Continuing my series of posts about the contributing creators to Peter Hogan's Black Forests (which has now hit it's funding target) we turn to legendary British artist Steve Parkhouse.

Steve's comics career began in earnest in the late 1960s, when as a sub-editor at IPC Magazines he wrote hundreds of scripts for humour comics such as Whizzer and Chips, Cor! and Buster.
Going freelance in the early seventies he graduated to adventure and romance stories which included Doctor Who for Marvel UK and various other series for 2000AD. (I discovered Steve's work on early Zoids strips in the mid 80's for Marvel UK and was instantly hooked to his work)

Dissatisfied with anthology formats he turned back to providing artwork for clients such as Penguin Books, Usborne, Hodder and Stoughton and a smattering of ad agencies and music labels.

In spite of being a graphic design graduate, he insists on drawing comics to this day, fervently hoping that some day he'll get it right.

Along with Peter he co created Resident Alien, so we are delighted that he is joining us on the roster for Black Forests.

I am going to do a series of posts introducing folks to the creators behind our new Black Forests book now funding on Kickstarter at: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/scratchcomics/peter-hogans-black-forests

First up has to be the main man behind it: Peter Hogan.

Before becoming a comics writer, Peter Hogan was asked by Pete Townshend to set up and run Townshend’s Magic Bus bookshop. After this, Hogan became an editor at Townshend’s company Eel Pie, where his remit was to publish books about music and popular culture. Following this he was a press officer for several record companies where he worked with numerous bands, including The Smiths and REM.

Hogan then took the logical step of becoming a journalist himself, writing about movies, comics and music for magazines like Melody Maker, Vox and Uncut before being recruited by the 2000AD group as an editor. This led to Hogan being tasked with creating a new anthology title, Revolver, and then editing a benefit comic for the charity Comic Relief alongside Neil Gaiman and Richard Curtis.

“A lot of people have said I’ve had an unusual career,” says Hogan today. “And I suppose that’s true … but there was never a plan. It was always words, though, and one thing sort of flowed into another. Looking back, it seems kind of inevitable that I’d eventually write comics myself.”

Hogan started by writing scripts for 2000AD, where most British comics creators learn their craft, and then Vertigo editor Alisa Kwitney commissioned him to write a Sandman spin-off story, which paired him with artist Steve Parkhouse for the first time. After this he was asked by Kwitney and Sandman creator Neil Gaiman to write more stories for The Dreaming and The Sandman Presents. “I wrote about half a dozen in all, which involved a good many transatlantic phone calls to Neil in the middle of the night. ”

One of my personal favourites of Peter's was his run on Alan Moore's Tom Strong with artist Chris Spouse and of course I am a huge Resident Alien fan :-)
