The Tapeworm

It’s really sad to hear of Graham Dowdall's passing; such a generous, sweet soul. Apart from releasing a cassette on The Tapeworm label in 2014, I used to bump into him in Sainsbury's in Balham where we’d shoot the breeze as the shoppers whirled around us. He was always so engaging and curious about what we were up to. Such a history, what a guy. We’ll miss you. [Mike Harding, Touch]

Jay Glass Dubs’ first two tapes for The Tapeworm are now available digitally for the first time. 2017’s “Dislocated Folklore” consists of two 30 minute long tracks that incorporate mainly stretched-out 0’03” sample recordings of 90s Ragga 12” single intros combined with and recordings of a Quran recitation from a Turkish TV channel. “Two Devotional Songs For Spacemen 3 In The Style Of Love Inc.”, first released in 2019, was created for The Tapeworm’s 10th anniversary show.

Due to popular demand, MICROCORPS’ recent tape, “Macrocorpse – 2021-2024”, is also now available digitally.

TTW #167 is “Inside Out of Chaos” by Runar Magnusson, an Icelandic/Danish sound artist and musician, currently based in Austria. With a masters degree in Electronic Music Composition from The Royal Academy of Music, Aarhus, Denmark, he is inspired by the sounds of nature, noise, and meditation. Magnusson specialises in atmospheric disturbances through minimalist compositions. A sly humour cuts through the dark hues of his works.

TTW #168 is “Macrocorpse – 2021-2024” by MICROCORPS, Alexander Tucker’s mutant techno alter ego, presents “Macrocorpse – 2021-2024”, a collection of eight tracks that stray into a mutated space where techno-based composition inhabits the same zone as microsound time scales, drone and noise.

Just when you thought it was safe to back into the Spook House for the Late-Night Monster Show, The Howling return with their latest single. This digital release offers radical new takes on two tracks taken from their recent Wormhole album ‘Incredible Night Creatures of the Midway’.

https://the-tapeworm.bandcamp.com/album/the-skydivers

Track A is a video version of ‘The Skydivers’, The Howling’s deadpan exposition on a spectacularly lacklustre movie melodrama, backed by the throbbing of a customised street rod engine. Combining the original studio version of the track with visuals specially prepared with the expert assistance of Executive Producer Lori E. Allen, ‘The Skydivers’ offers all the highs and lows of this moody soap opera in which people either fall in love or throw themselves out of planes.

Track B is a pounding live version of another track taken from The Howling’s ‘Incredible Night Creatures of the Midway’ release. ‘The Picture of A Picture of Dorian Gray’ pays tribute to a 1970s Italian soft-core p**n adaptation of Oscar Wilde’s classic novel. Using keywords scraped from the IMDB entry for the movie, The Howling reconstructs Wilde’s narrative as a fragmented sequence of plot points, themes and images. This recording was made in the teeth of severe technical problems at the Horse Hospital in London on 3 November 2023 and turned out to be greatly enhanced by them. This live version also includes a spoken-word introduction not featured on the album.

The Tapeworm’s first tape was 2009’s “Spool” by the much-missed Philip Jeck. To honour his memory, Jay Glass Dubs unwinds “Spool” in a new hour-long composition using Jeck’s tape as his primary sound source. “Respooled” is available to preorder now, with a special rose-coloured variant on sale exclusively at Stellage in Athens.

Franz Kirmann appears under his Dj Salinger alias to deliver “Voyage Voyage Voyage”, a “subjective mixtape” celebrating 80s French pop, where the tracks are not played as-is but presented as they are felt by the artist. Imagine Fennesz or My Bloody Valentine playing Laurent Voulzy covers and you’re almost there… “Loveless non, Desireless oui!”.

London! This Friday, 23 June, at The Horse Hospital in London's fashionable Bloomsbury, The Tapeworm and Through The Looking Glasses presents “Midsummer Memorex”

In conversation and in performance: Simon Fisher Turner. In sound and vision: Alexander Tucker. Their live debut: Stonecirclesampler. On the big screen: Stanley Schtinter’s Journey to Avebury. All hosted by Travis Elborough.

