More to celebrate. ‘Do you mind…can I ask (what happened to your legs)? will be screened at the Cromarty Film Festival in 2023.

The film is part of a curated programme of works celebrating the legacy of the late moving image artist Simon Fildes.

If you know Simon’s work, then you know he was a pioneer of screen dance in Scotland and abroad, and the dance film editor of his generation.

The programme recently screened in Detroit at Screen Dance International and in the highlands Dance North Scotland. Be sure to add this event to your calendar for the Cromarty Film Festival at the Cromarty & Resolis Film Society next spring.

Just out FrameForm.io podcast celebrating the legacy of the late international award-winning filmmaker Simon Fildes. Episode here: https://www.rixey.co/frameform/episode/1cbe1557/remembering-simon-fildes.

‘I think hands down he was the best editor of dance in his generation. I can’t really think of anyone that comes close’ B. Estabrook

‘No one touched that editing software like Simon.’ O. Carter

‘He challenged what could be perceived as dance film.’ L. Gourlay

‘Simon was the guru of bringing people together within the field.’ A. Clifford

‘Part of Simon’s legacy to the field is his willingness to constantly be in conversation about forwarding this field, about forwarding this art form, about sharing what he knows and what he thinks about in terms of the creative process with everyone. I’m sure that’s part of his legacy because I know I’m not the only one.’ R. Gee

‘It feels like they’ll definitely be a hole now in the screendance world that no one can really fill, but he brought enough people into the circle for us to inhabit it and take care of it.’ O. Carter

Proud to announce that Simon is Screen Dance International's 2022 Distinguished Artist:

2022 DISTINGUISHED ARTIST FEATURE

This year SDI celebrates posthumously the life and work of Simon Fildes. Simon was best known as a dance film editor. His work used improvisational performative approaches to explore ideas; drawing inspiration from and defined by the rhythms of movement; tracing and manipulating hidden (incidental) and created (intentional) choreography.

Perhaps the most important lesson Simon left us was about being human. In 2021, he was diagnosed with cancer and passed away from the disease, after having lived with MS for over 10 years. Being a disabled artist, Simon excelled as an underrepresented population in the screen sector. His unwavering strength teaches us to continue dancing on the inside no matter what life throws our way.

In this grouping, Simon’s work can be experienced through several career-defining roles, as a producer, mentor, concept/writer, director, editor or performer. This specially curated programme has been designed to leave you with a glimpse of the sublime, a sense of the impossible body, and strength in the face of adversity.

In the midst of this weekend's festivities, there was a moment of quieter reflection, and celebration of another kind, as we screened Dancing on the Inside: honouring the legacy of Simon Fildes.

The dance film showcase was introduced by Susan Christie and Dance North Creative Director, Karl Jay-Lewin.

It was only the second time Simon's final film 'Do you mind can I ask what happened (to your legs) has been screened live, and there was a sense of warm remembrance in the Universal Hall as it was played alongside six other beautiful films that were worked on on influenced by Simon, one of the true visionaries of Scottish screen dance.
