Spelthorne Borough Council has put in place a Public Spaces Protection Order (PSPO) banning the use of New Psychoactive Substances (NPS), formerly known as legal highs.

A public consultation was held in February with 97% of residents backing the PSPO and believe the use of nitrous oxide is a problem in the Borough.

The Order applies to all public land within the Borough and prevents the use of any psychoactive substance. Any person who fails to comply with this order will be issued a Fixed Penalty Notice of £100 or risk a fine in court of £1,000.

Consuming Nitrous Oxide has many dangerous side effects and risks including:
• dizziness, which might make you act carelessly or dangerously
• nerve damage
• if you have too much you can end up fainting, having an accident or worse
• risk of stroke or falling unconscious
• suffocating from the lack of oxygen

Alison Griffiths, Conservative county councillor for Sunbury and Ashford Common, says she wants the community to "rally together" after the attack.

She shared concerns over a growing number of incidents in the area. Cllr Griffiths said: "Antisocial behaviour at Sunbury Cross has been rising at an alarming rate recently.

"I am in regular meetings with the centre manager, Spelthorne Borough Council and local police as we try to deal with the rise in incidents. I feel we are on a precipice and we need to rally together as a community to fight back and keep our community safe."