Tickets: https://www.thehorsehospital.com/events/midsomer-memorex

Simon Fisher Turner is renowned for his film soundtrack work which began in collaboration with Derek Jarman, for whom he scored many feature films, from Caravaggio (1986) through to Jarman’s final work Blue (1993). Caravaggio began a long relationship with the BFI, with Fisher Turner composing the score for restorations of three silent films, Un chant d’amour (dir. Jean Genet, 1950), The Great White Silence (dir. Herbert Ponting, 1924), and The Epic of Everest (dir. Captain John Noel, 1924), for which he won a prestigious Ivor Novello Award. His most recent work is the live score for Blue Now (2023), in collaboration with Russell Tovey, Travis Alabanza and Neil Bartlett. Simon will also be in conversation with Travis Elborough.

Alexander Tucker is a multidisciplinary artist working across music, assemblage, painting, comics, collage, sculpture, film and live performance. Formally trained as a painter at the Slade School of Fine Art, Tucker went onto produce a series of critically acclaimed solo albums for renowned Chicago based record label Thrill Jockey and All Tomorrow’s Parties before recording as MICROCORPS for Alter Records. He also has a number of collaborative projects including avant-pop, electronic duo Grumbling Fur (with Daniel O'Sullivan); the Grumbling Fur Time Machine Orchestra, who have improvised with Charlemagne Palestine, Mark Titchner and Neil Campbell, and tape loop radiophonic project Imbogodom (with Daniel Beban), recorded at BBC Bush House. 2023 saw the release of Fifth Continent (Subtext), a posthumous collaboration with the late Keith Collins who was Derek Jarman’s partner and collaborator for the last seven years of his life. Recorded in Jarman’s Prospect Cottage on Dungeness, Kent and using Collins recorded archive of spoken word pieces and environmental recordings. Accompanying the LP is the publication Fifth Quarter: Derek Jarman, Keith Collins and Dungeness, an anthology of new writing, artworks and photography edited by Tucker.

Stonecirclesampler is the solo project of London based electronic musician Luke J Murray, fusing a sound of post ice age ambient electronics that conjure images of sub-zero noir wastelands full of rain soaked stone circles and megalithic despair. Recent projects include the albums The Drift (Industrial Coast) and Deep Blue Aquatic Creatures (The Tapeworm). Luke is also one third of the drone trio NONEXISTENT with Alexander Tucker and previous Memorex performer Opal X. The show at The Horse Hospital will be the first ever live performance of the Stonecirclesampler project.

Stanley Schtinter’s 2021 film Journey to Avebury is a shot-for-shot iPhone recreation of Derek Jarman’s 1971 incidental 8mm film, A Journey to Avebury, made with James Norton. In 1971, Jarman took an 8mm camera to the ancient landscape of Avebury, filming henges and standing stones as he walked. In 2021, fifty years after Jarman’s trip and during a global pandemic, Schtinter attempted to replicate the journey, re-shooting the film as closely as possible with an iPhone. At once a critique of capitalism’s culture of reproduction; an indictment of its canonisations; and an attempt to subvert the insistence of a dystopian ‘present’ for an experience of place without the constraints of time.

On 4 November, The Tapeworm presents MEMOREX at The Horse Hospital – an evening of misremembering. Words, pictures, music and magnetic reels with The Pathfinders, Cathi Unsworth and Opal X, hosted by Travis Elborough

https://www.thehorsehospital.com/events/tapeworm

In conversation and alive: The Pathfinders’ Roger Cleghorn and Malcolm Garrett. In her own words: Cathi Unsworth. Into the future: Opal X.

