Almost £35 million paid out in business grants to Northampton businesses
Northampton Borough Council paid almost £35 million in government grant funding to businesses impacted by the coronavirus outbreak.
Since the Government announced the grant schemes providing financial assistance to coronavirus-gripped businesses, Northampton Borough Council has supported more than 2,900 businesses with payments exceeding £34,875 million.
The grant payments were administered through three schemes: the Small Business Grant Fund, the Retail, Hospitality and Leisure Grant Fund for businesses with rateable value of up to £15,000 or up to £51,000 and the Discretionary Fund.
The Council has now paid out its final Discretionary grants allocating over £1.7 million worth of Discretionary grant funding to 259 eligible businesses that have been impacted by COVID-19 but were not eligible under the Small Business Grant Funding or the Retail, Hospitality and Leisure schemes.
Cllr Tim Hadland, Cabinet member for regeneration and enterprise, said: “Northampton’s independent businesses make an enormous contribution to both the local economy and the unique character of our town centre this is why it’s vital that we do everything we can to support our local businesses so they can get through these unprecedented times.
“We are in this together and only with the support of local people, we will be able to come out of this pandemic stronger, wiser and prouder of our local businesses and heroes who supported our residents throughout the pandemic.
“I want to thank our businesses across town for their efforts in making their premises Covid-secure to keep their workers and customers safe and I encourage customers to play their part, behave responsibly and respect social-distancing rules while enjoying our shop, pubs and restaurants.”

WORK COMPLETED ON RECTORY FARM COMMUNITY CENTRE RENOVATION WORK.
We have now finished work on the newly-extended and renovated Rectory Farm Community Centre.
It was originally configured in a way that was unable to meet demand from different community uses, with insufficient available space.
A new hall has been built which offers the addition space required, and internal facilities including the kitchen have been upgraded to improve usability and safety.
Additional security measures have also been installed to ensure the protection of children who attend the playschool group which meets there every day.
We funded the work, partially through money gained from an out-of-court settlement with Hawthorne Leisure which wished to be released from a community covenant on the nearby former Barn Owl pub which it converted into a Co-op supermarket.
After viewing the new facility last week Cllr James Hill, ward councillor for Rectory Farm, said: “I’m absolutely blown away by what I’ve seen today.
“It’s a fantastic new facility and for me personally it represents the culmination of four years worth of work which began when our pub, the Barn Owl, was originally designated to be closed and the campaign to try and save that pub.
“Unfortunately we didn’t manage to do that but what we did manage to do was get some funding from the developers towards this.
“This is a new fantastic facility which is going to go on and really benefit our community and people for many years to come.”
