This week, we speak about mental health.

It's Mental Health Week here in the UK - and the theme is nature. We look at our inner drives, and how the scientific development has been birthed from the Enlightenment, covering the birth of empiricism and rationalism.

From Rene Descartes, David Hume, John Locke, Immanuel Kant and Arthur Schopenhauer, we look at some of the concepts that have given birth to modern day science and philosophy (from Wikpedia, mixed with my uneducated mind).

Finally we look at Ralph Waldo Emerson, who wrote many works that inspired individualism through the US in the 1800s - reading one of his first essays -one that fits the theme of this year's Mental Health Week, "Nature."

This week we start with a chat about mental health...

What is your mental health? We start with a discussion on the definition of mental health - and what is may mean to be mentally well.

We take a look at a discussion on the (6:15) origins of talking therapy, with a discussion on Sigmund Freud and (09:50) Carl Yung's following work on the collective unconscious, (10:44) the Hierarchy of Needs and self-actualization.

Carl Roger's (16:15) would pick up on the concept of self-actualization is his person-centred approach, with an explanation of Roger's (17:45) "fully-functioning person."

Person-centred therapy relies on (22:30) three core conditions - congruence, unconditional positive regard and empathy.

Mental health (25:15) may be about becoming a "fully functioning person" - with explanations by Jordan Peterson and how his work is based upon the works of Rogers and Freud, exploring the rules within his books, (27:00) "12 Rules for Life: An Antidote to Chaos" and (29:15) "Beyond Order: 12 More Rules of Life."

We end on comparing the rules to (30:45) Carl Roger's fully functioning person - and some personal stories on how Jordan Peterson's work has helped me find some meaning in some of the suffering we experience in life - and (35:00) asking how we can work towards being a "self-actualised person."

Today we discussed the fundamentals...

Starting with your physical health and building a life outside of your business/career that keeps you grounded -- (04:00) and building a business with the right foundations, working with the right customers, with a standard process.

There is a lot (8:00) to consider when you are building your business-to-business organisation/service and building a business - outside of yourself - that is scalable, through leveraging technology and building a team.

The (13:00) fundamentals are hard to get right - from the basics in life, to your basics in your business, and how that will serve you long-term, (16:00) asking yourself "what do you want from this?"

We (17:30) end discussing how strategy is more important that ex*****on - and some plans for the Podcast moving forward.

We're back!

Pit Village Podcast took a little break after Marathon March. The podcast starts with a recap of the lessons from March, the plan for upcoming Podcasts and the importance of last week's (04:10) digital detox, including how the smartphone has changed our relationship with time, authentic experience and thoughts and (10:00) are purposefully created to keep us hooked with variable rewards.

We move to to discuss the (13:00) attention economy and the importance of your ability to retain and generate attention, and move on to start to cover the 151997 article "Attention Shoppers" (25:00).

The article is fascinating, showing that attention can ground an economy as it is a (30:25) truly limited resource, discussing how transactions in the attention economy may form.

The (35:35) Star System that was proposed in this article is taking shape today and the prediction that 'everyone would have a crack at a global audience' has come true.

The most interesting point of the article was the discussion of the (42:00) end of money and corporations, with our economy relying on communities of people coming together to service each other based on their merit in the form of attention - including some discussion of how in 1997, CEOs were starting to become stars.

He proposes that this has happened before (48:00) in the transition from feudalism to the industrial economy -- and that it will happen again though the article finishes, leaving us with some wise words of warning and discussing the challenges this economy may face.

The article concludes (54:00) that "for better or worse, the attention economy will prevail", and we look at some of the ways that has already become the reality.

We talk about evolving as a Podcast & within your business (58:00) and end on some questions about your life, within the Attention Economy.

We'll be back this week with another episode!

This weekend's 'digital detox' is over...

What an experience!

Podcasts will resume with a regular schedule this week 🙏

30/03/2021

Today we speak about choices...

We start by asking how much you believe you are (0:20) in control of your daily routine and the external influences on your behaviour.

Cognitive bias... how does it effect us? We explore idea such as the law of small numbers, anchoring, availability heuristic (and the larger threat of an "availability cascade" within public sphere).

We move on to speak on (2:49) alongside other biases such as frequent exposure bias, sunk-cost fallacy, loss aversion and the endowment effect.

Ultimately we make (04:49) choices but are faced with companies fighting for our attention at all costs, which makes 'Deep Work' more invaluable.

'Deep Work' (6:20) is explored in more depth. A book by Cal Newport, who believes Deep Work is the "Superpower of the 21st Century." We look at how employers value deep work and how it is becoming increasingly rare, which makes us more valuable to the work place when we decide (10:40) to learn how to utilise 'Deep Work'.

We end with some (16:00) plans for the Podcast as we move into April and the end of our one-podcast-per-day under "Marathon March."

Struggling to come up with an idea... was the reason for this idea. We explore ideas for four books to bring us back to basics.

We start with questioning what you can do, to find new direction, exploring (2:20) the four disciplines of ex*****on. We explore on areas within the book such as, the concept of the "wildly important goal", measuring your lead behaviours, keeping score and being held accountable.

We move on to the next concept, working towards mastery and the 10,000 hour principle, explored in (7:08) Peak by Anders Ericsson. We focus on how to effectively study and one example from the book, to showcase the power of your mind, as we force ourselves out of our comfort zone and create new mental representations.

This takes us to (11:55) The Compound Effect, with an example a 10% increase on £10.00 per week wage compared to a £5000 per month wage - and how our daily habits lead to extraordinary results, if they are focused on our core values and long-term vision.