Hosted by Travis Elborough

The Pathfinders’ Roger Cleghorn and Malcolm Garrett met in the late 70s when studying art and design at Manchester Polytechnic. Moving to London they shared a flat on the 15th floor of a tower block in the Isle of Dogs. Here they recorded a series of experiments, captured directly on a reel-to-reel tape recorder. The Pathfinders could hardly be described as being musicians who jammed together and with almost 40 years having elapsed since recording, memories are sketchy with regard to who made what noise where. Travis Elborough will interview Cleghorn and Garrett to see what can be recalled and The Pathfinders will share unheard archive material in their live debut.

Cathi Unsworth’s Johnny Remember Me was originally commissioned by Brighton's Literary Loogster Jay Clifton for his Peripheral Vision series of live screen talks, in which authors were requested to pick a movie and spin off a character or situation from the film into an original short story. Cathi writes:

“I have always been somewhat obsessed with the John Leyton song, and while researching the life and times of its producer and co-writer Joe Meek for Bad Penny Blues, had pause to wonder why it was that he ended up with Johnny Kidd's band as The Tornados – but without Johnny. The song being so evocative of curses and ghosts, I wove a little urban myth of my own.“

To close the evening, to shoot us into the future: a live performance by Opal X.

Opal X is the latest project of London based electronic musician Astrud Steehouder, fusing a sound that is equally inspired by early Mute, Sähkö & American noise metal. Recent projects include the Twister album for The Tapeworm described by Boomkat as "a sort of dank hypnagogic sound mulched from zonked electronics, gynoid vox and graveyard atmospheres" & as one third of the NONEXISTENT drone project released by legendary UK industrial label Downwards in 2020. The show at The Horse Hospital will be the London live debut of the Opal X project and promises to engulf the evening in a crushing cold wave of Goth ASMR Hardcore.

To echo Mike and Jon's words – Philip Jeck was an amazing individual and a bringer of such joy. Will miss him greatly. RIP.

Philip Jeck (1952-2022)

Jon and Mike are deeply saddened to tell you that Philip Jeck died peacefully on Friday after a short illness. A remarkable man and a wonderful artist, he has been one of the kingpins of our work for 30 years. But with Philip it was never just the work, more the love, the spirit and the dedication. He touched so many with his wit, his zest for life and his wisdom. We will miss him terribly and our love goes out to Mary and Louis.

Four new tapes from The Tapeworm are now on sale, all shipping Friday 3 December.

Evan Lindorff-Ellery is a visual and sound artist based in Kingston, New York, and co-owner of Notice Recordings. “No Water Recordings 2011” was created using a hydrophone against a bridge, above water, and a contact mike and ceramic insulator against a brick.

Bill Thompson’s “Black Earth Tongue” is based on material composed when working with the contemporary dance group In the Making for the Edinburgh Fringe Festival 2016.

“Destroy All Monsters” by acclaimed writer and ‘pop culture alchemist’ Ken Hollings was made in 2001 in the weeks before September 11 and constitutes a unique historical document. They are spoken-word adaptations of selected scenes taken from the book of the same name.

Opal X’s “Twister” is ‘Goth ASMR Hardcore’…

“Jungle Shuffle” by Jay Glass Dubs x Laura Agnusdei was named Bleep’s single of the week.

19/11/2021

Super exciting being "EP of the Day" on Bleep.com with our vinyl Jay Glass Dubs x Laura Agnusdei out on The Tapeworm

"Italian saxophonist Laura Agnusdei’s textural delicacy Laurisilva from 2019 probed the corners of an imagined forest soundscape, with each electronic pulse imagined as a blossoming organism in an eco-system. Now Jay Glass Dubs steps behind the controls to give us two dub reworks of percussion and sax heavy ‘Jungle Shuffle’, one with hypnotic yet distant rhythms and one beatless. Always gestural, never rigid, the remixes stick to the mantra emblazoned on the green screen printed cover ‘To define is to kill. To suggest is to create."

Super grateful to Dimitris Papadatos for what he did with my track and to Philip Marshall and Mike to make this happen
