Thinking about setting up and running a Google Ads campaign can be daunting. As a digital marketing consultant I have a wealth of experience setting up and running Google Ads for small business clients across the UK. By hiring a professional you can save time, ensure the most successful keywords and phrases and ensure that your Ads continue to work for you to give you a competitive edge for the months and years to come.

There are three factors to consider when assessing how much Google Ads will actually cost your small business if you decide to outsource the Ads.

Agencies will often incorporate the set up fee into a monthly commission structure, generally a percentage of total Ad spend. This model can suit larger companies with many departments. However for sole traders and small businesses an affordable one-off set up fee is preferable. The set up includes researching keywords for the brand’s key products/services as well as looking at their main competitors. The second stage of set up is physically entering all the Ad details into the brand’s Google account. This involves ensuring artwork and images are the right format and size, the keywords and descriptions are optimised and video artwork is created and uploaded. I offer a realistic budget that is affordable and a good investment for small businesses for set up to include 2-3 Ads initially at around £250. The industry average for an agency is anywhere from a few hundred to a few thousand pounds.

Many small businesses don’t have fast changing product collections so it doesn’t make sense for them to pay a chunky monthly management fee. Agencies can charge as much as 10-20% of the total Ad spend. With my clients I will review their Ads quickly on a monthly basis and advise if I think any tweaks or minor changes need to be made. This can be as low as £40 per month, dependent on the intricacies of the business and how many Ads they have running.

The set up and management fees don’t, however, include the actual spend on the Ads. The Ads Budget depends entirely on what you are comfortable spending each month. I’ve worked with clients spending as little as £1 per day who still get effective sales leads and traffic to their website. However I would recommend a spend of around £3-4 per day as a good starting point in most cases. Many clients choose to spend more once we have reviewed the Ads a few weeks after initial set up and they see how well their Google Ads are performing.

The Benefits of Google Advertising

Google is the main internet search platform and, as such, advertising on Google offers a powerful opportunity to grow your business presence online. There are around 8.5 billion searches on Google every day. If your business isn’t showing in Google searches then you are missing out on potential sales/leads.

An effective Google Ads campaign will showcase your products and services to the people looking for exactly what you offer. It can be very cost effective if set up correctly and optimised for your business.

Why it’s worth getting me to set up Ads for you:

Each small business has specific aims it wants to meet – and its own unique set of challenges standing in the way. To set them up yourself will involve learning HOW to physically set them up and also LEARNING the best way to research keywords and phrases to ensure your Ads work for your business.

I have set up many many Ads for a range of clients and have the skill set to ensure that absolutely the RIGHT assets are used (text phrases, images, videos etc) to ensure YOU get the best results possible. And my raison d’etre is to do all of this to help you without breaking the bank.

Affordable Setup: Initial set up can be as little as £175 for two ads. This includes a review after 3 weeks and a typed report for you at 6 weeks.

Ongoing Account Optimisation: For just £40 per month I will review your Ads each month after the initial 6 weeks and make adjustments to existing Ads to improve results. This offers fantastic value for money and ensures your Ads continue to work optimally for you.
Additional Ads: If you want more than 2 Ads (for example, a summer collection Ad or a specific Christmas Ad), additional Ad set up is just £60 per Ad.

Reasons to work with Polly Horton Social

I am a small business specialist and understand the unique challenges you face regarding lack of time (being a Jack of All Trades can be exhausting for my clients!) as well as understanding that every penny counts for you.

Increase Visibility: You want to increase your online visibility but don’t have a big budget.

Tech Ability: You aren’t “techy” and need someone to do the grunt work behind the scenes because you find it confusing!

Time Poor: You don’t have time to carry out the necessary research to ensure your Ads perform at their best for you.

Small Budget: Don’t worry! I’ve worked with all sizes of business and budget. Together we can find a solution that will fit your budget.

Affordable Marketing Consultancy

My goal is to help as many small businesses as I can by offering affordable digital marketing solutions tailored to your business needs in a friendly and approachable way. Contact me on [email protected] to discuss the opportunities waiting for you online!

Not only is this small brand a dream client - but they have taken on board my recommendations and let me have a relatively free rein with their digital marketing!

And I couldn't be more thrilled for them with their results.

It's been a tough year for small businesses trying to grow online sales - but here we are. Online sales up 75% on the same quarter last year (early Sept to early Dec). Number of sales up 66%.

And interestingly more traffic and sales through Facebook and not Instagram.

Don't ignore Facebook people! It can be a powerful resource for small brands!

If you'd like to work with me in 2024, do get in touch by DM or email [email protected] and we can have a chat.

I've loved Fi's products at for many years and was delighted to get a call from Fi back in June to help grow ASSiA online.

Over the summer we have worked on
✅ Tweaking the ASSiA website
✅ Setting up effective Google Ads
✅ Setting up Facebook Shopping
✅ Getting Fi's products lined up on Google Merchant Centre and Pinterest (both free)
✅ Creating a bank of hashtags, and
✅ Coming up with a content calendar for Q4 2023.

All of this will lead to a much increased online presence for ASSiA which in turn will lead to stronger online sales in the run up to Christmas - and cost less than you'd think....

The next 4 months are crucial to the turnover (and survival) of so many product based small businesses. It's been an absolute delight working with Fri - and from Friday 1st September I'll be taking over content creation and posting for ASSiA up to Christmas.

I'm brimming with ideas of how to showcase these wonderful products and can't wait to share them with you.

Do you struggle to think of things to say on Social Media?

Fancy someone working with you to create an effective content calendar so you can spend your time "doing" rather than coming up with a plan?

If so, send me a message - my one-to-one Content Calendar sessions take place on zoom.

