This is just the start and part of large and long term body of work between both organisations. We must hold the Met to account and educate them around conscious bias, racism and how to respect the black British community

Monday 22 June marks the third Windrush Day, the 72nd anniversary of the SS Empire Windrush arriving at Tilbury Docks in Essex carrying the first Caribbean migrants.
Many of those who left sunnier climes were ex-servicemen who fought with the UK in the Second World War and had been invited to a bomb-damaged Britain to fill labour shortages.

Windrush Day was established as a celebration to honour the enormous contribution those who made that journey - and others who followed from elsewhere - have made to Britain.

The annual event was established in 2018 in the wake the Windrush scandal when many of those invited to Britain suddenly found themselves on the wrong side of immigration laws that, unbeknown to them, had changed around them.
Two years on from the inaugural Windrush Day, their fight for justice continues.

Charging two Atlanta police officers in Rayshard Brooks' death is only the first step in a long and uncertain road to a conviction, a family attorney said.

Former officer Garrett Rolfe faces felony murder and 10 other charges after he shot Brooks at a Wendy's drive-thru last week.
Prosecutors allege that he declared, "I got him" after firing the shots and he did not provide medical attention for two minutes and 12 seconds.

"That officer actually kicked Mr. Brooks while he laid on the ground, while he was there fighting for his life," Fulton County District Attorney Paul Howard said Wednesday.

The second officer, Devin Brosnan, faces an aggravated assault charge for allegedly standing on the prostrate Brooks' shoulders in the parking lot, which he denies.

Rolfe turned himself in Thursday afternoon, the Fulton County Sheriff's Department said. Rolfe, who is being held without bond, is expected to be in court on Friday at noon, according to emails sent to CNN from his attorney's spokesperson and the Fulton County Clerk's Office.

Brosnan turned himself in to the Fulton County Jail and was released Thursday afternoon.
Brosnan was released on a signature bond about an hour after presenting himself at the jail and will not be required to wear a GPS anklet, defense attorney Don Samuel said. The officer did not speak to reporters as he left the jail.

Brooks' widow said Wednesday the details of her husband's final moments left her appalled, and she had to leave the room more than once as Howard laid out the allegations, her attorney said.

"I don't know what I would have done if I would have seen it for myself. But I felt everything he felt just by hearing what he went through. And it hurt. It hurt really bad," Tomika Miller said.
Brooks' family members are preparing for his funeral. He leaves behind three daughters and a stepson.

Two major British firms have pledged to make payments to representatives of black people, as well as those of other minority ethnic backgrounds, as they seek to address their founders’ roles in the trans-Atlantic slave trade.
The pub chain and brewer Greene King and the insurance market Lloyd’s of London both revealed on Wednesday evening that they would be making the reparations.

The news, first reported by the Telegraph, comes as people outraged by the killing of an African American man in Minnesota, George Floyd, as well as continuing racial discrimination closer to home, demand that the UK recognise the ongoing legacy of the British empire’s extensive role in the enslavement of millions of Africans.

Records archived by researchers at University College London (UCL) show that one of Greene King’s founders, Benjamin Greene, held at least 231 human beings in slavery and became an enthusiastic supporter of the practice.

When slavery was abolished in the British empire in 1833, the government agreed to pay compensation; not to the enslaved people, but to the slaveholders.

The records show Greene was given the equivalent of about £500,000 at today’s rate when he surrendered rights to plantations in Montserrat and Saint Kitts.
He handed over control of his brewery to his son three years later and it was given its current name after a merger in 1887. Several of Greene’s descendants went on to hold prominent positions in British society, including a Bank of England governor, Conservative MP and BBC director general. “It is inexcusable that one of our founders profited from slavery and argued against its abolition in the 1800s,” said Nick Mackenzie, Greene King’s chief executive officer on Wednesday.
“We don’t have all the answers, so that is why we are taking time to listen and learn from all the voices, including our team members and charity partners as we strengthen our diversity and inclusion work.”

A black officer stepped in when a white cop had a suspect in a chokehold. She was fired and the city wants an investigation.

Officials in Buffalo, New York, want an investigation into the firing of a black police officer who intervened when a white colleague had a suspect in a chokehold.

The incident happened in November 2006. At the time, Officer Cariol Horne had served 19 of the 20 years needed to receive her pension, a spokesperson for Horne told CNN.

But Horne was fired for intervening and did not qualify for her pension, the city said.

"The message was sent that you don't cross that blue line and so some officers -- many officers don't," said Horne in an interview Tuesday with CNN's Brianna Keilar.

"I don't want any officer to go through what I have gone through," Horne continued. "I had five children and I lost everything but [the suspect] did not lose his life. So, if I have nothing else to live for in life, at least I can know that I did the right thing and that [he] still breathes."

To rectify what it perceives as a wrong, the Buffalo Common Council -- the city government's legislative branch -- has submitted a resolution to the New York Attorney General's Office to take a second look at the case.

The council references the case of George Floyd, who died after then-Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin's knee was pressed on his neck for eight minutes and 46 seconds on May 25. Chauvin has been fired and charged with second-degree murder. Three other officers on the scene were charged with aiding and abetting second-degree murder and aiding and abetting second-degree manslaughter.

NEWS: Marcus Rashford has thanked Boris Johnson "for U-turning" on a decision to scrap free school meals after the prime minister called him on the phone.

A spokesperson for the striker said he spoke with the PM this afternoon.

"They discussed the importance of making our vulnerable children a priority and Marcus thanked the prime minister for U-turning on a decision that could have been detrimental to the stability of families across the country," a statement said.

Speaking in Downing Street's daily coronavirus briefing, the PM claimed he had only become aware of the England player's campaign today. He said he had called to "congratulate him" on the campaign, adding: "I thank him for what he's done."

“Hey Siri, I’m getting pulled over.” 📱 This iPhone shortcut will pause any music that you’re playing, turn down the brightness of your phone, turn on the “Do Not Disturb” mode to block any incoming calls, open up your front-facing camera and start a video recording. It also sends a message to a predesignated contact, letting them know that you’re being pulled over and where your current location is. Once you stop the recording, it sends a copy of the video to a predesignated contact and gives you the option to send it to your iCloud or Dropbox. The shortcut was created in 2018 but is gaining traction now amid the widespread protests and anger over police brutality. (📸: sirtravelalot/Shutterstock).
