Summer reading alert!

Check out this new National Archives blog, featuring our Artistic Director Fin Kennedy and writer Mel Pennant, discussing how audio drama can bring the past to life.

This is the first of three articles coming out this summer, celebrating Applied Stories' long-standing collaboration with The National Archives, ahead of launching our latest double bill, Being and not Being, marking 2025's 80th anniversary of the end of World War Two.

Next in the series features the writers of that double bill, Sharmila Chauhan and Ery Nzaramba...

We don't know who this guy is. But we do know it was taken between 1910-20 at the studio of Fred Petersen at 232 Bute Street, Cardiff. We suspect it might be of Fred Petersen himself.

Fred's extraordinary collection of (mostly) anonymous sitters was donated to Glamorgan Archives / Archifau Morgannwg in the 1970s with little contextual detail. Numerous public appeals over the years have yielded nothing.

Last year, Glamorgan Archives and The National Archives commissioned Applied Stories to imagine some audio minidramas inspired by these pictures. We in turn commissioned writers Kyle Lima and Danielle Fahiya to do their thing. They brought Fred back to life, voiced by the brilliant Kieron Self.

'From May to Etta, with Love' is the amazing result! Join us on Weds 15 May 4-6.30pm at Glamorgan Archives for the launch of a unique audio photo exhibition.

Bring headphones! 🎧

Have we told you about our international schools letter writing project for Mulberry Schools Trust, Letters to Our Daughters?

We've got over 30 schools signed up to take part in this celebration of lyrical letter writing for girls aged 11-19.

Applied Stories has commissioned a team of inspiring female writers to make a series of videos for playing to classes of students, and a suite of original creative exercises.

Participating writers include Sharmila Chauhan, Mel Pennant, Yusra Warsama and Erinn Dhesi.

Super proud to be working with all of them!

A long list of 60 young people's letters will be published in a new volume in the autumn, with a shortlist of 8 supported to perform their letters live at Mulberry's Global Girl Leading conference at the QE2 conference centre in central London in October.

If you know a school, especially a girls' school, who might like to take part, there's still (just!) time to sign up!

More info at www.letterstoourdaughters.world

Attention Cardiffians!

Applied Stories' first in-person event of the year is taking place next month, on Weds 15 May from 4pm-6.30pm at Glamorgan Archives, Cardiff.

Join us for the launch of a unique audio photography exhibition, From May to the Future, a project we've been working on for over a year with the brilliant Danielle Fahiya and Kyle Lima.

Both writers were commissioned to choose three photos each from a historic c.1910 photo collection of Cardiff families, from one of the first portrait studios in the UK, but whose subjects are lost to history. Through the magic of audio drama we've brought them to life and can now take audiences back to the moment the photo was taken.

All the young people's parts were recorded with local families, who were then offered their own photo shoot and audio interview, with these files joining their historical counterparts and officially archived for posterity.

Come and view large canvas prints of these gorgeous images, hear their audio minidramas, plus a live Q&A with the creative team, historians and families behind the project.

Tickets are free but do need to be booked via the link below.

Looking forward to this one! Hope to see some of you there.

Also fascinating to hear about all the other creative engagement work going on at archives around the country. Kudos to for commissioning an entire graphic novel and VR experience!
