Quick thinking Yorkshire policeman borrowed bicycle to arrest suspect car thief
Footage shows a fast-thinking cop commandeering a bicycle to arrest a man who fled from a Range Rover after a high-speed chase.
The incredible body-worn video revealed how a passerby offered the policeman their road bike so he could peddle off in pursuit of the 25-year-old suspected car thief.
The officer had previously followed two men travelling in the stolen Range Rover to a housing estate, in Rotherham, South Yorks., on Wednesday (April 10).
But when the driver crashed the £40,000 car, a cyclist pointed the cop in the direction of the passenger before giving him their bicycle and telling him, 'Go get em'.
The policeman later ditched the bike and followed the suspect on foot after they jumped over a wall and headed into a back garden.
He finally collared the man after drawing his taser and ordering him to 'get on the floor' before slipping a pair of cuffs on him.
Roads Policing Inspector Matt Collings, from South Yorkshire Police, later commended the officer for his quick-thinking actions.
He said: “This job is a great example of the dedication and commitment of officers to catch those responsible for crimes and how sometimes, a simple routine traffic stop can lead to greater finds.
“Those involved in criminality are more likely to take further risks on our roads and pose a danger to innocent members of the public, our role as roads policing officers is to intercept their criminality and reduce that risk.
“A huge thank you to the member of the public who leant our officer their bike, knowing we have the support of our communities is a great feeling.”
The clip showed how the chase bizarrely began with the driver reversing for about half a mile in the pricey white Range Rover Evoque at 7:15pm.
And the officer could be heard telling his commanders “This is a strange pursuit” as he followed him along Dalton Lane, to the North-East of the town’s centre.
The driver eventually turned the car around and then drove at speeds of 80mph in a 30mph zone while a
