I Remember the Dame Well…Mainly as she had a laugh that reminded me of two cheese graters energetically fornicating in an iron bathtub. I looked out the open window at the Johnson Memorial, standing upright and resolute in the persistent rain. The clock on it said it was 3:15 in the a.m. and I figured, what-the-Hell, it was time to review the 14 case files scattered across my desk. They were from:
Daryl Wood Ge**er, Don Magin, James Donzella, J. T. Seate, S. B. Watson, Wil A. Emerson, Michael Bracken, Glenn Francis Faelnar, Michael Thomét, Jay Andrew Connor, Martin Zeigler, Michael J. Ciaraldi, Jeff Burt, and L.N. Hunter
I glanced back out across the skyline and wondered: Why is it always raining in Noir City? I got up and moved over to the chess board. I hadn’t see the cat in several hours, so I rearranged the pieces a little to give myself a bit of an advantage…
Just when you thought Private Eye investigations are a deadly serious business, these 14 skilful and talented writers start shaking the Funny Tree, and you’ll be amazed at what falls out. Because, in the spirit of the Murderous Ink Detective Agency motto:
You never know what you like until you investigate it.

COMING Tuesday 10th September

If Looks Could Kill, She Would Have Been An Uzi….
…Or more likely a shotgun. I mean, Lawd knows what those two ever saw in each other in the first place, and that’s a fact. Don’t believe me? Well, let me tell you about the time when….

But that’s how it usually starts, doesn’t it? Someone says something, which reminds someone else about…. And so the anecdotal avalanche begins.

This time there’s 19 storytellers:

Vinnie Hansen, V.S. Kemanis, David Krugler, Robert Jeschonek, Beverle Graves Myers, Kirk Landers, James Lee Proctor, Victor Kreuiter, K. Arlington Andrews, Michael Bracken, Kevin R. Tipple, William Flores, Robert Sumner, Jim Guigli, James Roth, Michael Zimecki, Sebastian Corbascio, Martin Zeigler, and John Bertram Fawet III

They're all gathered around the front counter of the Crimeucopia Shots to Hell Bar & Grill — and more than willing to tell you about how it is, or was, or even will be….

So, over the background sounds from an old jukebox loaded with worn out 45s (vinyl rather than the likes of a Px4 Storm), settle back and take in their individual stories. We guarantee there’ll be Crimesapleanty indeed…

Enough to keep going until the Editorial bar staff call for glasses and ask the age old question:

“Don’t any of you writers have homes to go to?!”

As with all of these anthologies, we hope you’ll find something that you immediately like, as well as something that takes you out of your late night Cocktail comfort zone — and puts you into a completely new one.

Because, in the Happy Hour spirit of our Murderous Ink Press motto:

You never know what you like until you read it.

It Was In The Year Of….

When you get a good piece of fiction, it’s hard to pass it up, and we always try and see if we can make it fit in somewhere.
The trouble comes when it’s a period piece. Yes, sometimes you can sneak it in, under the guise of it being ‘sort of’ Cosy/Noir/Narrative/Whodidit/Whydidit (etc) orientated. However, sometimes you know you’re left with two choices: Either reject the piece because it doesn’t fit — or see if a new anthology project can stand on its own two feet, take on the world, and win.
And no, not every piece in this is a Cosy — some might be considered as such, but some are Cosy Noir (and yes, such does exist), Historical/Period Drama, Historical Private Eyes, Narrative Crimes, and a whole spectrum of Crime fiction sub-genres in-between.
21 authors — Gary Thomson, Edward St. Boniface, Terry Wijesuriya, Frances Stratford, Dennis E. Delaney, Joan Leotta, Hope Hodgkins, Karen Odden, J. F. Benedetto, S. B. Watson, Hal Dygert, Merrilee Robson, John G. Bluck, David Hagerty, Avi Sirlin, Karl El-Koura, Penny Hurrell, Kai Lovelace, Maddi Davidson, J. Aquino and Kirk Landers — take you from 420 BC through to AD 1969, and give you a criminal history, laid out in a case by case Crimeucopia Crimeline.
As with all of these anthologies, we hope you’ll find something that you immediately like, as well as something that takes you out of your regular era comfort zone — and puts you into a completely new one.
Because, in the spirit of the Murderous Ink Press motto:
You never know what you like until you dust it off and read it.

-=CRIMEUCOPIA —TOTALLY PSYCHO LOGICAL=-

Welcome To The Minkey Haus…

Totally — adverb: completely; absolutely. Used to emphasize a clause or statement. “He/She is totally bat-sh*t crazy!”

Psycho — noun: an unstable and aggressive person. “Don’t you know? My ex is a total psycho!”

adjective: exhibiting unstable and aggressive behaviour. “There’s some kind of psycho nut job on the loose out there!”

Logical — adjective: characterized by or capable of clear, sound reasoning. “His/Her logical mind? Are you nuts or something?”

But are all psychos ‘nut jobs’? Or, given the chance, could they show that their actions really are totally logical? At least, from their perspective that is.

