On the 3rd of Rajab we remember our Master, Hadrat Owais Qarni Alaihir Rahmah who is commonly known as “Khayrut Taaba’in.” His full name is Abu Amar Owais Bin Harb Bin al Muradi bin al Qarn [d.37H/657]. Hadrat Owais Qarni Alaihir Rahmah was born in a village called “Qarn” in Yemen where he lived all his life.

Ibn Asaakir Alaihir Rahmah reports from Hadrat Sa’eed ibn Musaayib Radi Allahu Anhu who reports from Hadrat Sayyiduna ‘Umar Radi Allahu Anhu who narrates that, “Once the Holy Prophet Sall Allahu Alayhi Wa Sallam mentioned to me, ‘Among my Ummah, there is a person named Owais. There is a sign in his body that he once suffered from vitiligo but through his Du’as, this has been healed and very little remains. If you meet him then convey my Salaams to him and request him to make Du’a for you. With Allah Almighty he certainly possesses a very high status. If he swears in the Name of Almighty, Allah Almighty will certainly fulfil his oath. He will intercede for my Ummah. Through his intercession, people equal to the number of the Bani Rabee’h and the Bani Mudar tribes will be pardoned.”

Due to the fact that Hadrat Owais Qarni Alaihir Rahmah continued to serve his mother, he never managed to personally meet the Holy Prophet Sall Allahu Alayhi Wa Sallam although he lived in the time of the Holy Prophet Sall Allahu Alayhi Wa Sallam.

Hadrat Owais Qarni Alaihir Rahmah had asked his mother’s permission to visit Allah’s Most Beloved Messenger Sall Allahu Alayhi Wa Sallam, and she said: “You have my permission to go, see him once, and come straight back. If the Messenger Sall Allahu Alayhi Wa Sal-lam is at home, you may meet with him; if not, come straight back here.”

Hadrat Owais Qarni Alaihir Rahmah journeyed three months on foot, from Yemen to Madi-nah Shareef. On arrival at the Holy Prophet’s Sall Allahu Alayhi Wa Sallam house, he knocked on the door. Sayyidah ‘Aisha Radi Allahu Anha, wife of the Beloved Messen-ger and Mother of the Believers opened the door. She told him that the Holy Prophet Sall Allahu Alayhi Wa Sallam was at the Masjid.

Hadrat Owais Qarni Alaihir Rahmah remembered his promise to his mother and replied: “Please convey my Salaams to Rasoolullah Sall Allahu Alayhi Wa Sallam. Kindly inform Rasoolullah Sall Allahu Alayhi Wa Sallam that Owais came from the Yemen, did not find him at home, and Owais is returning to the Yemen, since he does not have permission from his mother to meet him in the Mosque.”

When the Holy Prophet Sall Allahu Alayhi Wa Sallam came home from the Mosque, he found the radiance of Owais in his house. Sayyidah ‘Aisha Radi Allahu Anha told him what had happened, and conveyed Owais’s salutations. His blessed eyes looked towards Yemen and the Beloved Prophet Sall Allahu Alayhi Wa Sallam said: “The fragrance of our friend is reaching us.” The noble Companions asked: “If Owais is your friend, why did he not stay to see you?” Rasoolullah Sall Allahu Alayhi Wa Sallam replied: “He complied with a promise given to his mother and he is serving her.”

The Holy Prophet Sall Allahu Alayhi Wa Sallam said, “Owais will come back to Madinah, to meet me, but we will not meet physically, for I shall then be united with my Lord.”

The Holy Prophet Sall Allahu Alayhi Wa Sallam said that when Owais came back to Madi-nah he was to be given the Holy Prophet’s Sall Allahu Alayhi Wa Sallam cloak, and asked to pray for the Community (Ummah) of Muhammad Sall Allahu Alayhi Wa Sallam. He also mentioned that a light was visible on one of Owais’s hands.

