Should every business use paid adverts?
There seems to be a certain pressure to use paid ads once your business gets going. But, it’s not always that simple.
Think of this:
Would you be able to advertise your business in Time Square?
If you run a small to medium business, any ad you could afford amongst the big players in NYC would be minuscule - it would make no impact and would be a waste of money 🗽🍎
Paid social ads are great - there’s a massive captive audience out there who are comfortable with spending money online.
But in order to get the right ads in front of the right people, you need the budget to match the outcome you want to achieve.
The good news is that the platforms like Facebook and Instagram have many different objectives available to target your ideal customer.
You might be looking for sales or brand awareness which are totally different outcomes requiring a different approach AND budget.
If you have a small budget, it might be wise not to go chasing sales as these high intent customers will likely cost you more to acquire. You may be wise to get more eyes on your brand initially, building up to driving sales to warmer audiences later.
Whatever you do, make sure you invest your budget wisely. Don’t throw it away on pointless ads.

📣 Don’t do paid social media advertising…said the paid ads expert!
No, we haven’t gone crazy but honestly there are times when other marketing channels will serve you better.
Paid social media ads can be successful for a really diverse range of businesses but they are not a golden ticket to success if other things aren’t in place.
This is particularly true if you have little experience of ads or haven’t got the budget for the outcomes you are looking to achieve.

Don’t spend any money that you can’t afford to lose (in the initial period). It’s an investment 💵

Are you digital Ads scroll-stopping?
The problem with trends in any area is that it leads to lots of things that look the same.
This is true in advertising. Lots of product ads in particular can look very similar and potential customers just don’t even see them as they scroll. Ad blindness is real!
Social media is a blur, an overload for the senses - just like the background image on this post. It’s hard to read the text because the background gets in the way.
If you want your product to sell you need ads that shine 🌟
Some ideas
▫️Tell your brand story - explain to people what you are about why you are great
◽️Use video to bring the product to life
◽️ Create some aspiration - tap into the fomo and show people using your product and how it makes them feel
◽️Invest in the best quality images/creative assets your budget can stretch to
◻️ Consult an ads expert even if it’s just to audit what you are doing and level up your campaign
◽️Optimise all parts of the advert itself - copy, creative, headline, call to action so it speaks to your ideal customer and they know it’s for them
Social media is full of noise, make sure your ads are as good as your product to get the results you deserve.
What’s your ideal customer journey and how does that inform your marketing strategy?
Let’s be realistic here, it would be great if customers were drawn to our product or service like a magnet but if, like most of us, your offer is not in that category and you have to work to draw in customers then investigate how people are finding you at the moment.
If the majority of customers are coming for you via one method e.g. referrals and you have more customers than you can deal with coming that way then great – well done but you are in the minority.
If you want to grow then be deliberate about it – don’t let it happen to you at random 🌱
Have you looked at the data to see how people find you and the stages they go through before becoming a customer and later a repeat purchaser?
Most people have a feel for this, but we believe in a data driven approach to inform brand growth and promotion activities.
❓Where does your initial purchase come from?
❓Once you have that first one, how do you encourage repeat purchase and ongoing work?
For example if you know that most new buyers currently are referrals from existing customers this gives you a couple of great options to drive growth:
1. Maximise your referral offer to existing customers to generate more high-intent leads for your business. If people truly think you provide a fab product or excellent value they will recommend you willingly and are even more likely to do so with a little reminder or incentive.
2. Knowing that you get a large percentage of your customers from referrals means that you have big untapped potential in other areas of your target audience. Think about what channels you haven’t really pushed yet as they might be gold. Do your homework and work out where you should put your time and budget to maximise results. If you don’t know much about this channel it may be the time to get some help from someone who does. Don’t try to do everything yourself as that’s an easy

Anyone else suffering from information overload? 🤯
We are exposed to so much information digitally these days from a range of sources and it’s tiring. Even when I’m trying to find out about something of interest online, the sheer volume of info out there is astounding.
It’s not all reliable and it’s not all relevant. Wading through it to get to the bits you need requires persistence and right now lots of us don’t have the headspace for it.
We also find this with regards to ads. New customers have often heard things about ads that are either old wives tales or are outdated and plain confusing.
There’s lots of jargon about and sometimes people just don’t know where to start - they don’t feel confident and don’t want to waste their money so they put it off for a while limiting their business.
They hear things about pixels and tracking and funnels and all those other terms that are thrown about and just can’t go there (because they are probably homeschooling and running a business 🙋🏼♀️)
They also think it will be expensive. They may be right on this, it’s not free to advertise but it’s all relative and what’s expensive to one person is a great investment to another.
The good news here is that there are independent ads experts out there like us who can help. It doesn’t have to be a big agency fee.
Perhaps you could upskill yourself initially by booking some training or if you know it’s not your thing outsource it completely.
Please ensure that you work with someone who is properly trained and/or experienced who explains things clearly and doesn’t over promise on results.
