10-80% in less than 10 minutes is the near-term dream!

https://topcharger.co.uk/how-fast-can-ev-charging-get/

There is no theoretical ceiling to how fast EV charging can get, but a sub-10-minute to 80% time is a realistic goal.

How fast is a 7kW charger? Is it enough for an EV?

https://topcharger.co.uk/how-fast-is-a-7kw-charger/

For most people, a 7kW charger is enough. 7kW chargers add up to 25-miles of range per hour. 11kW chargers are 57% faster but need a 3-phase power supply.

How much does your electric bill go up with an EV?

- It depends on how often you charge
- If you don’t charge at home, your bill won’t go up!
- Some energy suppliers offer super-low energy rates for EV drivers, so your monthly energy bill will go up less than 5%
- At 5p/kWh on an EV tariff, topping up with 75kWh costs just £3.75
- If you have a standard energy tariff, a 5-10% increase is possible
- Calculate charging costs by multiplying power draw (kWh) by your kWh tariff rate
- A 5% increase translates to an extra £4.00 per month on an £80 bill
- Even with the electricity bill increase, you will save a small fortune on petrol/diesel

https://topcharger.co.uk/how-much-does-your-electric-bill-go-up-with-an-ev/

With an EV tariff, charging at home will increase your electric bill by 5% per month on average. This means an £80 bill will increase to £84 per month.

What is a dumb EV charger? Is it all you need? ⚡⚡

A dumb EV charger is nothing more than a jacked-up power outlet with a Type 1 or Type 2 connector. Dumb chargers are usually untethered, acting as a simple power socket when you plug your car in.

As the name implies, ‘dumb’ chargers don’t connect to an app. They are pure plug and play devices. However, as with a 3-pin socket, your EV will still collect and crunch basic data from charging sessions like charge time and kWh added.

Dumb charger advantages
Dumb chargers charge at speeds up to 7.4kW on single-phase, adding up to 30-miles of range per hour, so they are just as fast as smart chargers.

For some people, a dumb EV charger is all that is needed for EV ownership. If all you want to do is plug in and charge, a dumb charger will suit you fine.

What is an Energy Storage System for EVs? ⚡⚡

With the Government announcing some electric hubs on motorways will make use of Energy Storage Systems, you might be wondering what the heck one is.

An Energy Storage System (ESS) is a giant battery pack connected to the grid that stores a tremendous amount of energy for use at a later time.

ESSs store at least several megawatt-hours of energy (there are 1,000kWhs in 1MWh). An ESS can supply power on-demand for EV charging as a standalone power source and supplementary to the grid.

ESSs are crucial for electromobility (or e-Mobility), creating connected infrastructures that enable the electric propulsion of vehicles and fleets.

The Best EV Chargers With RFID ⚡⚡

RFID uses electromagnetic fields to identify RFID tags. EV chargers with RFID have an RFID reader that can identify the tags in RFID cards, letting you start and stop charging sessions and lock and unlock the charger with a scan of your card.

RFID stands for radio-frequency identification and it is anything but new technology. It was invented in 1948 by scientist Harry Stockman, although the first RFID key card was patented in 1973 by inventor Charles Walton.

Despite the convenience of RFID cards for home charging, very few home EV chargers have RFID. This is because most people prefer using their smartphones to control their chargers and schedule charge times.

However, RFID is undoubtedly nice to have. If you want an EV charger with RFID, we’ve listed the best chargers available below.

Let’s jump in!

Quick list
Best overall: Sync EV
Second best: ICS W7C
Third best: Project EV Pro Earth

Can I get 3-phase power at home? We asked an electrician ⚡⚡

The short answer is yes, you can get 3-phase power at home. Electricians can handle the electrical work but they are not allowed to change the supply, which must be done by the distribution network operator (DNO).

The extent of electrical modifications required to deliver three-phase power depends on the configuration of your property.

Most houses in the UK have a single-phase power supply, which is sufficient to power a 7.4kW EV charger but nothing more.

If you want an 11kW charger for an EV, you must upgrade to a 3-phase power supply, which requires modifications to your electrical installation.

The answer is yes, you can get three-phase power at home. We asked an electrician about the work involved and the cost so you can decide if it's worth it.

What is an EV tariff? ⚡⚡

EV tariffs are special electricity tariffs for electric vehicle owners. These tariffs offer lower prices per kWh at certain times or when charging an EV, reverting to the standard tariff rate out of hours.

EV tariffs offer excellent value for money, letting you run your electric vehicle for peanuts. The price can be as low as 4.5p/kWh!

Running your EV for peanuts
Other than free supermarket chargers, charging your electric vehicle at home is the cheapest way to run it.

You could pay as little as 4.5p/kWh, which equates to just £2.25 for 50kWh. In theory, you could drive 800-miles per month or more for less than £15.

Here’s what you need to do it:

Smart charger that can schedule charge times and/or set kWh price caps
Charger-compatible EV tariff that gives you access to super-low electricity prices
How much does your electricity bill go up with an EV? The average is around 5% if you have an EV tariff, but your increase might be lower.
