A festive fairground ride has crashed in city centre, injuring several people (12.12.2024).

At least one person was taken to hospital eleven assessed by medics on the scene after the ride "failed and crashed", according to the West Midlands Fire Service.

Officers and paramedics attended the scene at Centenary Square, Birmingham, at 7.30pm on Thursday after the ride dropped to ground level “whilst in operation”, according to the fire service. The 'Star Flyer' ride appears to be the attraction which malfunctioned and collapsed.

The Fair has been cordoned off by West Midlands Police with officers on site, and all fairground rides are currently inoperative.

A private taxi caught fire this morning around 10:30am near the Asda supermarket in Bordesley Green close to Imperial Road, .

Sounds of explosion from the burning taxi were heard and witnesses at the scene say the driver managed to escape unhurt.

Two ambulance crews and a fire engine arrived at the scene following the fire, and the road partially closed off to traffic.

The no.97 bus service has been rerouted to Green Lane, and police have advised motorists to take alternative routes to avoid delays as emergency services attend to the fire.

Local residents are advised to shut their windows as thick plumes of smoke spread around the area.

Preparations are currently underway in Broad Street for the annual Conservative Party conference in .

Broad Street will be closed between Oozells Way and Lyon Queensway while the conference takes place at the ICC.

The partial road closure and traffic restrictions will start on Tuesday 24th September and continue until Friday 4th October.

Bus services will also be impacted and passengers are advised to check with West Midlands Travel for updates and route changes.

Severn Trent has confirmed that a burst main water pipe in the Sparkhill region of resulted in residents being left without water and local schools forced to close on Friday morning.

Residents as far away as Bordesley Green and Small Heath suffered low water pressure, and in some cases no water at all for a couple of hours. People have also complained that water is discoloured in some households.

Road closures are in place in Stratford Road near Knowle Road as West Midlands Fire Service and water engineers work to stop homes and businesses being flooded.

Local streets and pavements are flooded and residents forced to walk through ankle-deep water to their homes.

West Midlands Fire Service are pumping the excess water into the nearby River Cole.

West Midlands Police advised motorists to avoid the affected area, and diversions are currently in place as emergency services continue to work at the scene of the incident as night draws in.

Couches, taxis and bus services are also being diverted.

Residents in Moseley have come together to raise funds to provide emergency clean water for displaced war victims in , .

The fundraisers are working with popular local business Cafephilia Moseley and West Midlands Palestine Solidarity Campaign (WMPSC) to generate thousands of pounds which is being used to supply several tankers of clean water to refugees in Deir al-Balah and Khan Younis in the coming months.
