"The patterns of lesions that impair specific tasks showed a very clear separation between those regions of the frontal lobes necessary for controlling behavior, and those necessary for how we give value to choices and how we make decisions," said neuroscientist Daniel Tranel, of the University of Iowa.

Caltech researcher Ralph Adolphs explained that several different parts of the brain might be activated during a particular type of decision-making. And the maps show which parts of the frontal lobe are the most critical areas that, if damaged, could result in lifelong impairment.

Damage to the brain's frontal lobe is known to impair one's ability to think and make choices. And now scientists say they've pinpointed the different parts of this brain region that preside over reasoning, self-control and decision-making. Researchers say the data could help doctors determine what specific cognitive obstacles their patients might face after a brain injury.

For the study, neuroscientists at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) examined 30 years worth of data from the University of Iowa's brain lesion patient registry and mapped brain activity in almost 350 people with lesions in their frontal lobes. They linked these maps with data on how each patient performed in certain cognitive tasks.

One of AI's best-known achievements occurred when IBM's chess-playing Deep Blue computer beat reigning world champion Garry Kasparov. But unlike chess, poker is a game of incomplete information; players do not have knowledge about the payoffs and strategies of the other players. "Poker is much more relevant for the real world than chess," Sandholm told Live Science.

One of the most important strategies in poker is the art of bluffing, in which a player makes or raises a bet without having the best hand, in order to fool an opponent into folding. "People often think about bluffing as being a psychological phenomenon," Sandholm said. But beyond psychology, "bluffing still emerges as a strategic phenomenon," he said.

Libratus was also more likely than the humans to underbet in certain surprising situations, Sandholm said. And every night, it went home and adapted its strategy based on the hands it had played.

"The adaptation was not to learn to exploit the opponent, but rather to determine what holes the opponent had found in the AI strategy and automatically patch those holes," Sandholm said.

Still, there's some hope for the mere mortals. In Heads-Up Texas Hold'em, two players compete. But Libratus would have no idea how to beat players in a poker game with five or six players. There, Nash equilibrium solutions don't work, Sandholm said.

"I would say the top humans in something like that would probably do better than the best AI," Sandholm said.

However, Go was a much harder nut to crack. The strategy game, which originated in China around 2,500 years ago, relies on deceptively simple rules. Players place white and black stones on a large gridded board in order to encircle most territory. Stones of one color that can touch other friendly stones are said to be alive, while those whose escape routes are cut off are dead.

But behind the simple rules lies a game of incredible complexity. The best players spend a lifetime to master the game, learning to recognize sequences of moves such as "the ladder," devising strategies for avoiding never-ending battles for territory called "ko wars," and developing an uncanny ability to look at the Go board and know in an instant which pieces are alive, dead or in limbo.

Man versus machine

Ever since IBM's Deep Blue defeated Gary Kasparov in their iconic chess match in 1997, AI researchers have been quietly crafting robots that can master more and more human pastimes. In 2014, IBM's Watson defeated the Jeopardy! champion Ken Jennings, and last year, a computer named Claudico — that can "bluff" through Heads-Up No-Limit Texas Hold 'em — gave human poker players a run for their money at a Pittsburgh casino.