The last idea we look at is from book we look at is by Cal Newport, called (16:50) So Good They Can't Ignore You, where we look at how passion is developed over time, and the best bet we have is to create a 'craftsman mindset' and focus on improving ourselves to provide more value to the world.

The episode is about... (21:20) going back to basics.

The original idea was to record an episode on being a loser... let's talk about ways to escape that, instead.

We start with an overview of the original idea (loser mentality) and move quickly on to (3:10) virtues.

Moving on (4:00) with a brief summary of Aristotle's way of summarising virtues, as a middle-ground between excessiveness and deficiency.

We then briefly look at (9:00) the four cardinal values and Christianity's view of the seven deadly sins and seven heavenly virtues.

The point is... (13:00) virtues are skills that we can develop, if we choose.

Today... the age-old discussion. Talent vs hard-work.

We start with discussing both talent and hard work, and what those phrases bring to mind, and how (4:30) those who mix both talent and hard work, reap most of the rewards in society.

We move on to discuss (6:40) talent and (8:40) how we discover our talents, including trying many different things, ignoring others and following your instincts.

We move on to discuss how hard work (11:40) cannot be replaced. Talent is the 'abstract', hard work is the 'concrete'. The day-to-day action it will take to get to where we want to be.

Hard work is hard (13:40) so you need a reason to work and commit yourself every day. Ultimately we cannot be (16:20) a tyrant - but we must move forward with hard work, to discover our talents.

Self-esteem... what is it and how does it impact your life?

We start with discussing the discovery of the 'self' and the value recognising systems used to evaluate ourselves.

We move on to (1:40) exploring the theories of the self-concept, self-esteem, self-awareness, self-knowledge and self-schemas.

Exploring why (4:46) self-esteem is important, what high and low self-esteem look like in the way people present themselves to the world, (8:24) with some classifications for your self-esteem and (10:00) the difference between conditional and unconditional self-esteem.

The end message... (10:50) get to know yourself and don't self-sabotage.

We start by talking about the comfortability of becoming established in business and (3:50) the need for reassess your current position and goals.

It may be time to (6:45) go back to the basics, (9:00) assess your customer base and customer expectations and (12:30) build systems that assist you in scaling the business.

We look at the importance of your (14:00) five year plan, reinvesting in new systems and hiring people to assist in the growth of your company, as the next step for your business and some real world examples with Prospect27.

Gratitude. How can it help you?

We start with gratitude as a force of happiness, with some basics about the feelings of gratitude in your life, and (3:00) how a shift in perspective may be all you need, and the separate types of gratitude (4:20).

First off we have prepositional gratitude, including (5:30) the conditions of gratitude and (7:30) elements of the grateful response and gratitude as a dynamic between people.

Shifting the topic on how gratitude can assist us in our daily lives as 'propositional gratitude', including (9:49) gratitude as an emotion, reactive attitude and a virtue.

We explore more of 'gratitude as a virtue' (11:13) and how (13:30) gratitude is a way of being and tool that when utilised effectively, can improve your life.

Thank you for listening.

When should you quit?

The podcast starts with the idea of 'quitting' vs 'failing' and some thoughts on a recent chapter from Jordan Peterson's new book, including (2:00) failing as a learning process.

We move on to (3:10) fixed vs growth mindsets and the effect on young people in their lives and employment, and (5:50) how learning how and when to quit will separate from others.

"The Dip" (6:50) by Seth Godin provides us with a good insight into what, when and how to quit. He says, in the book, (8:50) everything is controlled by the dip, (9:40) how the dip creates scarcity in business and (11:40) how to get exceptional results by knowing what to quit, and when.

We end with a question (13:30) - what should you quit, and how would that make your life better?

I wanted to speak about building a long-term vision and focus... but ultimately it comes down to one thing. Sacrifice.

We start with delayed gratification and building a vision for yourself that is worth the sacrifice, (3:30) along with the 2nd 3rd and 4th order consequence of your decisions and habits.

Knowing 'why' (5:35) you want to achieve your vision and (6:30) building the skill of achieving goals, with the importance of (8:30) 'why' explored more.

Remember... (9:50) you will get what you desire the most.

We start (0:20) with the 1997 article "Attention Shoppers!", which details the 'attention economy' and how cyberspace has a natural economy of attention.

We discuss (7:00) The Social Dilemma and our personal responsibility, including some details on how your (10:00) data is used in the "fight for your attention" and how the use massive-scale testing to keep your addicted (11:20).

"Our best episode so far", said a friend when he previewed this one!

Fair enough... we're only ten in.

We speak about Entrepreneurship. And moving from owning one business, to becoming an entrepreneur.

We start (0:21) by defining an entrepreneur and why they are a key role in society. (2:04) Recognising that ideas are cheap, we understand that we must go into business to play our role in society as entrepreneurs.

We discuss creating multiple companies and be the "bearers of uncertainty" and we dive into the role of (4:00) of the entrepreneur in society, including some the ways in which entrepreneurs progress society.

We move onto the (5:55) traits of entrepreneurs, including how to build some of those traits with practice. We move on to the (7:34) types of entrepreneurs, (9:08) types of entrepreneurship in society. and how (10:00) entrepreneurs are the 'coordinating agent in a capitalist society.'

The problem is (10:45) how to go from owning one business, to creating multiple. And (11;00) we take some time to recap the role of the entrepreneur and the ways in which they deliver on their duties to progress society.

The aim should be to become (14:00) top 3% of your industry, and how you do that. We discuss transitioning into an entrepreneur with decisive action, and (17:23) how to use your foundation with the first business to launch more entrepreneurial ventures.

We (18:45) end with recapping entrepreneurship and discussing the ways in which we can find balance between maintaining our current business, and repurposing ourselves to open a second one.
