Many things were whirring through my mind when I read the article by Ben Weeks in the March 2024 issue of Trail – a thrilling/chilling blow-by-blow account of a Matterhorn ascent last summer, a dream he’s been chasing for much of the past decade.
If you’ve ever wondered what it takes to climb an icon of the Alps – physically, technically, financially, mentally – Ben covers all of that off and plenty more. My main emotion while reading was probably one of fear – in the sense I know I’m way too much of a chicken to take on a challenge like that. But I also found it inspiring. Ben’s a good climber, both on rock and in winter conditions, and that’s because he’s turned himself into one. He had a dream and he chased it until he grabbed it – 4478m into the Swiss sky.
And it’s made me think about all the mountains I’ve always wanted to climb but still haven’t ticked off. Suilven and Liathach in the NW Highlands are near the top of the list; as is Steeple, one of the few Lakeland summits I still haven’t muddied with my boots. I’m sure every Trail reader has big goals to chase in the the mountains, and I hope Ben’s Matterhorn trip is a reminder to everyone that you can turn those dreams into reality.

Room with a View!
Discovered some great walkers' accommodation this week on the shores of Coniston Lake at Ground Bank Farm in the Lake District this week. Magnificent view of the Old Man!
They've got a range of affordable accommodation of all sizes, plus a little campground - and in summer, water sports, a cafe and restaurant.