Laurie Stevens, Jesse Aaron, Patrick Ambrose, Stephen D. Rogers, Wendy Harrison, Jan Glaz, Brandon Doughty, Elena Schacherl, Joyce Bingham, Jeff Somers, Glenn Francis Faelnar, Douglas Soesbe, Carol Goodman Kaufman, Daniel C. Bartlett, Richard J. O’Brien, David Bradley, and Kamal Mouhoune will happily take you on journeys that might often put a skewer through any rational thought processes you think you might have.

And as always, with all of these anthologies, we hope you’ll find something that you immediately like, as well as something that takes you out of your regular padded cell comfort zone — and puts you into a completely new one because, in the spirit of the Murderous Ink Press motto:

You never know what you like until you read it.

Up AI Creek Without A Paddle

One of the ‘Joys’ of Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) – is that it gives you direct access into Amazon and their massive online marketing.

The ‘downside’ has been the use of AI to generate (supposedly co-author) a tsunami of ‘fake’ books – to the point where the sheer number of submissions has seemingly broken the KDP processes.

And while the whole Low Content Books (minimal text content - https://kdp.amazon.com/en_US/help/topic/GGE5T76TWKA85DJM ) means you can ‘publish’ AI generated book-style ‘diaries’ by the tens of thousands at zero cost to yourself – and AI-generated ‘colouring books’ also fall into that category. Not forgetting the predictable AI-generated soft-core po*******hy ‘image’ books (AI constructed art consisting of ‘a digital model’ with infeasibly large breasts, ‘covered’ by an equally infeasibly small ‘bikini’.)

It seems that this ‘surge’ has been fuelled by ‘Social Media’ (Tik-Tok, YouTube, Instagram etc) and the proliferation of Get Rich Quick scams. “If you ‘publish’ 1,000 different publications and just one person buys one for $3 – that’s $3,000 in your pocket…” etc, etc, etc.

Only now the ‘cash-in’ also revolves around AI-generated ‘celebrity orientated’ products – fake autobiographies/biographies that skim around the Internet databases, paraphrase (or in some cases don’t even bother to do that) and ‘publish’ the result, in the hope that ‘fan hysteria’ will generate some revenue before enough complaints are lodged and the product gets pulled – only to spring up again supposedly ‘authored’ by someone else.

The knock-on effect to legitimate authors and publishers trying to use KDP has resulted in database choking (title registration timing out), processes becoming broken/failing (Proof ordering failing disastrously), and review processing taking 3 weeks instead of the previous 72 hours.

Our ‘problem’ is that although we dual distribute through Ingrams as well, Amazon remains the only viable International distributor with discounted publisher prices. Ingrams does offer such, but to US-only customers. So we are dependent (at present) on Amazon, and have to swallow the ‘Technical Difficulties’ (Amazon-speak for “You’re stuck with us, so suck it”)

Which is why the Kindle version of Totally Psycho Logical is still stuck in the ‘Publishing’ state – and has been for the last 7 days….

Hopefully something will happen to dump the crap and get back to a ‘relatively usable’ means of production and distribution.

Crimeucopia!
Huh, Y'all!
What is it good for?
Absolutely Reprints!
Say It Again!

Ever Get A Feeling Of Déjà Vu?
There are many things which can be said of the Modern World, and one of those is the amount of ‘noise’ when it comes to finding something - anything - that makes you sit up and say I like that. And sometimes, by the time that happens, the ‘item’ has passed by and gone, washed out of sight by the riptide of The Next New Thing to surf across your attention.
Which is why, whenever we open the doors to new projects and submissions, we also see pieces passed to us with the offer of reprinting them.
Some may only have a paper history, some may only have been up on a webzine site – placed for a short period of time before being archived into the depths of an ISP’s hosting server.
And there are also those pieces which, quite rightly, authors may have a fondness for – the joyful offspring of their creative minds, regardless of how twisted they might be (the offspring that is, rather than the minds of their creators), and which they feel are deserving of a second read.
Hopefully by presenting these pieces here, you’ll start looking at various magazine and webzine archives, in search of something that may have passed you by, or that you missed the first time around.
And, as always with all of these anthologies, we hope you’ll find something that you immediately like, as well as something that takes you out of your regular comfort zone — and puts you into a completely new one because, in the spirit of the Murderous Ink Press motto:
You never know what you like until you read it.

Just An Eight Banger With Big Baloneys
Welcome to Crank It Up!

In July 1886 the newspapers reported on the first public outing of the three-wheeled Benz Patent Motor Car, model no. 1 — a mere 6 months after filing the patent in January of that year.
Since then the race has been on for the Bigger-Faster-Better-More product that has become a variety of symbols over the decades, with the C3 Corvette Stingray repeatedly stated as being purchased almost exclusively as a middle-age crisis mobile.
So, to honour motor transportation in some of its many roles in the crime fiction genre, we have gathered together a fine collection of short pieces that we feel, in one way or another, will crank up your adrenaline and get your emotions racing without making you blow a gasket or strip a gear.
Featuring: Ed Teja, John A. Connor, Ruth Morgan,
Jesse Aaron, Scotch Rutherford, Billie Livingston,
Robert Petyo, John Elliott, M.E. Proctor, William Kitcher, R. M. Linning,
Annie Reed, Wil A. Emerson, Dan A. Cardoza, Alan J. Wahnefried,
Sam Wiebe, Jon Fain, and Mark James McDonough
We hope you’ll find something that you immediately like, as well as something that takes you out of your regular racing line comfort zone — and puts you into a completely new one.
In other words, in the spirit of the Murderous Ink Press motto:
You never know what you like until you read it.

