Saltash United (2) v Clevedon Town (1)
By Tony Merrett
Match Report by Paul Davis

After almost scoring straight from the kick off when home keeper Jordan Duffy could only parry Mitch Osmond’s shot, with nobody on hand to take advantage, the Seasiders slipped to a narrow defeat at Saltash United.

Saltash were soon in the game themselves and Syd Camper cut out Jake Miller’s run and they grabbed the lead on 13 minutes with a long shot out of the blue from the lively Harrison Davis which flew over Luca Smith and dipped under the bar.

A brief flurry from Town saw Freddie King’s shot deflected and Osmond hit the top of the bar from the resulting corner, but Saltash began to show better control on the bone hard pitch and Smith saved twice from Davis and then produced a double block as Clevedon struggled to clear the ball.

Clear cut chances were difficult to come by at both ends but Ashes Henry Wilson then picked up a yellow card for a handball to stop Ethan Feltham. A good Saltash spell saw two dangerous crosses by Dave Barker create openings for Sam Hughes and Miller and Mike Smith shot tamely wide after Clevedon were caught in possession. Barker was then involved at the other end when he headed an Osmond free-kick away to Callum Eastwood whose header was saved by Duffy before Clevedon were relieved to see a Hughes shot deflected away for a corner and the half time score remained Ashes 1 Seasiders 0.

Hughes fired over at the start of the second period, but Clevedon began to exert more pressure and they deservedly equalised on 52 minutes when Osmond slid the ball through for Freddie King to shoot past the advancing Duffy. Sadly for Town Saltash were back in front 5 minutes later in somewhat fortunate circumstances. The home side made a double substitution which paid off immediately when Callum Merrin’s miss-hit shot fell to Charlie Elkington on the edge of the box and he placed the ball past Smith into the far corner of the net.

From the restart King put Feltham through, but the advancing Duffy hit Feltham with his clearance and the ball flew over the bar. Camper hit the top of the bar from a free-kick from just outside the box and a quick Elliot Nicholson throw found King cutting in only to be stopped at the expense of a corner.

Clevedon introduced Archie Ferris for Feltham and Henry Westlake for Alex Camm and Ferris started to cause problems for the Saltash back line and when Osmond and King combined to put Ferris through, he was checked by Saltash skipper Barker on the edge of the box and the referee immediately showed a red card to the Saltash skipper on 76 minutes. King took the free-kick which Duffy saved and stopped Camper’s follow-up.

Clevedon set about making the extra man count and Westlake was penalised for a foul and King hit the side netting, before with 3 minutes remaining Clevedon had strong shouts for a penalty when King was felled in the area, but nothing was given. Clevedon kept coming forward and Duffy punched clear as Ferris challenged and then did well to collect a Ferris through ball to King, but Clevedon ran out of time to find an equaliser and Saltash squeezed home winning 2-1.

A disappointed Manager Alex White said afterward “It was a hard defeat to take but not disastrous. The game could have gone either way and I thought a draw would have been a fair result.”

“There was still some rustiness out there, but overall, I was pleased with the performance and its’s how we bounce back against Cadbury Heath on Wednesday in what will be another tough game which is now important.”
