We’re like a knackered army working to make things better for each other and those who come after us. Childcare is infrastructure and under investment in it affects women, children and our economy. Happy Earth Day 🌍🌎🌏

Recommendation 37 of CEDAW (the Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Discrimination Against Women) discusses the gender related dimensions of climate change. Climate change leads to migration, displacement, and conflict, all of which has a huge impact on women and girls. It also disproportionately affects women and low-income families in developing countries. You can hear more about this on EPISODE 8 of the Legally Feminist Podcast.

It looks very much like Ossoff and Warnock have won in the Georgia runoffs, meaning the Democrats have taken control of the house, the senate, and the Presidency. And yes, it's pretty cool that Ossoff is the youngest senator since Biden, and it's even cooler that Warnock is Georgia's first black senator but...

...can we just take a minute to give, queen, hero, and legend a massive shout out?! This wouldn't have been possible without her incredible activism and unquestionable hard work to galvanise the vote and mitigate the effects of voter suppression.

Lovely followers.

2020 was not the one 🙅🏼‍♀️

In January we got the ball rolling with The Legally Feminist Podcast, an incredibly exciting undertaking which we all knew would take a lot of work. Work we were prepared to put in. We had episodes planned, scripts written..but, within weeks of recording episode 2, lockdown kicked in. Our plans to get a little catalogue of episodes together was quickly ruined as we had just one microphone & no idea how to record remotely. With thanks to some funding we were able to get some equipment together and start recording from our bedrooms. But, the whole year it's felt a bit like we've been trying to catch up, like time has been against us.

And you may think..Lockdown?! Loads of time! Well, researching, writing, recording & editing a podcast & running it's social media is a pretty hefty task. To add on top of working full time, studying a law degree, as well as general life (between us we've moved house, cancelled weddings, missed 30th birthdays, looked after a young child who couldn't go to nursery, given birth to a baby boy to name a few things) during a scary and unknown global pandemic... it has felt like a lot.

We live in a capitalist society. And that society tells us that our worth is rooted in our productivity. Don't get me wrong, all four of us are not afraid to work HARD. But burn out, stress, anxiety...these are real. Often we feel if we're not constantly doing and creating, then we aren't good enough. I'm telling you: this is wrong.

You may have noticed we've been quieter on here lately. And we've not put an episode out for a while. We promised a Christmas episode but it doesn't feel feasible right now.We are going to keep social media-ing (check out our giveaway) & bringing important things to your attention (look up right now!!) But we are pausing episodes until some point in the new year to take a bit of time to recuperate and process this abomination of a year!

We love you all for your support & hope that everyone one of you is taking good care of yourselves. And with that, it's time for us to practice what we preach..🙏❤️

We don't normally post twice in one day, but today is not just significant because it is . It is also Transgender Day of Remembrance. We must stand up for all our sisters, not only our cis-ters.

This year saw at least 350 transgender people worldwide, murdered as a result of transphobic violence - a 6% increase on 2019’s reported murders.

Today is Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDoR) and the last day of Transgender Awareness Week, a day dedicated to our trans siblings who’s time has been cut short because of the prejudice of others.

Here's what the data collected by Transrespect Versus Transphobia shows us…

350 trans and gender-diverse people were murdered, 6% more than in the TMM update 2019.

98% of those murdered globally were trans women or trans feminine people.

62% of murdered trans people whose occupation is known were s*x workers.

People of colour make up 79% of the 28 trans people murdered in the USA.

11 trans people murdered in Europe; 50% were migrants.

82% of all the murders registered happened in Central and South America; 43% in Brazil.

38% of the murders took place on the street and 22% in their own residence.

The average age of those murdered is 31 years old; the youngest being 15 years old.

No, Equal Pay Day is not a cause for celebration. From today women stop earning in comparison to men for the rest of 2020.

The Equal Pay Act was passed in 1970. It has since been repealed by the Equality Act 2010. So how are we still here? The have released a report which we urge you to read.

Kemi Akinola is a food waste pioneer, Labour councillor and runs two social enterprises and .enriched which have delivered emergency food parcels throughout the Covid crisis. For we wanted to profile a local hero who has made an impact, so got in touch with Kemi, who is the only female councillor of African Caribbean heritage in Wandsworth at the moment and proabaly one of a handful of black councillors since the beginning of time. “Last summer one of the Tory councillors, after being in chamber with me for a year and a half, asked me who I was at an event”

How did you get into community food projects?

“After initially training as an Architect, a road traffic collision resulted in quite a few years of disability and navigating unemployment benefits, during which time I experienced food insecurity and loneliness. Once back on my feet I was given the opportunity to run a regular event bringing people together using the medium of food it seemed obvious to run a community kitchen.”

How do you feel about the movement?

Food doesn't see gender, age or race - we eat it.
Boiling with rage that any adult would deny any child the right to eat.
We know that there is a problem with food in the household precisely because we have a free school meals system yet we deny access to food during a pandemic.

Do you feel that austerity & Covid disproportionately affects women?

Women are more likely to be lower paid and during school hols & lockdown.
Women are often cleaners, going into people’s homes, offices, hospitals – doing front line jobs and likely to get Covid.
There are more women in charity and food front-facing projects, so there are more women in the food arena who are feeling the strain where the government has rescinded their food distribution responsibilities.
I’m worried about the future - women will be most affected by Brexit as food prices will rise whilst Tory gov are likely to cut benefits despite the UK sliding into a recession.

The law I would change is to include Food as a Right in the Human Rights Act.
My female role-model is Tina Turner – that woman is pure resilience.