Rule Britannia - Britannia Waves The Rules
Alright My Son, Say No More, Leave It ’art!
This anthology, we hope, contains short stories that, were you to cut them in half with a knife, they would flash you their Union Jacks without a moment’s hesitation.

Daniel Marshall Wood, Gerald Elias, S. E. Bailey,
Alexander Frew, Kelly Lewis, Carew S. Bartley,
Madeleine McDonald, Edward Lodi, Michaele Jordan,
J. Aquino, David Rich, Kelly Zimmer, Sharon Richards,
T. K. Howell, Maroula Blades, David William Johnson

The fiction ranges from general British cosy, through Harry Palmer and George Smiley territory, before going deep into very British Modern Noir. And as with all of these anthologies, we hope you’ll find something that you immediately like, as well as something that takes you out of your comfort zone – and puts you into a completely new one. New Crimeucopians Aran Myracle, Alexei J. Slater, Gerald Elias, Terry Wijesuriya, Issy Jinarmo, Larry Lefkowitz, and Vinnie Hansen smoothly rub literary shoulders with a fine collection of familiar Crimeucopia old hands: Bob Ritchie, Michele Bazan Reed, Nikki Knight, N. M. Cedeño, Wendy Harrison, Andrew Darlington, Madeleine McDonald, Joan Leotta, H. E. Vogl and Jesse Aaron.
All 17 tell tales that will make you realise there’s always going to be One More Thing To Worry About….
And, for those who might be interested, the ‘origin’ of this anthology’s title comes from an old cassette tape recorded off the coast of Florida, back in 1986. The newsreader closed with:
“And one more thing to worry about – Bubonic Plague. It appears that a West Texas hunter contracted the disease from an infected rabbit he shot and ate…” Back then everything was so much simpler…
As with all of these anthologies, we hope you’ll find something that you immediately like, as well as something that takes you out of your comfort zone – and puts you into a completely new one.
In other words, in the spirit of the Murderous Ink Press motto:
You never know what you like until you read it.

This is the first of several ‘Free 4 All’ collections that were supposed to be themeless. However, with the number of submissions that came in, it seems that this could be called an Angels & Devils collection, mixing PI & Police alongside tales from the bad guys. Mind you, that’s not to say that all the P*s & Police are Good Guys – though hopefully this collection is not too NOIR for some.
Followers of the somewhat bent and twisted Crimeucopia path will know that although we don’t deal with flash fiction as a rule, it is a rule that we have sometimes broken. And let’s face it, if you cannot break your own rules now and again, whose rules can you break?
Oh, wait, isn’t that the basis of the crime fiction genre?
Oh dear….
As with all of these anthologies, we hope you’ll find something that you immediately like, as well as something that takes you out of your comfort zone – and puts you into a completely new one.

We don't have any more information as to publication date/guest editor (etc) - but to everyone who has appeared in the Crimeucopia series so far, we would like to say an exceedingly big Thank You for making a little indie press stand out - especially as MIP has never sent Otto a single complimentary edition.

Say What Now?

Planned publication date: Tuesday 15th March 2022

Sometimes editors are forced to reject submissions through no fault of the author. It could be a wonderfully written manuscript, but if the editor cannot place it, then what do they do?
MIP has been lucky in its flexibility and its “Can we start a new project with this?” attitude. That flexibility has led us to go from a proposed quarterly publication timetable, to publishing this, our 10th in the 12 months we have been fully active.
Some of the dozen authors contained within are seasoned professionals, having been published in the likes of Alfred Hitchcock’s, Ellery Queen’s, or other notable publications, while some are making their publishing debuts as Crimeucopians. And while the quality throughout remains exceedingly high, the subject spectrum is the widest we’ve published so far. But that’s only fitting when you consider that the theme of this Crimeucopa is that of No Theme At All.

"They Came From Next Door...."

Small town, big city, watercooler or the back of that 1950s beat-up Chevy Bel Air with the leather back seat that your parents told you never to get familiar with. It doesn’t matter where you hear it, gossip is 100% pure ear addiction – and knowledge is, after all, power when all’s said and done.

So why don’t you settle down, get yourself comfy, and pour yourself a drink – long and tall, or just short and nasty, the choice is yours – and let these 16 story tellers:

Penny Hurrell, Teresa Trent, Wendy Harrison, Maroula Blades, Tom Sheehan, Jan Christensen, Bryn Fortey, Michele Bazan Reed, Carol Willis, Madeleine McDonald, Adam Meyer, Nikki Knight, Regina Clarke, J. W. Wood, Deb Merino and Alison McDonald

spin their tales as only they know how.

And in true Murderous Ink fashion, with that many to choose from you’re bound to find something you like, and something you didn’t know you’d like until you’d read it.
