These mics found their way to me in 2005 after Radio New Zealand ordered them in the wrong finish. They were destined for installation in a theatre and therefore supposed to be black rather than nickel.
Well - I think they look fantastic, sound even better, and their loss is certainly my gain.

This is "Pania of the reef”, and she is a symbol of my home town of , . There is a 1.5 metre bronze statue of Pania on the Marine Parade in Napier's centre that I used to walk or cycle past nearly everyday. Everyone in Napier knows Pania.

In 2012, shortly after first arriving in the UK, I took a break from attending the curated to venture into the nearby “Cinque Port" town of Rye. Rummaging around in one of its famous antiques shops I unexpectedly found myself face to face with Pania, but she was nearly 12000 miles from home, and miniaturised in the pictured lamp form. She now sits happily in the control room of , watching over every session.

The plague on the statue in Napier reads: "An old Maori legend tells how Pania, lured by the siren voice of the sea people, swam out to meet them. When she endeavoured to return to her lover she was transformed into the reef which now lies beyond the Napier Breakwater”
