Paul Kenny is a master at finding beauty in the overlooked. His exquisitely detailed abstract images are made using objects he has found on beaches in Ireland, Scotland and north-east England – from copper wire and fragments of fishing rope to seaweed and other natural materials. These are then artfully arranged on glass plates (or other translucent material) and the final artwork is created using a flatbed scanner. It is a technique he has spent 50 years developing.

Many of Paul’s finest artworks are collected in his new book, Strandline (published by Kōzu Books) and in OP 311 he shares the ideas and inspiration behind his work with Tracy Calder. Don’t miss it!

With autumn in full swing, it’s the perfect time to give your landscape portfolio a boost. In our November issue (OP 311) Alan Ranger Photography shares his tips to help you do just that, through five inspiring project ideas.

One of his ideas explores the season’s striking colour contrasts. He suggests incorporating bold autumn colours, such as rich oranges, deep reds and golden yellows against neutral backgrounds like creams, greys and darker shades to create impactful images like the one shown here, taken at Batsford Arboretum, Gloucestershire.

Autumn mist is the holy grail for many landscape photographers, offering the potential for images with the wow factor. This atmospheric weather phenomenon is most like to occur the morning after a warm day and a cool, still night. So, look for high humidity – 95% or more – and a forecast of low wind speeds.

For more tips on predicting when and where to find it, as well as top advice on capturing arresting compositions, don’t miss Mark Bauer’s technique guide in OP 310.

Three top photographers have contributed their images to a new book raising money for Liverpool-based homelessness charity the Paper Cup Project.

Alexandra Wesche, Mali Davies and Mick Houghton were tasked with making a series of 20 images close to home over a three-month period. Thirty-six of these images were selected for the final book, which also includes words by author Jeff Young and a foreword by Frank Cottrell-Boyce. Entitled Home, the collection is designed to inspire photographers to look again at areas they might normally pass by.

The book is available in six purchasing options, from £20 (plus p&p). Find out more at homephotobook.co.uk

Julien Delaval’s meticulously crafted landscapes are among the highlights of OP 310. Only 26 years of age, the Belgian landscape photographer has already built a stunning portfolio of work that he describes as ‘photo paintings’. He chats to Nick Smith about his pursuit for perfection and the challenge of capturing something new.

He says, ‘If I had to describe my photographic approach, I would describe it as a quest for atmosphere, where darkness often meets bright light to achieve a fabulous complementarity.’

The inclusion of water is often the secret ingredient to stunning landscape images. In our latest issue (OP 309), Ross Hoddinott Photography looks at the many ways we can harness its rich potential, particularly as the seasons change.

He says: ‘Autumn colour and water provide a compelling double act capable of producing outstanding atmosphere, drama, flow, tranquility and mood – qualities that can elevate our landscape photographs.’
