During his evening shows on Radio Caroline in the 60s Johnnie Walker engaged listeners with a segment called ‘Kiss in the Car’, a popular feature where listeners would call in and describe romantic moments shared in their cars. The ‘Kiss in the Car’ licence was issued as a cheeky way of giving them ‘permission’ to get romantic while parked up.
It ran alongside the ‘Frinton Flashers’ segment where listeners drove to Frinton-on-Sea in Essex and parked along the coast with their radios on, waiting for Johnnie to give when the order to flash their lights at the Mi Amigo, three miles offshore. Johnnie said he knew he had conquered the UK airwaves when, late one night, he commanded “Lights on!” and the entire coastline, as far as he could see lit up