The ‘Ulama explain that one of the reasons that he did not come to Madina Shareef was because he was serving his mother who was very frail and weak. Some ‘Ulama also explain that another reason that he did not come to Madina Shareef is that perhaps he did not want his feet to touch the blessed footprints of the Holy Prophet Sall Allahu Alayhi Wa Sallam. He was such a true Aashiq of the Holy Prophet Sall Allahu Alayhi Wa Sallam that he did not want any action of his to appear as if he was disrespecting the Holy Prophet Sall Allahu Alayhi Wa Sallam.

There are some reports which mention that someone once asked Hadrat Owais Qarni Alaihir Rahmah how he had lived in the time of the Holy Prophet Sall Allahu Alayhi Wa Sallam but was unable to see him. Hadrat Owais Qarni Alaihir Rahmah asked this person whether he had seen the Holy Prophet Sall Allahu Alayhi Wa Sallam and this person replied that indeed he had. Hadrat Owais Qarni Alaihir Rahmah then asked the person to mention the number of white hairs which was on the Holy Prophet Sall Allahu Alayhi Wa Sallam. This person could not answer the question. Hadrat Owais Qarni Alaihir Rahmah then mentioned that the Holy Prophet Sall Allahu Alayhi Wa Sallam had fourteen white hair on his blessed head. He had five white hair on his blessed beard and one on his lower lip. Allah Almighty knows best.

When Hadrat Owais Qarni Alaihir Rahmah received the message that the Beloved Prophet Sall Allahu Alayhi Wa Sallam, had lost a blessed tooth in the battle of “Uhud”, Hadrat Owais Qarni Alaihir Rahmah pulled one of his own tooth out (because of his extreme love towards the Beloved Prophet Sall Allahu Alayhi Wa Sallam). Then, thinking that he might not have pulled out the right tooth, he pulled out another tooth, then another, until all of his teeth were lost; in order to ensure that it was similar to the blessed tooth of Prophet Muhammad Sall Allahu Alayhi Wa Sallam which he had lost in battle.

Hadrat Owais Qarni Alaihir Rahmah passed away about 2 years after the demise of Say-yiduna ‘Umar Radi Allahu Anhu. Hadrat Owais Qarni Alaihir Rahmah was about 35 years old.

The Best Prayer is the Prayer of Arafah

The Prophet ﷺ said: “The best prayer is the prayer of the Day of Arafah. The best thing which I and the Prophets before me have said is:

لاَ إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ وَحْدَهُ لاَ شَرِيكَ لَهُ، لَهُ الْمُلْكُ وَ لَهُ الْحَمْدُ يُحْيُي و يُمِيت وَ هُوَ حَيٌّ لا يَموتُ بِيَدِهِ الخَيْرُ و هَو عَلَى كُلِّ شَيءٍ قَدِير

La ilaha ill’Allahu wahdahu la sharika lahu, lahu’l-mulku wa lahu’l-hamdu yuhi wa yumit wa huwa hayyun la yamut bi yadihi’-khayr wa `ala kulli shayin qadir

“There is no deity save Allah alone. He has no partners. To Him belongs the dominion and all praise. He brings life and brings death and He is the Living Who never dies. To Him belongs all good. He has power over all things.”

The Prophet ﷺ called it a prayer (dua) but where is the request? What is the person actually asking for when he says it?

The reality is all requests are contained in it if you are connected to its meaning and realise its implications.

If you say it with realisation, your Lord gazes upon you and all requests made to Him by anyone in the past and the future are insignificant compared to what He then gives you.

The believers should repeat it on the Day of Arafah whether they are performing hajj or not.

Saying it removes darkness from you until you become pure light. It removes the darkness of witnessing created things by affirming to Whom truly belongs the dominion and the power to give life and death.

Can you then have hope in other than Him, fear other than Him or rely on other than Him? No!

May Allah enable us to realise these realities.

May He bless us on the Day of Arafat such that the forces of disbelief, misguidance, corruption and deviance are stopped in their tracks. May the banners of Muhammad be unfurled in every place so that the promised time soon comes in which la ilaha ill’Allah enters every single house.
