people, all her subjects
in equal proportions, living in however many distant lands.
God, Save the Queen and God-guides-all-of-mankind,
humankind in her dearly departed footsteps.

END
Mark is adult learning difficulties support worker. He has poems published in journals, magazines, and anthologies - both online and in print - and is the author of two books of poems.

TODAY'S FEATURED POEM ...

RITE OF PASSAGE
By Jeanine Stevens (USA)

According to a master gardener, my earth
needs mulch, compost. Yet every season
they disappear, clay eating away.
I’m left with fudge-like density.
The ancients say “Clay made of nutrients,
we are made of clay.”

I admire a recent photograph,
men in Levis, cowboy shirts and hats,
women in long dresses,
a four-day ceremony to celebrate
a young Apache woman’s first me**es.
She sits serious on layers of colorful blankets,
red, orange and blue. Her white dress
and necklaces disappear
under a thick layer of ochre-colored clay.
Hair already stiff, she will be reincarnated
as White Painted Woman,
a new mother of the tribe, as she emerges
out of this richness, stronger.

Almost fourteen, my turn came
on a bus trip from the Valley to Redondo Beach,
by way of Los Angeles—two transfers.
At the five and dime where my aunt works,
she quietly hands me supplies.
Back home, no mention, except,
“That’s a shame.” Anemic, low on iron,
I thought at least I would receive my favorite
chocolate layer cake, marshmallow
frosting, an entire jar
of maraschinos cherries on top.

END
Jeanine studied poetry at U.C. Davis, earned her M.A., has a doctorate in Education, and is Professor Emerita at American River College. She is also a collage artist and has exhibited her work in various art galleries.

TODAY'S FEATURED POEM ...

WHEN I DIE
By Christopher Okemwa (KENYA)

When I die
Do not hold back those tears
Let them flow freely
To wet your youthful face
Like rain water

When I die
Wriggle on the dusty ground
And beat the dry soil with your bare hands
Shout and scream
Remember - you are bereaved!
Tear your clothes in anguish
Uproot your hair in agony
Bite your skin
Let blood ooze out

When I am no more
Sit late under the moonlight
And beat the drums
Pluck the obokano strings
Blow the family horn
Let people run down from the hillside
Hurry up from the valleys
Let them moan with you
And help with the misfortunes

When I breathe no more
Mourn like a really African woman
Destroy the food crops
Cut down the banana plants
Uproot the maize plants
Destroy the sugar canes
Dismantle them in fury

Like a true African woman
Run through the market place
Shouting my name
My father’s name
My grandfather’s name
The entire family lineage
Let them know your tribulations
Clutch their cheeks in sympathy
Gape in amazement

After the day of the amatati
Let the in-laws and relatives come in
With spears, shields, ekeboye, ekegwora
Chase away the spirits of death
Dwelling in our home

Let them dress the cows in egwagwa
Drive them to the grave site
As they bellow a dirge
Let them lock horns in grief
As they perform eburu dance

Once the eburu day is finished
Let the owls gather in the evening
On the hedgerows
To hoot a desolate orchestra
Let mysterious black cats assemble
At the door-step of our house
With a mixture of doleful purrs

END

THE EMBRACE
By Hussein Habasch (KURDISTAN/GERMANY)
Translated by Muna Zinati

When the two lovers heard
The fighter planes roar,
They embraced each other.
When the sound approached more,
They embraced each other more.
When the bombing and destruction began,
They embraced each other tightly.
Now they stand in an embrace in eternity.

Hussein is a poet from Kurdistan, currently living Germany. His poems have been translated and published internationally.

TODAY'S FEATURED POEM ...

WITHOUT CONDEMNATION
By Linda M. Crate (USA)

my mother told me twice
i better not be a le***an,
and i am not;
but i am also not straight

i face the adversity of
being honest and authentic
in my truth and not wanting
to push away everyone
i love

because i know not everyone
will understand my rainbow heart -

i hate standing in the closet
with one foot in and one foot out,

but i don't know how else to
remain safe;
and i don't know why people
judge others for things they cannot control -

i remember the openly gay boy who was
bullied mercilessly on my bus until he thought
only death was the way to take,
it haunts me to know that people will hate you
simply in the name of their religion and morals
but will act as if you're the terrible one
just for wanting to exist in the world without
condemnation or fear.

END
Linda's works have been published in numerous magazines and anthologies, both online and in print. She is the author of six poetry chapbooks, a novel, and two full-length poetry collections.

TODAY'S FEATURED POEM ...

FRIENDSHIP
Jyotirmaya Thakur (ENGLAND / INDIA)

Let's sow seeds of friendship light,
With a friendly smile, cheerful vibes,
A friendly word greeting slides,
A warm hug with healing lights.

If one person spreads smile a day,
Leading blind when crossing his way,
Holding an elder person on a busy street,
Picking up groceries for the weak.

If one person picks up abandoned,
Gave alms to beggars on roadside,
Gave poorly shelter and some food,
comfort the needy in rain or sunshine.

If friendly smiles could touch many hearts,
A penny or two to struggling musical arts,
If every person walked the extra mile,
And sowed seeds of friendship on every path.

END
Jyotirmaya started writing when she was just seven years-old, and is now an internationally renowned poet and writer of twenty-five books She has won numerous awards, for both her literature and humanitarian efforts.
