O Shadow of Ours يا ضُلَّنا is a film that documents emotional stories told by two women who fled the war in Sudan. The title is inspired by Yahyaa Fadlalla's poem, which conveys the notion of never losing hope, no matter how long or how much it takes.

Starfished:

Starfished tells the story of a woman who has had a damaging rumour spread about her throughout her place of work, we follow her attempts to trace it to source and confront the person responsible, and this rumour is strangely connected to a Starfish, somehow. It deals with workplace politics and internal fighting. It is a comedic take on the subject, greatly inspired by television shows such as The thick of it, Veep or Succession.

Hello,

I am looking for people to join me as part of my crew in the production of the short film ‘Starfished’.

I am looking for people who feel experienced enough in sound and lighting to be responsible for those areas of the production. The equipment will be borrowed from the University tech team.
The sound mixer will be responsible for picking up ambient sounds and dialogue. While lighting will be responsible in creating the correct tone that I am searching for- well lit.

You must be free on these dates.

Saturday 11th March: 11:00-13:00, 19:00-22:30.
Sunday 12th March: 11:00-13:00, 20:00-23:00
Monday 13th March: 12:00-15:00

As BFI 2022 is just around the corner, we're re-posting some of the most memorable reviews from BFI 2021, just to give you a taste of what this incredible annual festival has to offer!

The French Dispatch:

The film opens with an introduction to the variety of medium it employs; rustic animation, print culture and the classic two-dimensional, quasi-theatrical cinematography that distinguishes Wes Anderson from other directors. This heterogenous and varied terrain lays the perfect background on which to frame the fragmented narratives. Individual and seemingly unrelated stories from the Newspaper, ‘French Dispatch’ rub shoulders in a confused and discordant mosaic. However, each story echoes a universal irony, an appreciation for beauty and taste alongside a pathos for the end of an era in France marked by the death of a young and optimistic revolutionary, and the death of the director of the paper himself.
The film cleverly manipulates the periodical. Taking the flat, daguerreotype articles that one can imagine giving only a cursory glance over an idle tea and transforming them into a format that demands the consumer’s attention- cinema. The narratives may be incongruous, like the very articles wedged together within the pages of the periodical -economy, art and cuisine- but that incongruity is perhaps the films’ purpose. A closed and tidy narrative is unnecessary, what Wes Anderson seeks to achieve is something more fundamental, to capture momentary and tragic snapshots of the human experience in a rapidly disintegrating hierarchy.

By Lizzie Blackledge

King Richard:

The difficulty it seems with biographical films is the immense pressure to remain close to the truth yet distant enough that the narrative does not fail to honour sufficiently somebody’s reality. Raw and sensitive but not mawkish; relatable but not generic. King Richard manages to balance such complexities with grace and style. Portraying the story of Venus and Serena Williams’ rise to fame at the hands of their determined and insistent father, the film celebrates the love of a father towards his daughters and his unwavering desire to see them achieve but remain happy and fulfilled whilst doing so. It is a more sympathetic depiction of a character often publicly depicted as an ‘overbearing bully’ (Ide). Although the film doesn’t avoid the controversial aspects of his personality, it never fails to connect these whole heartedly with the love he has for his family and his desire to protect and nurture his children to the best of his ability.

Mothering Sunday:

Mothering Sunday is a lyrical spectacle transporting viewers back to the year of 1924 through costume, dialogue and nostalgia. The plot follows protagonist Jane Fairchild (Odessa Young) and her romantic relationship with Paul Niven (Josh O’Connor). The film combines flashback techniques with a nonlinear plot structure to create a layered narrative like that of a memoir.

Young is depicted in youthful naivety and her curiosity and inquisitiveness carries endearingly through the screen. The depth of Jane’s character and her unspoken emotions are conveyed effortlessly to viewers and character relationships seem to unfold before us as the film progresses.

The lighting and colouring of Mothering Sunday becomes a character of its own with rainbows and refracted light dancing delicately through frames. The soft, warm wash lighting of the scenes in summer add a sense of poetic magic to the film creating a beautiful spectacle.

The film’s use of rich colours combined with understated acting and an engaging plot create a film that is both poetic and moving.

EUniverCities student ambassador

The EUniverCities network will be holding a meeting in Exeter on 7-9 June 2022. Student representatives of our network partners (15 cities across Europe) will be attending this meeting and will be engaging in student-focused workshops and activities. One of the aims is for students to collaborate on a short film (on a defined topic related to arts and culture) as part of the programme.
We are looking for students to represent Exeter during this meeting. The student ambassadors will attend some of the meeting sessions, participate in discussions with students from European universities, and help support the students’ filmmaking activities. We are especially keen to work with students who have:
- A demonstrable interest in arts and culture
- The ability to work in a group with students of different nationalities
- Some experience in filming and editing video material
You must also be available for the duration of the meeting activities (to take place on 8 and 9 June; you would also be invited to a welcome dinner on 7 June). There will be one or two online meetings before the event (to take place late May). There may also be an opportunity to work on editing the film after the event.
This role is offered as a research volunteer post. We will be offering a payment of £100 plus expenses for attending the event itself, with a further £100 offered for assistance with editing after the event.
To apply, please send a brief expression of interest by email to Katherine Shingler, EUniverCities Network Coordinator: [email protected]