⭐ We'll brainstorm the types of content that would suit your brand.

⭐ We'll discuss the message you want to give.

⭐ We'll look at interesting and creative - yet do-able - design ideas.

After the session I will send you a complete three month calendar. (You can choose which 3 months of the year you'd like the calendar for i.e. to tie in with your busiest period).

Because I focus exclusively on small businesses, my rates are surprisingly affordable. Contact me for details.

Cotswold Clearance Company is a new and ongoing project. This month I've designed and launched a website for them on GoDaddy, set up their Google Ads and created a printed flyer.

In July we'll be putting a content calendar together, creating artwork and starting posting on FB, IG and LI.

I love projects like this - the initial analysis of what's required, the problem solving and the implementation. Right up my Straße!

I had a lovely zoom with an Australian yesterday who needed help with Canva.

During the call she explained that she would like to start selling her beautiful handmade paper books and journals (literally, the PAPER is handmade). They are exquisite.

I'm away next week so we're going to regroup w/c 30th May and talk through an action plan for social media, setting up a little website and I've recommended we look at Pinterest.

Do you have a fledgling business idea that you would like help with getting off the ground?

And if the thought of being unleashed in Canva unsupervised horrifies you, get in touch and we can have a screen-sharing Canva tutorial on zoom 🥰

I had the great pleasure (and honour) of meeting up with the team yesterday with a view to increasing their profile and reach. A wonderful charity, James Shone's story is genuinely inspiring and the team he has working with him are full to the brim with commitment and energy in their quest to help children of all ages who feel "deflated". James uses a wonderful "balloon" 🎈 analogy to portray his messages.

I'm really excited about working with this client and am feeling positive with my balloon fully inflated today 🥰

Photos vs Videos....

This will be welcome relief to many small business owners who either aren't confident - or aren't keen - to create videos of themselves, their products, their business life and prefer static image posts.

“I think we were overfocused on video in 2022 and pushed ranking too far, and basically showed too many videos and not enough photos. We’ve since balanced, so things like how often someone likes photos versus videos, and how often someone comments on photos versus videos, are roughly equal, which is a good sign that things are balanced.” Head of Instagram, Adam Mosseri

So if your customers engage more with photos - they will see more photo posts.

But if they love Reels and videos, then they will see more of those.

So now's a great time to analyse your Insights and see which post types get the most ENGAGEMENT for your business - remember, the most engagement.... not necessarily the most views!

I spent such a lovely morning with my client - a truly talented garden designer and great fun too!

We were sorting strategy and schedule for the winter months, catching up on tech and I spent some time showing Sophie how to use to create moodboards for her client proposals.

Sophie is working on some really exciting projects at the moment - ranging from a small London garden in Battersea to a 10 acre project in the countryside! Wow!

12/09/2022

I showed this to members of my small brand community today - we were weeping with laughter.

A lot of our small business members are feeling like this right now - the work life balance is all over the place having had the kids home all summer and now the crazy Christmas season is looming...

I set up OCF small business directory back in the covid summer of 2020! Community, friendship and tutorials to help them sell online when all of their live events were cancelled.

Who knew we'd all still be at it and laughing all the way!

Huge thanks to Catherine at for posting this gem.

Not really.... is the answer I'm afraid! Particularly if you are an e-commerce business.

Industry advice seems to be to start planning your A4 activities in July if you're a small business. If you spend time on the right things over the summer, then they'll be working for you come the autumn and the pre Christmas rush.

Factors to look in to include:
✔️SEO (Search Engine Optimisation)
✔️Google Ads
✔️Marketing timescale to ensure you have a cohesive strategy in place
✔️Analyse data from A4 2021 to identify your KPIs
✔️Content creation for social media - brainstorming ideas or actually creating the content and having it ready on file or scheduled into IG and FB
✔️Competitor analysis from 2021

And it's great to get ahead on:
✔️Festive artwork - flyers to go out with orders, banners for your website
✔️Text for mailshots
✔️Photography
✔️Cashflow forecasting if you have significant more stocks than normal

Has the above sent you in to a panic? Well don't! You'll be fine. If you start making lists over the quieter summer months and do your research you'll be bossing it by September!

Can't see the wood for the (Instagram) trees?

Last week I prepared an Instagram audit for as owner Jax wanted to:
✔️ Tidy up her grid
✔️ Get across her message that her amazing brand supports education in Kenya
✔️ Highlight that Bushbells have opened not one, but TWO, schools in Watamu, Kenya

The audit I prepared offered recommendations for:
⭐Grid layout
⭐Post captions to make them stand out
⭐Hashtags
⭐Stories
⭐Highlights
⭐and Reels

Would you like to fine tune your Instagram and get actionable recommendations that will help you increase reach and, most importantly, engagement?

One of the things I love about working with clients is learning about their products and services. At the moment my client base varies from a Wine & Spirit Merchant to a "Made in England" Merino Wool Sock producer, an Olive Oil and Balsamic Vinegar importer and e-tailer and a Garden Designer.

I'm basd in Worcestershire but my current clients are in Shropshire, Oxford, London, Rutland and Herefordshire - where are you based?

I definitely adhere to the "Two heads are better than one" maxim of life and simply love collaborating with other business owners.

If you have a product or service that you feel needs more of a spotlight shining on it, get in touch and let's see what we can do to maximise your brand's reach and engagement.

Keeping up with algorithm changes is a priority for social media managers. Advice on hashtags has changed over time but the general consensus (at the moment) is that:

#️⃣ While you're allowed to use up to 30 hashtags in a Post, the optimum number currently seems to be 8-12.

#️⃣ Don't use exactly the same combintation of hashtags in every post.

#️⃣ Put your hashtags in the post caption - NOT separately as a comment.
