Our latest issue (OP 309) includes a showcase of the inaugural Deer Photographer of the Year (DPOTY). This international competition celebrates ethical deer photography and acknowledges those who use their skills to capture breathtaking shots of these majestic animals.

Karol Waszkiewicz’s image of a red deer, shown here, scooped top prize in the Portraits category.

The 2025 edition of the competition has just opened for entries, with categories covering everything from portraits and behaviour to images of deer in their natural habitat and living alongside people. The judging panel includes regular OP contributor Laurie Campbell and fellow wildlife experts and photographers Neil McIntyre, Jochen Langbein and Mark Nicolaides.

Deer Photographer of the Year 2025 is open until 30 November. Register at dpoty.com and get two free entries.

The inclusion of water is often the secret ingredient to stunning landscape images. In our latest issue (OP 309), Ross Hoddinott Photography looks at the many ways we can harness its rich potential, particularly as the seasons change.

He says: ‘Autumn colour and water provide a compelling double act capable of producing outstanding atmosphere, drama, flow, tranquility and mood – qualities that can elevate our landscape photographs.’

In our latest issue (OP 308) Tesni Ward shares her tips for photographing the wildlife of the Peak District during the summer months. Red grouse are among region’s star species, and August is the peak time for capturing shots of them against a sea of pinks and purples as the heather blooms.

The impressionistic woodland images of Graham Macfarlane Photography are among the highlights of our August issue (OP 309). His Woodland Wonders series explores the play of light on the leaves of trees such as beeches, sycamores, hawthorns, lime and cherry, while Forest Fantasies sets hanging branches against soft-focus trunk textures. All the images were taken in central Scotland.

Describing his relatively recent creative shift away from more traditional landscapes, Graham says: ‘It all came out of Covid because suddenly you were trapped. You couldn’t go up to Glencoe for the day. I just immersed myself in woodland and long dog walks. I surrounded myself with nature. That’s where it all came from.’

If you want to take your seascapes to the next level, look no further than Edd Allen’s technique guide in the latest issue (OP 309). Across six pages he shares his hard-earned advice on how to (safely) capture epic images at the coast ¬– from planning your shoot and understanding the tides to using filters and capturing ferocious waves during storms.

‘There are no limits to your creativity when down by the sea,’ says Edd. ‘And it never fails to get the adrenaline pumping, with very type of weather providing a new photographic opportunity; whether it be dark rain clouds looming overhead, the tide rushing over your tripod legs or gale-force winds hurling the water into seawalls.’

The winners of the 10th edition of The Scottish Landscape Photographer of the Year have been announced, with Edinburgh based Ian Bowie Photography scooping the top award. His winning portfolio includes an atmospheric image of boats at Loch Ruskie in the Trossachs, a breathtaking mountain vista from Beinn Tulaichean and a subtle coastal shot capturing a wave breaking over a rocky beach on the north Fife coast.

This year’s awards attracted 4,000 entries from the UK and overseas. The winners include: Anne Berger, who came top in the individual landscape category with a stunning winter image of Ben Loyal; Dean Allen for his dramatic shot of a double rainbow near Clashnessie; David Queenan with a misty image of the Queensferry Crossing; and Jane Lee for her painterly beach scene taken at Luskentyre.

The winning images will be showcased in a limited-edition book, available via the competition’s website. There will also be an exhibition at the St James Quarter Edinburgh and at some smaller galleries in the Scottish Highlands later in the year.

Photographs celebrating one of the UK’s most spectacular sections of coastline are on display at London’s Paddington Station until the end of the month.

The images, from the South West Coast Path Photographer of the Year competition, highlight the diversity, beauty, wildlife, heritage and seasonality on and around the 630-mile trail, which spans four counties, from Minehead in Somerset to Poole in Dorset.

The exhibition runs from 3-30 July, and after its stint at Paddington Station it will head to Plymouth, where the South West Coast Path Association is based.

Work by landscape maestro Joe Cornish is currently on show at Gallery Photiq in Leamington Spa. The two dozen photographic prints, many of which were taken recently and have never been exhibited before, explore some of the wilder corners of the UK; places that exemplify nature’s raw beauty and resilience.

Cornish writes in his artist statement: ‘As the years have passed and our environmental discourse has grown more urgent, my focus has become the marginal but still beautiful landscapes that retain a spirit of wildness about them. On beach and headland, in woodland, on moor and mountain – where birds and wild animals can thrive – I find solace, a sense of renewal, and hope for the future.’

The exhibition, entitled Wild Remains, runs until 27 July. An artist reception and book signing will take place at the gallery on 20 July.

There are just a few days left to enter this year’s Mangrove Photography Awards, a competition dedicated to showcasing the beauty, diversity and fragility of the world’s mangrove forests.

Run by global charity the Mangrove Action Project, the competition highlights the importance of mangroves – which have amazing carbon-storing capabilities – and the threats they face, as well as the coastal communities that depend on them.

The competition categories are: Wildlife, People, Landscape, Threats and Underwater, as well as a multiple image category.

Entry is free and the closing date is 19 May. The winners will be announced on 26 July to celebrate World Mangrove Day.

Shown here is Soham Bhattacharyya’s stunning image, The Finest Flower of the Mangrove, which won last year’s grand title of Mangrove Photographer of the Year 2023.

Catherine Régnier’s poetic nature pictures in OP 305 are sure to bring some springtime joy to your day. The French photographer, who is the star of this month’s Portfolio feature, has only been creating nature images for a few years and yet has already won several awards for her work – and it’s not hard to see why.

She says: ‘I hope that through my photographic eye, people will become more sensitive to the microcosms that surround us, to their beauty but also to their fragility.’

‘On the coast of Portnockie in Scotland, Bow Fiddle Rock is a neat geological trick with huge appeal to the landscape photographer. And it’s a location Mik Dogherty has nailed with his characteristic no-frills approach to showing the landscape how it is and at its best, with perhaps a few flourishes of his own’ – Nick Smith

Don’t miss our interview with Mik Dogherty Photography in the latest issue (OP 305). One of the most successful photographers on today’s outdoor photography competition scene, his accolades include being named British Landscape Photographer of the Year in 2023.

‘I’m looking for something that catches my eye. That’s the key to it’, says Mik. Then you take the picture and ask if it’s good enough.’
