Like any of Scotland's 134 whisky producers, Islay's Bruichladdich distillery relies on fuel oil, brought in on diesel-powered ferries, to fire the boilers. However, Bruichladdich has set itself the challenge of ensuring that its distillation process will be net zero by 2025, with production of malted barley to follow. Read more in this week’s kwip 🥃

The machines have a myriad of environmental benefits - they help reduce soil disturbance, and enable farmers to reduce or even eradicate the use of herbicides. These agricultural robots can also be designed to perform tasks such as seeding, harvesting and environmental monitoring, and the global market for the robots is predicted to increase from $5.4bn in 2020 to more than $20bn by 2026. Aptly named the 'Delta' robot, it is a unique assembly of household items like pots, pans and an old television monitor. The Delta robot isn't as sophisticated as robots deployed in hospitality or for care in places like Japan, but was created by locals and is comprised of only used materials from their own neighbourhood. It has been a friendly face during the current Covid outbreak in Indonesia, and has been delivering essentials to residents for the past few months. Learn more in this week’s kwip 🤖

Farms that use hydroponics (grow produce without soil, usually in large warehouses) and traditional greenhouses have started to become integral parts of our food supply chain, mainly for leafy greens. Vertical hydroponic farming is often seen as a sustainable alternative to traditional growing. Canadian-based startup Just Vertical is now expanding its offering to home gardeners, and its two new products, the Aeva and the Eve, are marketed as elegant pieces of furniture that can grow between 8 and 10 pounds of food a month. As we all know, single-use plastic waste is a vast problem and while things are improving, some types of plastic (such as PET which is widely used for drinks bottles) are notoriously hard to recycle by traditional means. This is where biological methods might come in handy and the Biohm team is testing their hungry fungus on PET and polyurethane. Read more in this week’s kwip 🤤

Imagine planning your next holiday, but instead of comparing the facilities, you're weighing up the carbon emissions of each option - because the numbers are right there in front of you. was the first international travel company to introduce the concept of carbon labelling at the beginning of 2021. Their label includes carbon emissions from all local transport, accommodation, activities, guides, staff and office operations. Read more in this week’s kwip (link in bio)! ✈️

Tourists visiting the picturesque port at Cassis in the south of France often see an ugly sight: plastic bags, discarded drinks bottles, etc. floating in the water among the boats in the marina. However, the port has now found a solution in the form of Jellyfishbot, a robotic boat that weaves around the harbour and is about the size of a suitcase, making it easier to get into narrow spaces where rubbish tends to accumulate. The creator economy is booming and it's changing the way people make money, whether you're a freelance designer or an influencer. Karat Financial just raised $26 million from investors, including Youtube and Twitch co-founders, and currently offers a credit card for creators which doesn't charge interest or fees, and only turns a marginal profit off of bank interchange fees. A green roof is 'a roof or deck where vegetation or habitat for wildlife is deliberately established.' Along with providing a safe space for rare wildlife, building green roofs in cities can offer a range of other benefits, such as improving local air quality and building resilience against extreme weather events (e.g. urban heat island effect, floods). Since most online outlets are funded by advertisers, stories that garner more ad clicks can also become more visible in Google’s search algorithms. Consequently, news organizations are then more likely to publish similar articles when they see certain stories getting high engagement. The creators' goal isn't to amplify climate coverage, but to call attention to the terrible incentive structures that decide which climate stories get told and amplified by advertisers and search algorithms. Beekeeping is one of the oldest industries in existence, but it faces numerous threats including climate change. As most of us know, bees are crucial to the survival of our own species - of the 100 crop species that feed 90% of the world's population, 70 are pollinated by bees. The good news is bee conservation efforts are in full swing globally, with tech firms innovating to help save the bees.
